TIME Magazine has released its annual list of the 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017, and two proud Filipinos made the cut.
The two teenage Filipinos are 19-year-old Hawaii-based beauty vlogger Bretman Rock and 14-year-old student activist Shibby de Guzman.
The two Pinoys are the only two Southeast Asians on the list, joining the ranks of famous Hollywood personalities like Shawn Mendes, Elle Fanning, Willow and Jaden Smith, Brooklyn Beckham, Auli’i Cravalho, Noah Cyrus, and more.
The thirty teenagers listed were chosen because of their “accolades across numerous fields, global impact through social media, and overall ability to drive news.”
Bretman Rock is a social media star, known for his hilarious yet fabulous make-up tutorials and Instagram updates.
“There is nobody on the Internet more fabulous than Rock,” TIME Magazine wrote.
“The Hawaii-based Filipino beauty vlogger shot to fame for demonstrating makeup skills—fierce contouring, flawless eyebrows—that could give the Kardashians a run for their money.”
“But the real reason Rock (born Bretman Rock Sacayanan) has racked up nearly 9 million Instagram followers is his larger-than-life personality, best seen in the musings he posts alongside his glam how-tos,” the article continued.
Meanwhile, young activist Shibby de Guzman received widespread recognition when she joined last year’s protests against President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to allow the burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Hero’s Cemetery.
“She carried a megaphone and wore a cardboard sign similar to those sometimes strewn over the bodies of drug-war victims,” TIME described Shibby.
“Then, in a widely shared social-media post, she shut down critics who alleged that her fellow protesters were “brainwashed”.
