The much anticipated World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) ASEAN has now got AirAsia on board as its official airline partner.
The international esports championship tournament by Alisports - the sports branch of Alibaba Group - will see ten countries in the region run and compete in the WESG 2018-2019 season through online tournaments that will lead to regional finals, and finally, the grand finals in March 2019.
AirAsia's title sponsorship deal with Agri Mind Sdn Bhd - the sole organiser of the event as appointed by Alisports China - for WESG Asean will include flights, media value, cash prizes and more.
In return, the airline's branding will be seen across various WESG Asean digital platforms and tournaments, plus AirAsia will be able to offer various ancillary products and services at the events, including its online store and ticketing agent.
“In terms of esports enthusiasts, Asean is one of the fastest growing regions in the world with 9.3 million fans, a number expected to grow 36.1% every year through to 2019. As an innovative digital company, we are thrilled to be the title sponsor and to contribute to esports by supporting Asean’s top professional esports athletes to compete at the global tournament.” said Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, CEO of AirAsiaX and Executive Chairman of AirAsia Group Berhad as quoted by Esports Insider.
No stranger to the esports industry, back in January AirAsia was announced as the special sponsor and exclusive airline partner of Mineski Pro Team.
Two months later, the airline had acquired a majority stake in Team Saiyan, a top-ranked professional esports team that have since been rebranded as AirAsia Saiyan.
The online registration for WESG Asean in each country had commenced on 1 June and will be open until 31 July 2018. Participants may register at sea.wesg.com/registration.
