“Light” to take the stage at klpac before heading to Australia

“Light”, a theatre production that revolves around “the theft of Penang, birth of Adelaide, and the rise of the British Empire”, is set to take the stage at klpac for a week starting from Friday, 23 August.

Here’s the week-long schedule for “Light”:

Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Thomas Henning, “Light” revolves around the tale of Francis Light claiming the island of Penang property of the British in 1786. Fifty years later, his son, William, laid out the city of Adelaide. However, amidst all this, it is not known what fate befell William's mother Martina Rozells.

Henning said, during a recent press conference with Malaysian media, that he was intrigued by what happened – or could’ve happened – to Rozells, as there are many speculations about the common-law wife of Francis Light; hence his decision to collaborate with TerryandTheCuz on producing the play.

The cast is made up of Filipino actress Junji Delfino, seen last year in “Crazy Rich Asians”; Malaysian director-actor Gavin Yap, whose most recent big screen work is “Revenge of the Pontianak”; and Malaysian theatre director-actor Arief Hamizan.

After its run in Malaysia, “Light” is heading down under to OzAsia Festival, Australia’s leading arts festival that is entirely dedicated to engagement with Asia, which is set to take place this year from 17 October to 3 November.

“Light” marks the first Malaysian project to be commissioned by OzAsia Festival. According to the festival’s Artistic Director, Joseph Mitchell, they were attracted to the project as they previously selected TerryandTheCuz’s critically acclaimed production of “SK!N” for their festival and saw that the company’s new work has the same potential.

Aside from “Light”, TerryandTheCuz’s Govin Ruben and Terence Conrad revealed that they are also working on other works, “We are currently working on our Off-Broadway season of “SPLIT” a new work in theatre, a contemporary Malaysian adaptation of Hamlet; a graphic novel/augmented reality project titled ‘UnderKL’, the European tour of ‘SK!N’ and are currently in discussions to write, produce and direct a new feature film which explores the themes of modern day romance through the prism of love, race and gender.”
