Cinephiles in Malaysia who are looking for a unique movie-going experience will soon have the chance to catch a movie at the first ever Moonlight Drive-in Cinema.
The joint effort by TGV Cinemas and AEON will feature a dinosaur theme, specifically the famous dinos from the “Jurassic World” franchise.
“We are delighted to partner with AEON Co. in bringing the Moonlight Drive-In Cinema cinema experience to life; TGV’s commitment to consistently raising the bar in out of home entertainment experiences remains our focus and this is yet another milestone for us on this journey,” said Cora Lee, TGV Cinemas' Brand & Communications Assistant Manager, when asked by Cinema Online regarding the film exhibitor’s decision to launch a drive-in cinema.
“We hope our guests are as excited as we are for this first-ever drive-in cinema roadshow and have a fun and safe experience,” she added.
This particular drive-in cinema operates on a travelling roadshow concept. Cora shared that it would travel “across Peninsular Malaysia at 3 different AEON Malls over 3 weekends, screening a total of 18 shows, welcoming thousands of Malaysians to this unique entertainment experience.”

Two movies, “Jurassic World” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”, will be screened in a dinosaur-themed environment. Aside from the screening, there are also prizes to be won during the pre-show and the dedicated 15-minute intermissions at every screening.
Below are the locations and dates where the Moonlight Drive-in Cinema will be held.

AEON Mall Bukit Indah | 21 - 23 August |
AEON Mall Cheras Selatan | 28 – 30 August |
Ticket pricing has yet to be revealed. At the moment, interested movie-lovers can register at TGV Cinemas’ website to be the first in line to purchase the tickets once available. They’ll have to hurry though, since slots are limited.
Food and beverage packages to suit various group sizes per car will be made available for purchase at the drive-in cinema.
As is the norm at drive-in cinemas, car windows must be rolled down to prevent carbon monoxide build-up in the car. To ensure customers’ comfort, a battery-operated fan will be included with every ticket purchase, which can be used by guests to keep their car suitably ventilated.
When asked what would happen if it were to rain during the screening, Cora responded, “Should any sessions be cancelled due to rain, we offer guests a choice of a full refund or TGV Movie Packs to a greater value than their initial purchase which can be redeemed at any TGV location until year end.”
Furthermore, as a way to ensure customers’ safety and to prevent untoward behaviours in public, there will be a dedicated team of on-ground staff and security guards ensuring that a social and cohesive environment is maintained.

While the upcoming uniquely themed drive-in cinema is the first to feature a roadshow concept, it isn’t the first drive-in cinema to be launched in Malaysia. That honour goes to the Casuarina Sini-Drive that was launched in Ipoh on 17 July.
The Perak drive-in has, however, momentarily halted its activities and is expected to resume operations soon.
A quick check on the ticket pricing shows that the cheapest entry coupon for it is priced at RM36, which comes with a combo set of two beverages and food. The entry coupons also come in two other prices, RM40 and RM42, both also with combo sets.
Apart from the two abovementioned drive-in cinemas, there are a few more that will be popping up in Malaysia sometime this year. Among these are Drive In Cinema Malaysia, M-Junction, and a drive-in cinema by Deromp Marketing.
