Joe and Anthony Russo had to admit that James Cameron is king when it comes to the box office numbers, after the filmmaker's 2009 sci-fi film, "Avatar" surpassed their 2019 movie, "Avengers: Endgame" to be the current all-time highest grossing film worldwide.
On 14 March, the Russo Brothers posted a piece of art to celebrate Cameron's success, which showed the word Avengers: Endgame transforming into the word Avatar, and tweeted, "Passing the gauntlet back to you [James Cameron]."
Marvel Studios also extended their congratulations to the filmmaker, posting, "Congratulations to [James Cameron], [Jon Landau], and ALL of Na'vi Nation for reclaiming the box office crown! We love you 3000."
It is noted that "Avengers: Endgame" previously bested the record held by "Avatar" for ten years with USD 2.797 billion. However, with Cameron's movie re-releasing in China this weekend, it had since earned an all-time total of USD 2.8 billion.
Nonetheless, many believed that the title will be passed back and forth between the two movies with every re-release.
