Before Joe Exotic became the Netflix's "Tiger King", he was first featured in documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux's "America’s Most Dangerous Pets" more than ten years ago.
And now Theroux is set to return to Oklahoma to explore what had happened since his last meeting with Joe, real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, that led the latter to now residing in a federal prison for murder-for-hire plot and multiple animal cruelty charges.
The documentary, which is temporarily titled, "Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic", will also feature unseen footages from the previous interview, as well as (hopefully) an interview with Exotic himself and those closest to him.
"This is one of those quintessentially American stories, taking place in the heartland of Oklahoma, with a cast of characters almost too colourful and larger-than-life to be believed," said Theroux. "I spent eight or nine days filming at the park back in 2011, over the course of three separate visits. I’d forgotten how much we shot until I went back into the footage during lockdown. It’s extraordinary how much was there."
