Malaysia’s badminton hero Datuk Lee Chong Wei will soon be honoured in Johor as the state government has decided to build a sports complex under his name.
Named as the “Lee Chong Wei International Sports City”, the sports complex will be built at Bandar Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang, on an 11.18 acre site.
No time frame has been provided on the completion of the sports complex, but according to the Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, it is expected to cost at least RM100 million.
The complex will comprise of a badminton stadium, hostel, badminton academy, medical facilities and venues for other sporting activities.
“The complex will turn Johor into an international training academy for badminton just like the famous Frederikshavan Badminton Academy in Denmark, Yeomju Gymnasium in South Korea, Dongguan LYB Badminton School in China and Taufik Hidayat Arena in Indonesia,” he said during the tabling of the 2017 Johor Budget.
Apart from the Lee Chong Wei International Sports City complex, Johor also plans on building a Sports City Stadium in Mount Austin, Johor Bahru, Bernama reports.
