Former Manchester United player Ashley Westwood has been appointed as the new head coach of the Penang Super League team for the 2017 Malaysia Super League (MSL) season.

Replacing Croatian Nenad Bacina, the 40-year-old rose to prominence as coach after successfully leading the Bengaluru FC at I-League, India's top-tier football league, and becoming the first ever club to have won the title in its debut season.

Penang team manager Zairil Khir Johari told Bernama that the Football Association of Penang (FAP) hopes that Westwood would help lift the performance of the players and the standing of the team, and lead them to glory.

“Westwood is a well-respected coach because under his guidance, Bengaluru FC had won several titles, including the I-League, Federation Cup and made it to the AFC Cup quarterfinals for two consecutive years,” he said as quoted.

The English coach was a graduate of the Manchester United Academy, and has signed a two-year contract with Penang despite being on the “wanted” list of several top clubs in China, Hong Kong and Europe.
