The creator of the famous Chinese comic strips “Old Master Q”, also known as “Lao Fu Zi” (老夫子), Alfonso Wong (王家禧) has passed away at the age of 93 on Sunday, 1 January in the United States at 5.57am.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by OMQ Comics, the company that promotes and markets the comics, the famous Hong Kong manhua artist died of organ failure inside his home in California.
Wong once said, “My life is like a comic strip, I will make Old Master Q captivate my audience as much as I can.”
Wong’s iconic comic strips first came to newspapers and magazines in Hong Kong in 1962, and is one of the longest running and popular comic strips across Asia.
The popular comic series follows the hilarious everyday life of titular character Old Master Q, an elderly, slim man dressed in yellow traditional Chinese attire, along with several of his lovable and iconic friends like Big Potato, Mr. Chin, Mr. Chiu and Miss Chan.
The comic series has also spawned numerous Cantonese and Mandarin animations and live action series and movies.
