Korean singer Roy Kim serenades fans with Mandarin and English songs

“The sky is dark, it’s going to rain…” Korean singer-songwriter Roy Kim softly crooned to his crowd of fans during his recent showcase at Paradigm Mall, Malaysia.

The fans’ faces were undoubtedly the opposite of cloudy as he opened his showcase with his Mandarin remake of Stephanie Sun’s “Cloudy Day”, their excitement apparent as they were living a dream come true, being able to see and hear the talented singer live in person.

The South Korean singer recently visited the country for his first ever showcase, organised by Warner Music Malaysia, also marking his first time to venture into Southeast Asia for an event.

The winner of Mnet's Superstar K4 not only got to show off his musical prowess to his Malaysian fans, but also his language skills as he sang songs in Mandarin, Korean and English. He even conversed with his fans in all three languages, much to the delight of the multiracial crowd, especially during the interview segment of the show.

The showcase on 26 August may have been held in Malaysia but there were fans from Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam mixed into the excited crowd. Language was no barrier to these fans, the moment their superstar started singing, they were one in their fanchants.

A guitar was brought onstage for his second song. Strumming the upbeat sound of “Love Love Love”,  his face brightened up with a smile as the fanchants turned louder and fans even started singing along to the song.

He segued into “Pinocchio”, a soundtrack he contributed to the popular Korean drama of the same name, before taking a short break for a little Q&A with the host of the evening, MY FM DJ, Peace.

“I should come here more,” said the singer when asked of his first impression of Malaysia, admitting that he loved the local food, having had four meals of it two days in a row, and even named “sambal kangkung and rice” as his favourite.

The bashful singer paused with a surprised look on his face as one little movement he did onstage –taking off his jacket – elicited screams from his fans, prompting the host to joke, “I can be your coat hanger, you can take off your shirt too.”

When told that some view him as the Asian version of Damien Rice, and fans describe him as “handsome, cute and smart”, the 23-year-old shook his head and said, “I’m just an ordinary person who likes to sing.” However, he added that he does feel happy with the compliments.

“I feel loved. I wasn’t expecting this big of a crowd when I was first invited to Malaysia,” said the singer as he thanked everyone for coming.

If there’s one thing fans can relate to with the singer, it’s Pokemon Go. Even Roy Kim has jumped on the latest craze and excitedly stated, “I’ve caught at least 20 or 30 in Malaysia!”

Talking about his music, the singer admitted that his mother’s love for folk music was his biggest influence in becoming a folk pop singer and no, he did not have an obsession with repeating his song titles. Referring to one of his songs, he explained with a grin, “I used the title “Bom Bom Bom” (Bom means Spring in Korean) because I did not want to simply call it Spring. It was surprisingly well-received in Korea so I tried it again with “Love Love Love” but that didn’t work, so I decided not to do it again.”

After the interview, Roy picked up his guitar again for his next song, “Home”. He then wrapped up his performance with the aforementioned “Love Love Love”.

Wanting more, the crowd shouted out “We want Roy Kim” to bring the singer back onstage for an encore, a request which he willingly obliged to.

“What song do you want me to play?”

With a smile, the singer decided to go with an English song, Damien Rice’s “The Blower’s Daughter”.

Saying that this would be his last show before he returns to the US for his studies, he admitted that he is happy he made it in Malaysia.

“Thanks again. My first impression of Malaysia is only greatness. I’ll be back!” the singer promised before parting with his fans.

A Meet & Greet and an autograph session were held earlier prior to the showcase, while after, some of the lucky fans had the chance to receive special photocards onstage from the singer himself.

Social media app Instagram is a treasure trove of awe-inspiring photos. Some can inspire you to work out for a sexy bod, inspire you to travel, make you laugh again and again, and some will make you feel like playing with your food (in a good way).

Take Malaysian housewife-turned-food artist Samantha Lee’s account for instance, who “makes food that tell a story”. Here are some of her pop culture themed foods that will make you want to whip up your own home-cooked meal the next time you hear your stomach saying “Hello~”:

Pokeball pasta

Gotta eat ‘em all!

Chewbacca toast

You don’t need the force to gobble down this Chewbacca toast.

“Finding Nemo” fish dish

Did you “find” your Nemo dish?

Pikachu omelette

Pika-pika-pick a ‘chu for your breakfast!

Wonder Woman bread and apple

A Wonder Woman a day, keeps the doctor away.

Snow White meal

Because just an apple (tomato?) a day might not keep the villains at bay.

“Peanuts” lunch

Clean your plate and you’ll get an actual ice cream.

“Monsters, Inc.” dinner

To scare away the hungry monster in your tummy.

Adele’s “Hello” rice and omelette

Hello~ Can you hear my rumbling stomach?

Minion corns

Sorry guys, only corns here, no bananaaaaa…

8 ways Asians consume the liquid gold: honey

$

Over on the other side of the world, our US friends have declared the whole month of September as the Honey Month. It is the month to celebrate not just the sticky, sweet substance but also everything revolving around it. The bees that forage nectars from plants, the beekeepers who collect the honey they produce, the brains behind the abundance of honey products in the world.  It’s medicine, aphrodisiac and sweet treat all in one.

This golden syrup, made of mainly fructose and glucose, doesn’t spoil thanks to the lack of microorganisms that are able to grow in it. However, fermentation can occur when exposed to moist air, though this isn’t a bad thing fi the intention is to produce alcoholic beverage mead.

While pancakes dripped with honey is usually eaten as breakfast in the Western hemisphere, we, over at this Eastern side of the world, have our own ways to consume this liquid gold. Here are some Asian food made of or containing honey:

Honey strings

Also called King’s Dessert as it was a highly-prized dessert for Korean royalties,
this started out as a traditional Chinese sweet known as Dragon’s Beard Candy.

though this right here is by far the best way.

During the recent press conference of “Young & Fabulous”, the 19-year-old singer admitted that even before she joined the film, she has always been a fan of anime thanks to her brother’s influence.

Joyce Chu at the “Young and Fabulous” press conference.

“I like anime a lot. It was due to my brother’s influence because he likes watching a lot of anime like Naruto, Pokemon, Digimon, and others. Even though those anime are more catered towards boys, I ended up watching them as well,” said the singer who is well known for her song “Malaysia Chabor”.

Starring in the cosplay-themed film directed by Michael Woo and Joyce Lee, Joyce Chu said that it is like fulfilling one of her many childhood dreams.

“I never tried cosplay before because I never got the courage to do so, but I’ve always admired it. So when I received and read the script, I was super excited and couldn’t wait to try out all the outfits!” exclaimed the singer.

“Anime is something that I’ve loved since I was young, and I’m so happy that I can finally cosplay and be one of the anime characters – it’s like living one of my childhood dreams!” she added.

Coined by the Japanese, cosplay is a popular Japanese culture where participants known as cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific popular character usually from an anime or manga.

Dennis Lau on his priceless Phoenix Violin and upcoming concert

Internationally renowned electric violinist, composer and producer Dennis Lau is set to hit his next milestone with his first ever large-scale concert, “Dennis Lau & Friends”, The Phoenix Rising”, featuring Malaysian all-star powerhouses and talents that have collaborated with him over the years.

The concert will soon be Malaysia’s next most talked about event, as Dennis will be unveiling his new masterpiece, The Phoenix Violin, a custom-made 23k gold-plated violin which is the only one of its kind in the world, and is touted as the most expensive electric violin in the world.

The Phoenix Violin was personally handcrafted by Irish guitar maker, Alistair Hay, who previously built Steve Vai’s Emerald Ultra Guitar and Wang Lee Hom’s Dragon Guitar, AKA the Bahamut.

Dennis’ astounding violin was also Alistair’s first ever violin project which was customised to fit just one specific body, which is of Dennis' himself.

“We are not building an instrument, but more lie a suit and masterpiece where it has to fit perfectly,” said Alistair.

Set to take place on 22 October at the Mega Star Arena, Dennis promises that the dynamic concert will be a mix of music and art that will take musicality and showmanship to a whole new level.

See what else to expect from “Dennis Lau & Friends”, The Phoenix Rising” concert, as Dennis and Alistair tell us more about the concert, the violin and everything in between.

This will be your first ever large scale concert. How do you feel?
Dennis: Life is about challenging yourself. You create waves one after another to make sure that you progress and to give entertainment value to audiences and to anyone who doesn’t know you – that is my goal! Of course, it is also to show the diversity of the violin, and myself as a violinist, producer and composer. I’ve been dreaming of doing this concert for so long. It is actually inspired by “David Foster & Friends” concert. Every time I see David Foster performing with Michael Bolton, Kenny G, and Earth, Wind and Fire, I think to myself, “One day, I want to perform with all these artistes that I have collaborated with before.” Throughout the years, I have built the relationship with all these artistes, and I think this year is the right time to do it.

Some of the talents who will be performing at the concert. (L-R) Koujee, Vince Chong, Soo Wincci, Syafinaz Selamat, Russel Curtis, Sarina Sundara Rajah and her student.

What is the message and value that you want the audience to derive from this concert?
Dennis: Ultimately, it is to tell people that instrumental music deserves a platform to be showcased and to be recognised. If you see international award shows like the Grammys, there are categories for Best Instrumental Music, Best Composition and Best Film Score, which are all instrumental music, but in Malaysia, we don’t have all of these. It’s not that I’m trying to make a statement that we should have these categories at award shows, but I feel that it should be recognised for its quality of work.

What can we expect from the concert and how will your performance with the Phoenix Violin differ from the other violins that you’ve used?
Dennis:The Phoenix Violin has to sound like a normal violin. What can you expect from the concert? It’s definitely not going to be like any K-pop concert that you’ve seen. The musicality and the ingredients, for example, if you cook fried rice, mine would have foie gras, that’s how it would be different.

Alistair: From a distance, I’ve been looking on what’s been developing with concert and the music, and there’s a word that we used at work which we called the synergy. And the meaning of synergy is two or more components acting together to give something greater. That’s why I think that synergy is a word that could define this concert, because it’s a collaboration of great people who work together, and together they create something even better.

You started off as a pianist, but what makes you want to focus on just playing violin?
Dennis: The answer is very simple, I can carry my violin around but not piano. That’s not the only reason, I also feel that the violin is the closest instrument to a human’s voice – it can play pop, rock, R&B, jazz, classical and others. I want to show the audience that a violin can be played in all these genres as well, and not just classical music because a lot of people would find the instrument very boring. That’s why the artistes that I choose to work with have to believe in my music and the capabilities that a violin can do. That is the message that I’m trying to deliver.

So Alistair, this is your first violin, can you tell us about it like what is it made from?
Alistair:All of my instruments are made from carbon fibre. I don’t work with wood at all, so the materials are very light and very strong. I made a lot of guitars in the past that have been very weird and sculptural, like the Dragon Guitar that I made for Wang Leehom. It gives me the opportunity to build something that is different and unique.

What were you doing before making guitars?
Alistair:I was building Formula 1 racing boats. So that’s where I learnt on how to work with carbon fibre and that eventually led to making guitars.

How did the transition from race boats to guitars happen?
Alistair: My passion was always to build things, and my other passion is guitars. I have always loved guitars and I can play a little bit. So eventually the two things kind of joined together. There’s this one time, where I tried to make a guitar for myself, but it didn’t turn out very good. So I tried making another one, it was little better than the first one. And after the third guitar I’d decided that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

Dennis Lau and Alistair Hay.

Who came up with the phoenix design of the violin?
Alistair: I’d say it’s a joint effort. We talked about different designs over the years, we mentioned all kind of animals like snake, dragon and bull – we have many different concepts back then. It was only in April that we finalised it to be phoenix.

How long did it take for you to make the violin?
Alistair:It started properly in June after we finalised on the designs and concept. So everything was condensed into a pretty busy two months.

Is everything custom-made?
Alistair: Everything is handcrafted. I do have a team back in Ireland but for this kind of custom projects, I did almost everything myself. The only process that I didn’t do is covering the violin in gold, because the whole violin is covered in real gold. At first, I was planning to do it by myself, but I don’t really want to mess with all the gold and get it wrong.  So I got a specialist to cover in in gold.

Can you reveal what's the price of the violin?
Dennis:It’s priceless, because this is a product that I would not sell in a million years.

Alistair:Let’s just say that it’s probably the most expensive electric violin that’s ever been made.

Dennis:I can say that it is the most expensive electric violin in the world because acoustic violins, they can go up to millions, so I can vouch that this is probably the most expensive, and it’s one of its kind.

You mentioned that at first you didn’t want to make the Phoenix Violin at all because you're not specialised in that area. What made you finally decide to take up the challenge, and what were the difficulties that you faced while making it?
Alistair:Firstly, why I took up the challenge was because Dennis kept following up with me. I get asked to build some of the most unusual crazy things that you could ever imagine, and a lot of times it’s just fantasy. Dennis came to me 6 years ago, and I don’t think that it was the right time for either of us back then. Every year, I would get an email or a Skype call from Dennis, and overtime, we build up a friendship. He was determined to build this violin, and I could see from a distance that his career was developing well. So it was the right time for both of us to do it. I’ve taken many challenges in my instrument building career, and I’ve done just about every style of guitar you can ever imagine, but to build a violin is a whole different thing. I was reluctant to do it at first because it was an area that I’m not familiar with, and the violin is something that has so much history. Guitar is almost a modern instrument by comparison, and the violin has been around for 400 years and virtually not changed at all. But this is an electric violin, so that gives it a little bit of freedom.

Like the Dragon Guitar that I created for Leehom, I like to make them look as though they are unplayable yet, when the person plays them, it will feel like any other instrument that they’ve ever played with. That was sort of the idea with the violin. So it’s functional art, it’s an artistic piece that will stimulate the crowd visually, but when you play it, it sounds and plays like any other violin.

Now that you’ve made your first violin, does that mean that you will continue making them in the future?
Alistair:I don’t’ know, whenever I start building it, I keep telling myself that I’m going to stick with guitars but now that I’ve seen it finished, I realised that there’s something special about violins, and it’s probably something that I might consider.

Back to Dennis, you’ve been in the music industry for 13 years, so in your eyes, how has the industry changed over the years?
Dennis:One of the main factors that have changed in the music industry is that now, it is so easy to get your voice heard with social media like Facebook, YouTube and more. So I think a lot of the artistes nowadays, they want their music to be heard. So, social media is like a tool to make sure that your message gets across and that you can add entertainment value for the right people.

Have you ever thought about scoring for movies?
Dennis:Yes I thought about it before, but it’s a longer process than what I thought I can do. So it depends on my time, effort, and the product that I want to collaborate and believe in. So, I can do that but it also has to have a win-win situation so I can give it a greater value than what it already is.

What kind of movies do you think that you can score?
Dennis: Probably just like Hans Zimmer stuff.

What’s next for you? Who will you collaborate with next?
Dennis:I think every artiste will always strive to collaborate with an idol. Of course, I dream of collaborating with Usher, John Mayer, and Ryan Wesley, and I think that this is a goal and dream that we should not take our eyes off, because it may happen anytime. For me, I just want to collaborate with people that I can see eye-to-eye with via their dreams and vice versa.

Best skyscrapers to visit in Asia

Most of the tallest skyscrapers in the world are located right here in Asia, with the tallest of them being in Dubai. The current record holder, Burj Khalifa, succeeded Taipei 101 in 2010, the latter took over the tallest building in the world record from Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers in 2004. More skyscrapers have since topped the latter two but Burj Khalifa, being a ‘megatall’-certified building, is only expected to be surpassed in 2020 by the Jeddah Tower, currently being built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Planning to visit these superstructures that stand at dizzying heights? Here are some of the must-visit skyscrapers in Asia:

Burj Khalifa (United Arab Emirates)

Standing at 2,715 feet high, this megatall skyscraper, located in the new development called Downtown Dubai in the populous city of Dubai, is currently the tallest building in the world. It is designed by Adrian Smith, who was then part of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the firm responsible of designing One World Trade Center and the Willis Tower. Named after Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi, features of the tower include The Dubai Fountain, a 900 feet long fountain with 6,600 lights and 50 coloured projectors; At The Top, an observation deck located on the 124th floor; a 304-room Armani Hotel and more. It is also a popular spot for BASE jumpers.

Pop culture mentions: Hollywood disaster movie “Independence Day: Resurgence” (2016), the impressive leaping stunt in “Fast and Furious 7” (2015), Tom Cruise-starrer “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” (2011)

Taipei 101 (Taiwan)

Formerly known as Taipei World Financial Center, the tower stands 101 floors above ground with 5 more floors located at the basement levels. The 1,671 feet postmodern structure is located in Xinyi District, Taipei. Since Taiwan is often hit by earthquakes, it is built to withstand the typhoon winds and earthquake tremors. The double-paned and glazed blue-green glass curtain walls can withstand up to 95 millimeters of seismic lateral displacements. The tower is also certified as the tallest green building in the world, since 20 to 30 percent of its water needs can be met by the roof and façade’s recycled water system. Each evening from 6 to 10pm, the tower’s lights display either the colour red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet or purple, depending on the day (starting with red on Monday).

Pop culture mention: Scarlett Johansson-starrer “Lucy” (2014)

Tokyo Sky Tree (Japan)

Currently the tallest tower in the world (‘tower’ here defined as a tall man-made structure that is taller than it is wide and used for regular operational access by humans but not for occupancy or office work), tis steel tower is also the second tallest structure in the world after Burj Khalifa. Antenna spire included, it stands at 2080 feet. Located in Sumida, Tokyo, it is used for both television and radio broadcasting. During the night, LED lights illuminates two alternating patterns, Iki or chic, stylish sky blue and Miyabi, which means elegance and refinement, purple. The patterns alternate daily. Like the previous entry, this tower is also designed to withstand earthquakes. Other features of the towers include a restaurant and an observation deck with a spiral, glass-covered skywalk.

Pop culture mention: It has yet to appear in feature films but it often crops up in photographs due to it being a popular photo-taking spot.

Shanghai Tower (China)

This megatall building located in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai, is the second tallest building in the world, with a height of 2,073 feet. Though opened to the public in 2015, its observation deck was only opened in July this year. This deck, however, bested the height of even Burj Khalifa’s observation deck, located at 561 meters as opposed to the latter’s 555.70  meters. Being the newest on this list, not much has taken place at the tower. 2014 did prove to be an eventful year for the then under construction building, as it was a popular spot for urban exploration. In February that year, two Russian urban explorers climbed on top and released footage taken from the top. Two months later, a Malaysian photographer did a similar feat, except his was for photography.

Pop culture mention: Too relatively new to appear in any pop culture fodder yet.

Petronas Twin Towers (Malaysia)

They may no longer be the tallest buildings in the world (a record they held from 1998 to 2004) but they are still the tallest twin towers at 1,483 feet. Located at Malaysia’s national capital’s Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), the postmodern style architecture was a design by Argentine architect Cesar Pelli. One distinction the towers still hold over other looming structures is the fact that they hold the record for the world’s deepest foundation. Attractions at the towers include the Skybridge, which connects the 41st and 42nd floors, making this the highest 2-story bridge in the world; KLCC Park, where at night lights shows are held at the fountain; and Suria KLCC, where shoppers can splurge on high end brands.

Pop culture mentions: Hollywood movie “Independence Day: Resurgence” (2016), Hong-Kong Chinese movie “Viral Factor” (2012), Bollywood movie “Don: The Chase Begins Again” (2006), animated series “Totally Spies” and “Phineas and Ferb”
