James Bond star Daniel Craig is set to attend the launch of Cambodia’s first Safe Ground, an event that will be streamed on the UNDP-Cambodia Facebook page.

The news was announced by the United Nations Development Programme on social media, which read, "Daniel Craig is coming to UNDP Cambodia to launch Cambodia’s first #SafeGround on January 22."

The actor, who is the UN Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards, will also be speaking with Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA) first vice president Ly Thuch to share why he cares so deeply about this issue, as well as further efforts that can be made to end the ongoing issue which still claims thousands of civilian lives yearly.

Said Thuch, he is happy to have Craig helping to raise awareness of the impact of mines in Cambodia.

The Safe Ground campaign will be launched in a small village in the Battambang province at Stoeng Toch Krom primary school, which is located on a former minefield.

Last year, the country cleared more than 2,000 square kilometres of areas previously filled with mines and destroyed 1,095,750 anti-personnel mines, 25,488 anti-tank mines, 2,885,294 UXOs and cluster munitions.

17 people were dead while 48 others were injured in incidents involving landmines and UXOs last year.
