Rayani Air license is now revoked for good

The Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) has announced in a statement that they have officially revoked Rayani Air’s license on Monday, 13 June 2016.

The country’s first Sharia-Compliant airline had been suspended for three months after failing to adhere to aviation regulations.

MAVCOM cited that the airline had breached the conditions of its Air Services Licence (ASL) and lacks the financial and management capacity to continue operating.

“As a consequence, Rayani Air can no longer operate as a commercial airline with effect from today,” read a statement provided by MAVCOM.

MAVCOM demanded for Rayani Air to provide a representation in writing to defend the airline to continue operations, but since the representations made by Rayani Air are not satisfactory responses, MAVCOM had decided to revoke the ASL.

Nevertheless, Rayani Air also released a statement on its Facebook page, saying that the airline will appeal to authorities for a “second chance for new investor to revive and manage the airline.”

“The revocations came at the peak of our negotiations with investors for the acquisition of equity in Rayani Air in realization that the present owners and their management are no longer fit to revive the airline,” said Ravi Alegandrran Owner and CEO of Rayani Air Sdn Bhd.

“The qualified and strong management team of the new investors would revive and manage the airline much better than us,” he added.

Rayani Air is still liable to refund its customers.

“Customers who have purchased tickets with Rayani Air but were not able go on their journey may lodge a complaint with the company and seek a refund. In the event consumers are not able to obtain their refunds, consumers can file a civil suit for those refunds,” read the statement on MAVCOM.

Chinese nationals are getting help picking better English names

$

Having an English name or nickname, even if you’re Asian is pretty common and it certainly helps people remember you better, but whether it is in a good or bad way – that’s another question!

We all have that one or two friends with some really weird, silly or even inappropriate English names, which sometimes make us wonder how they even came up with the name in the first place.

This phenomenon most often occurs among non-English-speaking Chinese people who have all sort of funny and ‘colourful’ names which then cause other English-speaking people to make fun of them!

For example, we’ve heard of people naming themselves as Cherry, Apple, Kingdom, Yinnie, Hamster, Dicky and more.

So, to solve this (hilarious) problem, American entrepreneur Lindsay Jernigan has created a website to help the Chinese people (especially in mainland China), to choose more appropriate and better-sounding names to avoid embarrassment.

According to The Telegraph, the 25-year-old businesswoman says that she has previously come across names like Lady Gaga, Twinkle, Pussy, Furry and Washing Liquid, while working in Shanghai.

“Your name is your first impression, it is what people are going to remember you by, it is your personal brand. So if you have one that makes people uncomfortable or is just completely confusing then it is going to be a barrier in all future conversations, introductions or relationships,” she said.

For about USD20 plus, the site which Jernigan set up will help Chinese people select appropriate names via a quiz which will supplies the user with five automatically generated names.

Clients can also have a one-on-one consultation session with Jernigan herself for only USD30 plus.

The website was launched last year and has helped more than 40,000 people choose their names.

So, if you’re looking for a nice English name too, be sure to visit the website at bestenglishname.com.

Two weeks after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend, DJ Calvin Harris, pop star Taylor Swift seems to have already moved on to “Avengers” star Tom Hiddleston, as the two are reportedly enjoying a secret romance!

The Sun UK caught the pair having a romantic date and kissing each other passionately on a beach in Rhode Island yesterday.

“They were all over each other – hugging and kissing – even though there were 20 people coming and going on the beach,” said an onlooker.

“They looked like any young couple madly in love without a care in the world.”

Swift and Hiddleston first formed a connection back in May at the Met Gala event where the two danced together to Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” – and now they might be crazy in love with each other too!

Even though it was announced that Swift broke up with Calvin Harris on 1 June, the two had actually ended their relationship a week prior.

“The timing of this looks very bad for Taylor. There was an obvious connection with Tom at the Met Gala – you can see that in the video of them dancing together,” said a source.

Well if anyone needs any confirmation then we can say that Swift and Hiddleston are definitely dating now, just check out the photos of the romantic moment the two of them shared together on Rhode Island beach for yourself!

Runaway ostrich on federal highway sparks memes!

So many weird things happened yesterday, from the shock of discovering Taylor Swift kissing Tom Hiddleston, to a runaway ostrich on the KL Federal Highway in Malaysia!

If you haven't heard (which would be pretty impossible), yesterday evening videos of an ostrich named Chickaboo had been being going viral on social media platforms, especially Facebook.

Many were shocked at the sight of the bird sprinting on the highway, which seems like a scene out from a movie, where the odd situation had caused quite a stir among the drivers and motorcyclists on the highway.

Turns out, Chickaboo was actually being transported by Darren Chow – the owner of the ostrich – back to its farm, but while in the car the ostrich escaped by jumping out of the car window.

“We normally leave the window open for her during transport and it's (usually) fine, but (Chickaboo) decided to jump out,” said Chow as to Channel News Asia.

While Chickaboo is now safe and sound in its farm in Semenyih, the internet have started to get really creative with plenty of memes, jokes and branding inspired by the ostrich!

Thank god!

Many brands are taking advantage of this viral situation and are using it to promote their products, while some internet users created memes and jokes about the giant bird!

10 weirdly-named traditional Malaysian kuih-muih

$
0
0

Since it is almost mid-Ramadhan, we are compelled to write a Raya-related article to get you all excited about the festival!

So this time, we would like to introduce you guys some traditional kuih-muih found in Malaysia!

Kuih (pronounced as kway) are bite-sized snacks or desserts which can be found not only in Malaysia, but also in Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.

Also, the term kuih is a fairly broad term which is used to describe everything from cakes, to cookies, pudding and more.

In Malaysia, there are plenty of weirdly-named traditional snacks which make us wonder how they actually came to be.

Though not all of them have sensible explanations of their names, some are just randomly given based on their looks. But despite their weird names, some of these kuih-muih are really delicious!

Also, they are known as traditional kuih for a reason – they are named by old folks!

Anyway, here are our top 10 picks of the weirdest names of traditional Malaysian kuih!

1.Kuih Tahi Itik
Translated as: Duck droppings snack

Don’t get the wrong idea! The snack is one hundred percent not made out of duck dung!  Instead, it is made out of egg whites and sugar syrup. The name just came by due to its appearance and the powdery white colour makes the kuih look like duck droppings.

Also, the snack is usually made together with kuih jala emas (golden net snack) because one of them uses only the egg whites while the other uses the egg yolk, which is another reason why kuih tahi itik is equated with dung because it is made from the leftovers of another kuih.

2.Kuih Batang Buruk
Translated as: Ugly stick snack

You might think that the name doesn’t sound that weird, but “batang” can be an innuendo to a certain male anatomy in Malay, which is why it automatically gets on board our list! The delicious kuih is made out of wheat flour, rice flour, grated coconut, sugar and ground nuts or green nuts.

The snack is also named based on its appearance as it looks like badly-shaped tree trunks covered with dust – which is actually just nut powder – making it look like old and ugly.

3.Kuih Ulat Bulu
Translated as: Caterpillar snack

This one is pretty obvious as the snack looks like fat and short caterpillars! Made from sticky rice flour, grated coconut, palm sugar, salt, sugar, and green nuts, the kuih is a famous traditional snack from Kelantan.

It is usually green in colour and covered in grated coconut, thus forms the very appropriate name.

4.Kuih Telinga Keling
Translated as: Indian’s ear snack

Now this is just rude. Just because the colour of the snack is dark and shaped like a ear, it is named that. However recently, this name is no longer widely used as to avoid racial dispute, so the name kuih denderam is used more formally instead.

Made from wheat flour, rice flour and sugar, the kuih is actually shaped like a smaller donut too.

5.Kuih Lompat Tikam
Translated as: Jump and stab snack

This kuih is very violent as it will jump and stab you as you eat it – just kidding! This snack is one of the mysterious cases where you have no idea how the name came to be. Well, hopefully the process of making it doesn’t involve any stabbing!

The snack originates from Kelantan and is made out of rice flour and coconut milk. It has two layers where one layer is usually green, while the other is in white, and the snack is normally consumed with palm sugar.

6.Kuih Badak Berendam
Translated as: Soaking hippopotamus  snack

Despite the name, there is no hippopotamus  meat in this snack. The name is assumed to come from the way the kuih looks like, which is like a group of rhinoceros soaking together.

The kuih itself is made out of glutinous rice flour with coconut filling, and it is usually eaten together with coconut milk.

7.Kuih Gelembung Buaya
Translated as: Crocodile bubbles snack

Again, this kuih too doesn’t consist of any exotic meats. It is another mysterious kuih where no one knows how the name came about, there may be story behind it, but who really knows?

The kuih is basically dodol’s twin, and if you don’t know what the latter is, it’s another famous kuih often eaten during Raya and is made from coconut milk, jaggery and rice flour, and is sticky, thick and sweet, similar to gelembung buaya, except, gelembung buaya has two layers of colours, but the taste is basically the same.

Anyway, if you’re wondering why dodol is not on this list, that’s because we had already put it on another food list which you should definitely check out!

8.Kuih Serabai
Translated as: Messy snack

Though the name will make you think that the kuih is messy and dirty, it is actually not. The snack is sort of like the Malaysian version of pancakes. It is made out of rice flour and is eaten with durian sauce or any other sweet sauce.

Apparently, the kuih is also called the kuih mayat (corpse snack) in certain states like Penang, which is kind of creepy, but it is actually named so because the snack is usually served during funerals.

The driver of a metallic pink Ferrari which cost around RM1 million met into an accident with the driver of a Proton Preve car last Sunday, around 6am in the morning.

Both of the drivers were unhurt and they were tested negative on a breathalyser test after the accident which saw the Ferrari crash into the rear of the Proton.

“The 29-year-old driver of the Ferrari lost control and hit the rear end of the Proton Preve car which was travelling in the right lane near the Tun Razak flyover heading towards Jalan Ampang,” said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police chief ACP Mohd Nadzri Hussain as quoted by The Star.

The luxurious pink Ferrari is believed to belong to Malaysian socialite Lisa Teh, based on the various comments posted on Trafik KL’s Facebook after it shared photos of the crashed cars.

Furthermore, Lisa also shared news about the car crash on her Facebook page and said she was glad that no one was hurt, although, the one who was reported to be driving the Ferrari was a male and she didn’t not confirm nor deny that the Ferrari was in fact hers.

“The only thing that matters was no one was hurt, car destroyed can fix back or buy new one. Life is more important 😃”

Lisa Teh got her pink Ferrari during her 24th birthday back in April where she celebrated it at PLAY Club at The Roof.

The car was apparently a present from her brother.

The talented singer was in Malaysia last Sunday, 19 June 2016, where he had put on an awesome live show called, “An Evening with Greyson Chance” at Sunway Putra Mall.

According to some bystanders, the fans whom Greyson affectionately refers to as ‘Enchancers’ – have been waiting in line since morning, as soon as the mall opened.

Teenage Greyson has a huge amount of fans in Malaysia, and some of them have been his followers since his days of “Waiting Outside the Lines”.

Greyson found stardom after singing a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” which has almost 55 million views on YouTube, but Greyson took on a break for a while after his once cute voice started to crack and evolve into a mature and sexy deep tone.

“An Evening with Greyson Chance” showcase started around 9pm and the place was packed with fangirls (and a couple of fanboys!) ranging from the ages of 14 to 30.

Some fans caught our attention with their creative and colourful signs, and the most notable one said “It’s Father’s Day, but I’m here ‘cause you’re my daddy”, to which Greyson responded with, “I love you, but I’m not your daddy”.

Greyson started his showcase with a song straight from his latest EP, “Somewhere Over My Head” titled, “Afterlife”, accompanied by his amazing piano skills and soulful voice.

As soon as the first song ended, Greyson requested for his piano sound to be increased because the screaming of the Enchancers were too overwhelming to the point that he was unable to hear his own piano notes.

Greyson continued to perform more songs from his EP and a few new songs too, but the song that really got everyone there – including the bystanders – all hyped up, was when he revisited the past and performed his debut single, “Waiting Outside the Lines”.

Greyson presented the song in a different tune to suit his current vocal range, while the fans as well as non-fans kept on singing along to the nostalgic song.

Greyson also invited a special guest to duet with him for the song “Back on the Wall”, and she was Nik Qistina, a new artiste from Universal Music Malaysia, who was voted by fans to perform with Greyson on stage.

The harmony and voice chemistry between Greyson and Qistina was amazingly well-matched as Qistina possesses a high-pitched voice which is compatible with Greyson’s deep tone.

After performing for 40 minutes, Greyson wrapped up his showcase with an emotional slow track, “More Than Me”, before moving on to an autograph session with the fans.
