Songs about 'eating' banned in Cambodia for being too sexual

The government of Cambodia, particularly its Ministry of Information has banned two local songs after deeming them too sexual with their 'hidden meanings'.

Well, the reason is because both the songs had used the Cambodian word for "eat" suggestively and let us just tell you that it may or may not have nothing to do with eating food.

Keo Veasna'"If You Can Eat, Please Take as Much as You Can” and Chan Malis ''It Will Take a Very Long Time to Eat Me” apparently have rubbed the ministry the wrong way who stated that the lyrics are overly suggestive, according to The Cambodia Daily who also published some excerpts from the government's statement.

“The Information Ministry has noticed the two songs have a huge impact on the national culture’s value, and the meanings deviate seriously from Khmer morality."

“The two songs do not have hidden meanings encouraging social morality and education, but rather the meanings affect the honor and value of Khmer women.”

With a disapproval as firm as that, radios and television stations have been told to not play the songs.

This even prompted singer Chan Malis to upload a video of herself on her Facebook page to apologise on the matter and said that she will do good for her upcoming songs.

However the writer of Keo's song, Nguon Soben, had a different approach towards ban. He said that those who heard a sexual meaning in his song was the one with the dirty mind.

Last week, Nintendo released an augmented reality mobile game called Pokémon Go which allows players to capture, battle, train, and trade virtual Pokémon (short for Pocket Monster) in the real world.

In less than a week since it got launched in the U.S., everyone – especially those who grew up in the early Pokémon era – have been going nuts over this newly launched app / game!

The app is now competing with other social media apps like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as the most actively used app in terms of its daily active users, and according to Similar Web, the app was installed on more U.S. Android phones than even the Tinder app!

Furthermore, the game has also become the top grossing app on the iPhone app store just days after its release in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The game aims to encourage children or generally, people to go out more, instead of staying cooped up in their homes and also meet some new people who share the same interests, because in today’s world, people are more concerned about going online than actually going out.

Though the intention of the app is purely innocent, it may have led some players to experience some unwanted or misfortunate events, and let’s just says that it is not all fun and games with the app.

Here are some of the real unpleasant events encountered by users playing Pokémon Go that makes us think, do we really need to Catch ‘em all?

1.Minor accidents
Many players wander around the real world looking for Pokémons while their eyes are glued to the screen of their phones, and this action has led some of them into minor accidents.
21-year-old Mike Schultz, a communications graduate from Long Island, New York, fell from his skateboard and cut his hand while hunting for Pokémons after hitting a big crack.
22-year-old freelance web designer Kyrie Tompkins fell on the side walk and twisted her ankle while wandering downtown Waterville, Maine at night while playing the game.
Lindsay Plunkett, a 23-year-old waitress in Asheville, North Carolina bruised her shin after she tripped over a cinder block that had been used as a doorstop while playing the game.

2.Send players to strangers’ homes
In Pokémon Go, players get to visit a number of Pokéstops and Pokémon gyms which are typically located at popular meeting places, such as memorials, places of worship, parks and tourist attractions. But Boon Sheridan, a designer in Massachusetts who lives in a converted church discovered that his house has become a Pokémon Gym, and this causes players to gather around his house at all times. Meanwhile, a Darwin police station in Australia was featured as a Pokéstop, and players around the area were coming in to gather Pokéballs and go hunting inside the station.

3.Leading to a corpse discovery
Pokémon Go certainly will lead players to all sort of bizarre places, and some of them include toilet stalls, graveyards, church, and also strip clubs and sex shops. But what’s more shocking is that 19-year-old Shayla Wiggins from Riverton, Wyoming was hunting for “a Pokemon from a natural water resource”, AKA a water-type Pokémon but ended up discovering something way more disturbing – a dead body! “I was walking towards the bridge along the shore when I saw something in the water. I had to take a second look and I realized it was a body…It was pretty shocking,” said Shayla as reported by County 10.

4.Used to target armed-robbery victims

Fans of Pokémon would surely remember the villainous Team Rocket from the game and anime who robs and steals other players’ Pokémons. But for this app, instead of robbing Pokémon, we seem to have our very own Team Rocket who robs people for real! In Missouri, four teens whose ages range from 16 to 18, are suspected to be behind 10 to 11 armed robberies in St. Louis and St. Charles counties in the last few days. According to O'Fallon Missouri Police Department, the suspects used a beacon to lure players to a certain location and then snatched all their valuables.

Honeyed-voiced Yuna has lent her voice for the popular navigation app, Waze!

We've had Elvis Presley, Morgan Freeman, Colonel Sanders, Terminator, Darth Vader, C-3P0 and even that creepy boyband guy navigating us on the roads, but we think Malaysian singer Yuna was a right call to choose for Waze's new voice prompt!

In a special behind the scenes video released recently of Yuna in a recording studio for Waze, she says, "Hi guys, I'm Yuna. I'll sing your way to your next destination!"

"I'm very excited, I actually use Waze especially when I'm driving in L.A., going to the studio. So I won't get lost!"

Apparently Yuna's Waze collaboration is also a collaboration with Japan's Calpis cultured milk drink for which Yuna is an ambassador for.

As Malaysia's first singing voice pack, we must say that Yuna's voice has made driving that much more pleasurable, especially when her sweet singing voice is guiding you through traffic hell!

Hey, we might even say goodbye to road rage thanks to Yuna!

Watch the video to listen to how Yuna's voice pack would sound like for Waze, which is now available to download on all android and iOS devices.

It’s scary how a single game can get you so worked up!

Well, we’re not talking about just any game – it’s Pokémon Go after all, and it matters!

Last Sunday, an Australian working in Singapore by the name of Sonny Truyen started a Facebook war after posting a rude remark about the country he is staying in.

In case you don’t know what Pokémon Go is, read this article we just wrote explaining about the new app / game, and how people’s obsession on it has gone a little bit too far.

Anyway, Pokémon Go was recently launched last week and isn’t available in several countries yet, including Singapore.

This resulted in Truyen’s outburst, where he referred to Singapore as a “piece of f**king sh*t country”.

A proud Singaporean who goes by the name of Adelene Kong came across his post and then got into an intense Facebook war with Truyen.

After the intense exchanges, other users immediately launched a witch hunt and found out that Truyen was the vice president of digital marketing for a local real estate site, 99.co.

Netizens then began leaving complaints on 99.co Facebook page, urging them to fire the expat.

On the same day, 99.co's CEO Darius Cheung posted an apology on the company’s blog and informed that Truyen had been terminated from his contract.

1) Sonny, an SEO specialist, has only started consulting for us for a week before the incident happened.
2) We are a proud Singaporean company and do not condone such language or behaviour, hence we have since terminated his engagement once the incident came to light.
I apologise on behalf of 99.co, we pride ourselves to be a principled company that celebrates values like diversity and equality. We take responsibility for the public behaviour of any employee or consultant affiliated with us as a reflection of the company.

Read the full statement here.

According to Branding Asia, Truyen also previously worked at Malaysian startup, iPrice Group earlier this year and just recently joined 99.co.

Mashable reached out to him about the incident which he reply in a statement, “It was a dick move on my behalf and a very big error in judgement to negatively label an entire country over Pokémon. It was very wrong of me to rage like that.”

“However in my defense, I was racially vilified for not being a 'white' Australian. It was disappointing the lengths Singaporeans went at to attack me and deny any chance of making amends for my actions,” he added.

Truyen appears to have deactivated or deleted all of his social media accounts.

Remember that viral video Lite FM posted awhile back of the KL Bomba men firing up the dance floor for the Running Man Challenge?

If you thought that was cool, wait until you see the video the Perak state police department have produced for Raya!

The five-minute video was released on 5 July 2016 but started going viral only a few days ago. It has gotten more than 6,000 views on Facebook and over 150 shares!

The video is about how the police force has to work during the Raya holidays in order to protect the safety of the society, even though they too wish that they can go home and meet their loved ones.

Also, the song is actually a parody version of Khalifah’s famous “Hang Pi Mana” song (P.S. They also have another version called “Hang Pi Raya”) – but the lyrics were changed to suit the context.

Some of the funny lyrics include “eating kuih raya and drinking plain water inside the patrol car” or “meeting ‘old friends’ who needed to wear handcuffs”.

According to Fadzil Ahmat, the Perak Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), the video clip is not part of the Perak’s police department official videos, but was just made to follow the latest trend, My Metro reports.

Pokémon Go fever is still going strong today, but many fans – especially those in Asia – are questioning why it hasn’t it been released in Asia yet.

Like seriously, Pokémon is from Japan, if anything, it should be launched in Asia first!

Anyway, looks like Asian fans won’t have to worry or be angry no more as the game / mobile app is reportedly set to be launched in the region “within a few days” according to The Wall Street Journal as cited by The Verge.

Though we can’t confirm on this as there has been no official comment on this by the game developers as of yet.

Many game experts predicted that the game will be released around 24 hours from now, and according to Pokémon Go Asia Wordpress, it is because:-

  1. The iOS App Store refreshes every Thursdays globally, indicating an opportune time to release in both iOS and Android stores.
  2. Servers have been strengthening the past few days, increasing load capacity.
  3. Stronger and lesser reports of glitches happening, signalling an imminent release of the game in Asia.
  4. “People Familiar with the Plans of The Game” stating that its release is imminent.  – 11th July 2016
  5. Windows of servers opening within Asia, from 30 minutes to 2 Hours. 10th – 11th July 2016

So get ready catch some Pokémons y’all, but be careful not to be too obsessed with it, because you don’t want to get hurt!
