“This year, we are pleased to bring fans a magnetic performance by one of the best-selling artistes in American music history,” said Sepang International Circuit (SIC) Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Razlan Razali in a statement.

“In 2010, 10,000 Usher fans in Malaysia had the opportunity to catch their favourite star in concert, so don’t miss your chance this year,” he added.

Taking place from 30 September to 2 October 2016, the R&B prince is one of the biggest stars that SIC has brought in for the F1 after-race concert!

Phnom Penh-based band, Krom, has become the first ever Cambodian band to be nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards, the highest honour anyone can ever receive in the music industry – and the band is not nominated in just one, but two categories!

Formed by singer and guitarist Christopher Minko, an Australian living in Cambodia, Krom is a five-member band consisting of sisters and vocalists Sophea Chamroeun and Sopheak Chamroeun, guitarist Jimmy Baeck and bassist James “Mao” Sokleap.

According to Cambodia Daily, the band is nominated for the Best World Music Album category for their third studio album, “Mekong Delta Blues”, and also the Song of the Year category for one of their tracks titled “Lil’ Suzy”, a sad song about prostitution and sexual slavery.

Unlike other bands, Krom, which means “group” in Khmer, plays a unique blend of Delta blues sound with traditional Khmer, and covers sensitive topics like prostitution, slavery and human trafficking.

“Of course Krom is honoured if we can even partly contribute towards the growing international recognition of the cultural and artistic renaissance in Cambodian culture,” said Minko, guitarist of the band who sometimes provides vocals.

“We also hope that this will open up international touring potentials for Krom and are now in planning with our label for performance tours of Europe, USA, Canada and Australia.”

Is Selena Gomez too “sexy” for Malaysia?

In less than one week, pop star Selena Gomez is slated to perform in Malaysia as part of her “Revival Tour”, however, PAS Youth seems to object to the idea of the 23-year-old staging her concert in the country as they deem the singer to be too “sexy”, and her presence would disgrace the holy month of Syawal.

“The presence of the American-born singer, who is synonymous with sexy appearances, would tarnish the sanctity of the month of Syawal which is being celebrated in earnest and further stoke the hedonistic culture among the country’s youths,” said Dakwah committee chairman Hafez Sabri in a statement as quoted by The Star.

The singer is the Queen of Instagram, having the most followers and most-liked picture on the photo-sharing platform.
(Photo sources: gq.com, applehdwallpaper.com, fashiongonerogue.com)

He also stated that he is disappointed that the local authorities had given approval to the local organiser to hold the concert, and he also urged the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) to issue an official letter to protest against the concert.

“It is a priority and the responsibility of PAS Youth to ensure that there are no elements which can destroy the younger generation. Hence, we are committed to opposing such a concert,” he said.
Selena Gomez is hardly the first artiste in the country to get protested by conservative Islamic parties.

Other performers who were previously objected to perform in Malaysia include the Pussycat Dolls, Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé, Adam Lambert and Kesha.

Hopefully, all will be well and Selena Gomez’s concert in Malaysia will go on as planned next Monday, 25 July 2016 at the Malawati Indoor Arena, Shah Alam.

Yuna hugs Usher and people go crazy!

Yuna has become the talk of the town again, but this time for a not so good reason.

A video of she and R&B singer Usher hugging have gone viral on social media, causing some haters to question her ‘boundaries and limit’ as a Muslim woman.

Yuna recently performed her hit song “Crush” with Usher during one of her live gigs in Philadelphia. At the end of the song, the singer and Usher hugged spontaneously, and this has caused criticism among certain netizens.

“My father always told me ‘You make your own decision. You can think. Why do you have to listen to other people?’ Isn’t it weird, the biggest racism and discrimination that I’ve ever faced, was never from the Americans – it was from my own race,” Yuna said in a long Instagram post.

“There I’ve said it. They call me ‘perempuan sampah’ and tell me to ‘might as well go naked’. The worst, hurtful and sexist things I’ve ever had thrown to me, were from the lips of the Malays. All I can do is be patient. Allah is great. And Alhamdulillah for everything.”

“So this is me. I will wear whatever I want. I will show my appreciation whether it's a handshake, or a hug, to my friends, this is me. Save your mediocre downgrading religious preach to yourself, they have no meaning to me,” she continued.

Throwback from when I was on Barney's campaign 2014 celebrating cultural differences, shot by Bruce Weber. I remember when this first came out I was so scared of posting it because I knew the extremely rude conservative Malays (mind you I'm conservative too) would attack me for revealing my neck. Honestly. At this moment I was comfortable. The stylists from Barney's were kind and respectful of my beliefs and let me wear this beautiful shirt dress. I get to pose with this lovely Punjabi couple along with a fellow half Malaysian model who later became my friend. People ask me what ethnicity I am I tell them I am Malay. Why can't you wear a short dress? I tell them I am Muslim. Someone once told me my experience is mine. No one else is living it. No one has lived it. Outsiders have the illusion that they can tell you how to live your life because- they have lived theirs letting OTHER people tell them how to live. My father always told me 'You make your own decision. You can think. Why do you have to listen to other people?' Isn't it weird, the biggest racism and discrimination that I've ever faced, was never from the Americans- it was from my own race. There I've said it. They call me 'perempuan sampah' and tell me to ''might as well go naked'. The worst, hurtful & sexist things I've ever had thrown to me, were from the lips of the Malays. All I can do is be patient. Allah is great. And Alhamdulillah for everything. So this is me. I will wear whatever I want. I will show my appreciation whether it's a handshake, or a hug, to my friends, this is me. Save your mediocre downgrading religious preach to yourself, they have no meaning to me. I have some Americans telling me to take my hijab off, and I tell them no. I have some Malays tell me to take my hijab off because 'from wearing a turban might as well take off your hijab', I tell them no too. I am me. Tada! Expect more candidness from your fun, happy, Yuna. May it inspire you to be yourself too without letting the toxic people around you define you or how you should be. No regrets, no hard feelings I will continue to empower women and men everywhere as long as I live inshaAllah. Lepas ni.. no filter! Yay!!

Many fans came to Yuna’s defence explaining that the singer didn’t hug Usher on purpose, as one user explained, “From the very beginning, it can be seen that Yuna tried to keep her distance from Usher. Usher approached her, she moved from here to there.”

“At the end, Usher opened his hands to give Yuna a hug. Yuna bowed down to him, maybe as an act of refusal. But Usher seems insisting to do so. So she just awkwardly hugged him. I can tell by looking at her body language,” said Facebook user Lugman San.

The fans are not the only ones defending the Malaysian star, another famous Malaysian singer, Shila Amzah who currently stays overseas also voiced out her opinion on the situation.

“I do understand how hard it is to live abroad. They don’t understand our culture. Not that we want to turn what is haram into something halal, but before her, there’s already a lot of them (hugging) on TV.”

Meanwhile, Yuna tweeted “Drinking tea while reading the comments from haters before going into soundcheck”.

Despite speculations that Selena Gomez’s concert in Malaysia might get cancelled, it has been confirmed by ALIFE that it will indeed go on.

ALIFE is a non-profit body representing concert organisers in Malaysia.

The organisation had released an official statement clarifying that Selena Gomez’s show in Malaysia will go on and it will also be “in accordance to the PUSPAL’s dress code and performance guidelines.”

“The industry, ALIFE and government agencies such as PUSPAL, Tourism Malaysia, local councils and police have been working hard to bridge the gap between international events and local sensitivity. We have faith that regulators will be able to do their job without the interference of political parties, politicians and media sensationalism,” the statement stated.

There will also be security control during the concert to prevent any inappropriately unforeseen event.

“In the case of Selena Gomez, the organizer has provided details to government agencies involved in approving events after studying all aspects of the event especially in terms of safety, performer dress code and event location,” ALIFE continued.

“All permits have already been obtained.”

For real? There's an “Archie” TV series?

Think Archie and you'll think of all your favourite teen comic characters in the catchy and fun “Sugar, Sugar” music video, amirite?

But hey, that fun-loving Archie and gang you once knew are no more!

Say bye bye to the comic and animated version of Archie and the gang...
Say hello to your new millennial Archie Andrews.
A new live-action TV series by The CW (the same network that brought you "The Vampire Diaries", "Arrow", "The Flash", "Supergirl" and more) is set to deliver a darker spin on your childhood "Archie" come 2017.

Instead of "Archie", the show will be called "Riverdale", and yup as per the comics it's the exact Riverdale where Archie and the gang call home!

Since this won't be an animated series, the real-life cast will be made up of K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, Luke Perry as Fred Andrews, and Casey Cott as Kevin Kellar.

OK, let us just take a quick pause here to tell you that Jughead is played by another one of your childhood idols; Cole Sprouse, yes, THAT Sprouse twin from Disney's "The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody"!

Meet Archie, Veronica, Jughead and Betty.
Best friends Archie (K.J. Apa) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse).
As for the story, the modern "Twin Peaks" inspired take is narrated by Jughead and will not see Archie chasing the skirts of Betty and Veronica (or will he?), but will see the millennial Riverdale High gang reeling after a death of one of their own. Also, Archie is said to be a character who had just recently ended a 'forbidden relationship' with his high school music teacher, Ms. Grundy, Veronica might be a bisexual and Betty's got a drug problem.

Whoa, where were all of these parts in the comics?!

If you are lucky enough to attend the San Diego Comic Con happening this weekend in the U.S.A. then we heard that the pilot episode will be screened for lucky fans!

But... if you're stuck in Asia like the rest of us are, then at least you have this exclusive Comic Con poster of the series to feast your eyes upon!

What is it like being a Comedian? These Comedians speak!

Get ready to laugh-out-loud with Comedy Central's first Asian original stand-up series, “Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia!”, an 8-part series produced by Comedy Central Asia in collaboration with LOL Events Malaysia!

The series is set to feature 24 popular Asian comedic acts from the region and across the world, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the different flavours of Asian stand-up.

“We’re excited to bring Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia! to viewers in line with our continued aim to promote Asian comedy and place a spotlight on some of the most talented comedians from around the region,” said Paras Sharma, Senior Vice President of MTV, Comedy Central & Paramount Channel Brands and Digital Media, Asia, Viacom International Media Networks.

The comedic acts involved in this series include Ron Josol (Canada), Vivek Mahbubani (Hong Kong), Mo Sidik (Indonesia), Douglas Lim (Malaysia), GB Labrador (Philippines), Sharul Channa (Singapore), Chris Wright (Thailand), Atsuko Okatsuka (U.S.), Neeti Palta (India) and more!

TheHive.Asia attended the press conference of “Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia!” a few days ago and had a chat with Douglas Lim, Andrew Netto, Tim Tayag, Mo Sidik and Neeti Palta.

Douglas, you have been in the comedy scene for so long now, how much has the scene evolved in Malaysia?

Douglas: We have a bigger audience now and many venues too! Back then, when Harith [Iskander] and I first started, venues like this never existed. We were doing corporate events immediately when we started and that is the wrong way to start as a comedian. As a comedian you’re supposed to start in rooms like this with open mics, in small places where you can hone your skills. But we were thrown into the deep end, and for us, it’s either you sink or you swim. Right now we have venues like Live House and Prank House, we have One Mic Stand at PJ Live Arts, Comedy Kau Kau at The Bee Publika, so this is how far we have gone. And now Malaysia is hosting Comedy Central Asia? How did we even get this far?  It’s amazing!

Mo: Because it’s a lot cheaper in Malaysia.

Douglas: So says the Indonesian! [laughs]

Malaysian comedian, Douglas Lim.

Is it true that most comedy material comes from personal dark stories and they've been turned into jokes because laughter is the only way to cope with it?

Neeti: I think all jokes have some elements of truth in it. We will laugh it off and everything, but all jokes come from somewhere truthful, that’s what I believe.

Mo: I was bullied when I was young, because I’m a fat person. So I write my experience down and make it a material for my comedy routine. So I guess my story is quite dark.

Tim: I think like what Neeti said, there has to be a grain of truth, and I also believe that there’s some kind of pain, because people can relate to pain. So when you shed light on that pain that’s when the laughter comes out, because if there’s no pain, there’s nothing really for you to laugh about.

Andrew: For me, I use this as a platform to speak up, I like to speak up against everyone. I was raised in a very strict Indian household, so I use comedy as a way for me to speak up. I’m also very vocal on my views. A lot of people don’t agree because they don’t like what I say, but it’s okay because I don’t like them also – it works perfectly well for me! [laughs]

Andrew Netto also from Malaysia, doing a stand-up.

Douglas: What Tim said is very true, the comedy comes from a dark place, different from what you see on stage. But the formula that we kind of understand is that good equals to not funny! Nice things are not funny. People ask why I always joke about racism and corruption, and why I don’t joke about perpaduan (unity). How do you even joke about unity? [laughs]

How do you usually prepare your routines, and how much of your comedy is improvised?

Neeti: I think a lot of the energy translates from the audience. I know that if I’ve gone on stage for an open mic with some half-baked ideas, trying the material for the first time, I’m unsure if the story will go well. But if the audience is laughing and reacting, it gives me energy to be funnier. Although the material is scripted in my head, a lot of the impromptu is born from someone’s reaction to your jokes.

Tim: I usually have a set list. Though most of the time I don’t follow it, it is more like an outline for me to know what I should do next. But sometimes an idea will suddenly come up as I am telling my jokes, so I will kind of play with it and see where it takes me, and like what Neeti said, it’s the audience reaction. When they react, then you add to that and see what else you can get. If it gets me nowhere, I always have the jokes that I want to do as a backup.

Tim Tayag from the Philippines is on a roll with his skit.

Mo: In Indonesia, comedy is known as “lawak”, and it is usually improvised. You have to have a really good talent to do lawak. They barely write down their material, and that’s what they’ve been doing in Indonesia, and I cannot do that. I tried so many times, I cannot improvise jokes. For stand-up comedy, there are a lot of books about it, they have the information on how to write down jokes but you must practice. This is one of the art forms that requires a lot of challenge but little hard work. That’s different from the lawak in Indonesia.

Andrew: I love to improvise on stage. I like to interact with the crowd a lot. It’s also because I’m very lazy to write. Improvisation gives me a lot of freedom, because I’m very opinionated so I can just talk to anybody, pick up a story from them and form my jokes. I really love to improvise on stage.

Douglas: I’m a hundred percent scripted. Everything, every pause, and every look – it’s all written. I can show you my script to prove it. You can read it and perform it, but it won’t be as good as me. [laughs] I’m not joking, I do write everything.

Andrew: That itself is a talent of its own. For someone who can sit down and write down his jokes, and then perform it afterwards and still makes people laugh, that is just amazing!

How do you usually handle awkward situations, like when people don’t laugh at your jokes?

Douglas: I punch them! [laughs]

Mo: I would just take off my clothes and everybody will laugh. [laughs]

Tim: Won’t that make things more awkward? [laughs] I usually just call out the situation like, “Wow, that was awkward!” Then people will start laughing again because I’m acknowledging it and I’m not trying to pretend that everything is okay.

Neeti: Yeah, most of the time we would say something like, “Hmm, that was funnier in my head,” because it obviously was, that’s why I was trying to share it in the first place. Or maybe we would start addressing it to the people, because the moment you acknowledge the situation, it will kind of unwind on its own.

India's Neeti Palta is quite new with stand-up comedy but is making strides with it!

Douglas: What comedians usually do is something called “calling it”, which means whatever is very obvious in the room, even if it’s not in the room, if it’s something time sensitive, like the time the GST was implemented, it was on people’s mind, so you have to call the issue, you cannot go on stage and just ignore it.

If “bad equals to funny” I’m sure that each of you often make sarcastic jokes, how do you usually get away with these types of jokes or mockery?

Andrew: Because we are smarter than the people that are trying to catch us. So we thread very carefully about what we do. We are always one step ahead of them. You must never name drop, it can get you into trouble.

Douglas: But we are too small.

Neeti: Yeah, we’re too much under the radar, I think in India, English stand-up comedy is very niche. Only lately we've started coming under the lens, so to speak. But I always make sure that whatever I’m saying I can standby it like I’m not attacking any individual personally. It’s a very fine line, you know.

Tim: I think one of the ways you can get away with it is, well I usually try this, like if it’s a sensitive issue, and I know that this is going to cause some controversy, I try to direct it towards myself, like how is this going to affect me or how am I struggling because of this. If you speak on how you’re having a hard time, then it’s not so controversial anymore.

Mo: Indonesia right now is in its Golden period because we have a cool president, so we can say anything we want.

Douglas: Yeah, Jokowi is cool, that’s how it should be!

Mo: Except for religion-related topics, but everything else is fine.

Mo Sidik from Indonesia is known for his fat jokes.

There is indeed a fine line in comedy with sensitive topics, so have any of you ever crossed the line?

Mo: Yeah, I've gotten criticised by fat people before.

Neeti: The problem is who draws the line?

Douglas: And the line keeps moving.

Neeti: Yeah, it moves all the time. I’ve been criticised by women because I make fun of them even though I am one of them. But if can’t who will? [laughs] So the line keeps moving, and it is set by different people, so I only stick to the line I draw for myself.

Tim: Can I use that line? [laughs] It sounds so cool!

Douglas: I move so fast, I am the line!

All: Ooooooohhh…[laughs]

Neeti: You know Amitabh Bachchan said that way before you were born. He says, “The line starts from where I stand.”

Douglas: He didn’t really say it because somebody wrote it for him. [laughs]

Mo: I’m so big, you cannot see the line. [laughs] Everybody’s like “Where’s the line?”

Douglas: He covers the line! [laughs]

The comedians from “Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia!”

Okay, lastly, what can you say about Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia?

Mo: It is awesome! The Comedy Central logo, I’ll be honoured to have that logo on my poster someday. I have dreamt about it, and right now I can use it!

Neeti: I think it’s such a huge effort and I can’t believe that it all happened. When I received the call, they were like, “Would you like to be a part of this”, I was like, “Would I? Of course!” And yeah, that logo is like a stamp, a quality of mark to us.

Mo: And I’m the only one from Indonesia.

Neeti: Wooohh!

Douglas: What are you “woooohh-ing” for? There are three representatives from India.

Neeti: We have 1.2 billion people, man! Three doesn’t matter. [laughs]

Tim: It was unbelievably amazing, and like they said, the logo is such an honour. I have a tattoo of the logo now! [laughs] Can’t wait to see the actual airing of this!

Andrew: It was cool to be a part of this, it’s a real honour. Of course for us, Comedy Central is like a seal of approval for comedians. This is something that we can brag about!

Douglas: Yeah, we all feel the same way.

“Comedy Central Stand-up, Asia!” premieres on Tuesday, 23 August 2016 at 7.55pm (TH/WIB), 8.55pm (HK/PH/SG/TW) and 9.55pm (MY).

Unless you've been living under a rock, then you know that Pokémon Go is slowly but surely taking over the world!

As the game has now made its way to most parts of the world, eagerly awaiting gamers and Pokémon fans in Malaysia are facing the game not being released at all.

Malaysia's Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has stated that the police would be monitoring the game before deciding if it should be banned in Malaysia.

Why so serious? It's only a game, right?

Well, not according to the IGP who says that the game hasthus far caused issues in other countrieslike road accidents, robbery and more.

"This is a game. If it is against the law, then we will take action. We will monitor the situation first before deciding if it should be banned," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.

On the other hand, Penang Mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor is calling for Pokémon Go to be declared "haram" altogether.

As reported in Sinar Harian, a supposed 'study' by the mufti's department has deduced that the negatives outweigh the positives of the game.

"We hope the National Fatwa Council will ban the game as soon as possible," he was quoted as saying.

Even across the border, Singapore Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said that the pros and cons of the game needs to be studied before a decision was made.

Indonesia has banned the game among its civil servants and visitors to Japan's Shinto Shrine of Izumo-taisha are banned from playing the game at the premises.

The location-based, augmented reality fame for mobile devices was first launched on 6 July 2016 in Australia, New Zealand and United States.

With a quickly growing fan base, it finally made its way to Asia with its release in Japan on 22 July 2016 and then in Hong Kong on 25 July with a September release date planned for Thailand.

No release date has been planned for Malaysia and other Southeast Asia countries yet, but it is expected to be by this year as well.

Singing sensation Shila Amzah has been appointed as the ambassador of a newly launched airline called MonSpace Sky Airlines which is reported to be license-less.

A photo posted by 茜拉shila amzah (@shahilaamzah) on

Operated by Suasa Air Sdn Bhd, the airline which is owned by Dr Jessy Lai reportedly flies from KLIA and will be running domestic flights to Langkawi, Kedah, and also international flights to Mecca and also several places in Mainland China, including Hangzhou, Chongqing, Xi-An and Chengdu.

Shila Amzah and Macau’s famous TV host Maria Cordero were the celebrities present during the launch of MonSpace Sky’s maiden flight from Subang Airport to Langkawi on Sunday.

However, the Ministry of Transport are unaware of the existence of this new carrier.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai claimed that the airline was never approved by Putrajaya and shouldn’t have been allowed to fly.

“This is a very serious offence. How can you fly without a licence?” said the Minister as quoted by The Star.

The airline only received an Air Operator’s Certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), and this still doesn’t allow them to operate flights.

Liow also said that the airline shall not be allowed to operate until they receive an Air Service Permit (ASP) from Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom).

We’re not sure if any of you have noticed this, but there has been a group of ladies (five to be exact) in all-black attire and bunny masks wandering around the Klang Valley area lately.

The mysterious ‘bunny ladies’ who reminds us of the bunnies from the Playboy mansion, were spotted in places like food courts, cafes and even at the Selena Gomez “Revival” concert!

At first, they seemed to be Selena Gomez’s backup dancers or crew but apparently that wasn’t the case!

Some curious bystanders even took photos of these mysterious bunnies despite not knowing the intentions behind their get up.

Who could they be? Could they be from a circus troupe, or are they trying to start some sort of weird bunny-related fashion movement?

What do you guys think? Have you spotted them in your area too?
