Highlights of the Rio Olympics 2016 opening ceremony

The 2016 Summer Olympics a.k.a. Rio 2016, launched with a vibrant and explosive opening ceremony in Brazil over the weekend!

The ceremony kicked off with some amazing choreography as dancers using silver floats recreated an awesome 10 to 0 countdown in Portuguese.

Then, Paulinho da Viola took the stage with an acoustic guitar, leading the crowd with a mellow version of the Brazilian national anthem as the Brazilian flag was raised.

Rio then decided to go back in time by presenting an abridged history of Brazil with a simple but beautiful act, depicting the beginning of life on Earth and the early days in the Amazon rainforest.

With the use of hundreds of acrobats and performers, the ceremony then progressed into modern-day Brazil, and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen who dressed in shimmery silver gown appeared on stage and sashayed across the Maracana Stadium to the tune of the “Girl from Ipanema”.

Samba singer Elza Soares who is known as the “Brazilian Tina Turner” also took the stage, alongside younger artistes like Ludmilla, Karol Conka and 12-year-old MC Soffia.

After a number of other performances and presentations including a poem read by Dame Judy Dench addressing the Global Warming issue, the Parade of the Nations then took over, with Greece traditionally leading the way.

Flag bearer Michael Phelps led the U.S. Olympic team as he confidently marched through the stadium while wearing a Ralph Lauren blazer with illuminated panels on the front and back.

In traditional baju kurung and baju melayu, the Malaysian Olympic team was led by national shuttler Lee Chong Wei.

As expected, the cheering got louder when the Brazil team entered the stage, marking the end of the parade.

For the grand finale, the Olympic rings appeared from the ground, but instead of the traditional multi-coloured rings, the rings were green and were made up of trees.

The ceremony was concluded with the lighting of the Olympic flame, a responsibility that was originally going to be executed by football legend Pele, but he declined the role due to his failing health.

The honour was then given to former Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima.

Beginner guides and tips to play Pokémon Go!

$
0
0

You’ve probably already heard that Pokémon Go is now officially available for download in 15 new countries and regions across Asia and Oceania!

So here, we have a beginner’s guide and tips for all you first-time Pokémon trainers!

1.Start off with Pikachu as your first Pokémon

When you start the game you will get to choose either Charmander (fire-type), Squirtle (water-type) or Bulbasaur (grass-type) as a starter, much like the original anime. When you see the three normal starters appear on your map, simply walk away. When you've moved far away enough, the Pokémons will pop up again. Keep walking away from them until Pikachu appears!

2.Don’t bother catching them when driving or hitching a ride

When the game first launched in the US, some users got hurt for not paying attention to their surroundings, so new recent updates of the game have made it so that less to no Pokémons will appear on the road (unless you’re driving in housing areas).

3.Go to malls or places where many people would gather

Places like shopping malls, restaurants, bus stops or parks. To put it simply, places that have a lot of Pokéstops (you can see it through the app) as Pokémons are usually gathered there too!

4.Beware of Pokéstops with lure modules

If you don’t know yet, lure models can be installed at Pokéstops and it will attract many Pokémons and sometimes even rare ones. And this will also automatically attract other users to that Pokéstop too. If it’s in the morning or you are with a large group of people, it is okay for you to go to the Pokéstop, but if it’s at night, you better just go home as it has been reported that this is a new way for criminals to commit crimes like kidnapping or robbing you!

5.Hatch Pokémon eggs while driving

Remember that we mentioned earlier that you shouldn’t catch while driving (refer to point No.2)? But even if you are not catching any Pokémon while in the car, you can still leave the app on as it is a good way for you to hatch your Pokémon eggs, because the distance will still be counted, and it doesn’t matter if you’re walking, running, cycling or driving.

6.Keep a look out for rustling grass

In the map, sometimes you will see rustling grass here and there, so try and get close to that area as chances are some Pokémons may be lurking nearby.

7.It’s okay to catch the same type of Pokémon over and over again

There are 150 types of Pokémon that can be registered in your Pokédex, so most of you may have dismissed catching the same type of Pokémon especially the commonly seen Pidgey and Rattata. But it is actually important for you to keep catching Pokémons as you seen them regardless if you’ve already have them in your Pokédex, as these Pokémons can give you candies and stardust. Certain kind of candies can let your Pokémon evolve while stardust can be used to increase the level of your Pokémon.

8.Catch Pokémon with PokeMobile

In Malaysia, Hotlink and Grab have collaborated to introduce vehicles that help in hunting Pokémons. The rides are free and it will send Pokémon trainers to the nearest Pokéstop. Also, trainers of the day will be given USD100 worth of PokeCoins!

9.Different types of Pokémon will appear at different times of the day

If you catch Pokémons during different times of the day (morning, noon and night), you will notice that different types of Pokémon will appear even if you’re stuck in the same area.

So time to cue the Pokémon theme song, lads and ladies because it is time for you to catch em’ all!

Meet the Hong Kong-born Indian comedian, Vivek Mahbubani

$

Growing up in Hong Kong sure wasn’t easy, especially if you’re from a minority race who possesses a feature that makes you really stand out. Such is the case of stand-up comedian Vivek Mahbubani who is a Sindhi of Indian descent and was born and raised in Hong Kong.

With his ability to speak both English and Cantonese fluently, Vivek manages to tackle racism issues very delicately and turn it into something comical where people can relate to, and thus, earning him more fans along the way.

Vivek first started his stand-up comedy in 2007, and in that same year, he was crowned Hong Kong's funniest person at the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival for the Cantonese-language category, and in the following year, he won the English language category of the competition.

Some of the comedians who inspired Vivek into taking up stand-up comedy includes Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, and Chris Rock, but unlike them, Vivek is more than just a simple entertainer, he is also a multi-award winning web designer with his own design firm and is also the drummer of Hong Kong metalcore band Eve of Sin.

So how does he manage to keep his life in order? Read up on our interview with him and find out more about this funny comedian!

How would you describe your comedy style?
It is mostly fun and about life in general. It does not necessarily have to be too edgy, its more like the silly things that happen to me as a person and also the weird things that people do that catches my attention.

Like for example, these days, when I watch zombie movies, I noticed that they don’t have any Asian zombies. I mean like why isn’t there Asian zombies, are we not good enough for them? [laughs]

So basically, my style is more like I’m having fun with life and I would point out all the silly and quirky things that happen to me every day.

So you grew up in Hong Kong, and in many of your shows you've mentioned that people don’t know how to pronounce your name, so why didn't you give yourself a Chinese name?
I had a Chinese name in primary school because that was the rules, but it never connected to me, I never liked it. People call me Ah Vee, or just Vee. And I find that if you can’t even pronounce the letter “V”, then we can’t be friends anymore, we’re done! [laughs]

Do you speak Hindi or Sindhi?
Not really. Because at home when I was growing up, my parents were afraid that my sister and I could not speak English, so they didn’t allow us to speak Hindi or Sindhi at home. But they don’t realise that we’re not born with the ability to speak Hindi or Sindhi, so that’s why we don’t speak the languages.

In school I spoke Cantonese, so the languages that I know are English and Cantonese. I do understand key words like “Where’s my pocket money” or “Where’s dinner?” but that’s all I know. I can only say the key things to survive but I can’t have a proper conversation in Hindi or Sindhi.

How do the Indians view you then?
They don’t want their daughters to marry me! [laughs]

Some of them look at me like I’m incomplete. But I believe that because today’s world is very global, it’s more than just you not knowing your language. It’s more like, in your heart, what do you consider yourself as?

I don’t really have any problem with that, but there are some really traditional Indians who would condemn me for not speaking my own language, but I will learn one day, there’s plenty of time!

How is Cantonese comedy different from English comedy?
The culture, education and maturity of the audience. For example, if I’m doing a comedy for an English-speaking audience, most of them have watched western comedies before, so they know how stand-up comedy works. But for the Cantonese-speaking audience, many of them may not know the concept of stand-up comedy, so they will be like, “So, you just talk? There’s no singing or dancing?”

I don’t blame them because they’re not used to that mentality. It doesn’t make sense to you until you see it. At the same time, there’s different kind of comedies. For example, Hong Kong people are used to guys like Dayo Wong (Wong Chee Wah) and Jan Lamb (Lam Hoi Fung), these are the kinds of guys who do like two hours of show in big stadiums.

They’re very funny, but they have different styles as their comedy has a slower pace and they have 2-hour of materials that they want to talk about. Meanwhile, I’m trying to come up a 10-minute or 8-minute set, a quick comedy. But some people don’t get it, you know. They’re like, “10 minutes, that’s all?” So, I’m hoping that people will start to know that this is the new form of comedy.

What do you usually do when people don’t laugh at your jokes?
First of all, over the years, I’ve become better so that has reduced. [laughs]

What I do is to try to acknowledge the situation like, “Oh well, that didn’t work” or “That’s awkward”. Sometimes, I try to make jokes out of the situation like, “You know, if you don’t laugh at me, that’s racism.” So that’s what I usually do.

A lot of us, we’re trying to be good at heart, so we don’t want to pressure people into laughing but it's more like I'm asking them to have fun. We’re trying to push it as a party rather than just have them listen to us perform.

Do you face competition from other comedians in Hong Kong?
Well, in general there are two tiers. There are the celebrity TV comedians and the grassroots guys who do shows at local bars.

It’s different levels because the audience that watch the celebrity comedy are fans of those celebrities, but the comedy that I’m trying to bring about is also celebrity level, but also something that the general public can relate to.

So the competition is different in the sense that, if this is a street full of different restaurants, I would not have to worry that people might not want to eat what I have because people have to eat. It’s just that, today they might have this food, but tomorrow they’re going to try a different food. So I’m not worried.

The biggest challenge would be the competition between different kinds of entertainment, like for example deciding whether you should go sing karaoke or laugh because time is money, so that’s the challenge. Especially in Hong Kong, time is very valuable. People would be like, “You better be really funny if I’m going to spend my night with you.” [laughs]

What is the most interesting thing that you notice when you're in Malaysia?
The most interesting thing is that I speak better Cantonese than all the locals here. [laughs]

Another interesting thing to me is that I get to eavesdrop so much more here because the Hong Kong people already know who I am, but here nobody knows me. No one would even have the slightest idea. [laughs]

Vivek with all the other comedians from Asia.

You're a web designer, a comedian, and also a drummer, how do you balance your career?
Welcome to Hong Kong mentality, man! You just somehow squeeze them all in! [laughs]

I find that everything has its seasons and periods. Like peak season for comedy would somehow coincide with the lower season of web design. For example, every end of the year, there will be a lot of year end annual parties, and that’s when people want to close down their business, round things up and hold off their projects. So they start a party and that’s when the comedy comes in.

But during the middle of the year, that’s when comedy steps back because everybody is focusing on their work.

Meanwhile, drumming for me is a good way to spend time and do something different, but they all kind of connect together. For example, my web design work requires me to have a logical way of thinking, and that inspires me to make jokes that make sense, so that people can relate.

Also, with drumming you learn rhythm, and comedy is also about timing and rhythm, like the way you say certain things. You have to follow the pace and make sure that you’re not too fast or not too slow because you don’t want to leave the audience hanging.

What else can you tell us about yourself?
Actually, I’m also an MMA ring announcer. So yeah, again, I’m just squeezing everything in.

It’s a lot of fun because people in Hong Kong have very cute names, and saying their names with a ring announcer voice is really funny! For example, there’s this girl named Winky, and I would go like “Wiiiinnnkyyyyyy!” But then I feel like the name doesn’t sound very aggressive, cause it was just a bit too cute. [laughs]

Another famous Japanese anime is getting the live-action treatment.

Reki Kawahara’s famous novel “Sword Art Online” will soon be adapted into a Hollywood live-action television series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, America’s Skydance Television has recently acquired the global live-action rights to the anime and is currently in the process of developing the television series.

“Sword Art Online” first became famous in Japan as a series of light novels in 2009, and then as an anime series in 2012.

Though the anime did not achieve quite the same breakout success among western audiences as animes like “Dragon Ball” or “Ghost in the Shell”, “Sword Art Online” still proved to be a massive hit for fans of video games and animation.

The series is famous enough to spawn multiple anime seasons, manga retellings, and five video game adaptations.

The pilot episode of the live-action adaptation will be written by American screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis who has worked on renowned films like “Shutter Island” and “Terminator Genisys”.

“SAO is a massive pop-culture phenomenon from which we plan to launch a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live-action franchise extensions across our business verticals, beginning with television,” Skydance Media CEO Ellison said.

“We look forward to working alongside Laeta, Reki Kawahara and the teams at Kadokawa and Aniplex to build out a deeply immersive new universe of SAO in an authentic way that honors its well-established fan base around the globe.”

“Sword Art Online” follows a brilliant young beta tester Kirito and his group of friends alongside 10,000 other people, who are all trapped in a next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game. The game is a world unto itself: filled with sword fighting, monsters, magic and mystery, where the stakes are life and death. Kirito and an ensemble of diverse characters must fight their way through this hostile environment while making lives for themselves in this fantastical world.

8 actors who live double lives as DJs!

Most actors we know have a knack for singing; like Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Kristen Bell, Amanda Seyfried and more, but those are pretty common. We've seen plenty of actors who can sing, dance and act all at the same time – it pretty much comes in a package!

But apart from that, did you know that some actors actually have a talent for something even more unusual, like DJ-ing?

So, are you ready to learn which talented actors have the passion for spinning the decks?

Check out the eight of them below!

1.Idris Elba AKA DJ Big Driis

In the EDM world, Idris Elba is known as Big Driis the Londoner and has produced songs for several of his past films. Believe it or not, the 43-year-old actor actually started his music career first before going into acting. Though he became known through his acting, he never gave up on his music career. Elba so far has produced four EPs, one mixtape and one full studio album. He has also worked with various renowned musicians including Jay-Z, Mumford & Sons, K. Michelle, Noel Fielding and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

2.Elijah Wood AKA DJ Frodo

Although he is known for his high-profile leading role as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's epic film trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”, Elijah Wood is also a well-known DJ who performs together with his friend Zach Cowie under a DJ project called Wooden Wisdom. Due to his famous role in “The Lord of the Rings”, fans have been calling him DJ Frodo, even though the actor himself never admitted to calling himself that. The duo have played at various renowned music festivals like Coachella, Bushmills Live, Pre-Emmy parties and more.

3.Ansel Elgort AKA DJ Ansolo

Young heartthrob Ansel Elgort proves that he is more than just a talented actor as he is also good at spinning! Performing under the name Ansolo, the 22-year-old goes from being known as Caleb Prior in “The Divergent” series and Augustus Waters in “The Fault in Our Stars”, to an EDM household name. With support from huge EDM names like Nicky Romero, Martin Garrix, Afrojack and Steve Angello, Ansolo has already performed at two major music festivals; Electric Zoo Festival and Ultra Music Festival within two years of his music career.

4.Kristian Nairn AKA DJ Hodor

Like Elijah Wood, Kristian Nairn was given the name DJ Hodor by fans due to his portrayal of the character Hodor in the famous HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones”. Nairn is most known for his DJ set “Rave of Thrones” in which he samples sounds using his repetitive lines in the “Game of Thrones” series. The 40-year-old Irish DJ has performed in various countries around the world including Singapore, Philippines, Australia, England and more.

5.Michelle Rodriguez AKA DJ MRod

The “Fast & Furious” actress doesn’t have an official DJ name, but some people have been calling her DJ MRod, taken from her Instagram account. The 38-year-old actress certainly knows how to play her game and she has been DJ-ing at private parties as a hobby for quite some time now. She also has quite a reputation as a DJ as she previously played at important events like the Cannes Film Festival and Grand Prix.

6.Paris Hilton

Not only is she a successful businesswoman, socialite, television personality, model, actress, singer, and author – but also a DJ! Paris debuted her DJ career in 2012 thanks to DJ Afrojack whom she dated for a while back then. When she initially began her DJ career, she was heavily criticised by many mainstream DJs including ex-boyfriend Afrojack, Deadmau5 and Samantha Ronson, but now, Paris has become one of the highest-paid celebrity DJs, holding club residencies all over the world. Paris Hilton has no specific DJ name.

7.Danny Masterson AKA DJ Mom Jeans

While many of us may know him from his role as Steven Hyde from “That ‘70s Show”, Masterson had actually started DJ-ing as a hobby in the late 90s. The name DJ Mom Jeans was taken from “That ‘70s Show”, as Mila Kunis and Laura Prepon had to wear mom jeans regularly during the show and he would always make fun of them. Masterson is a regular DJ at the famous annual music festival, Lollapalooza.

8.Joe Jonas AKA DJ Danger

After parting ways from The Jonas Brothers, Joe Jonas is testing the waters in the EDM world and has now joined the celebrity DJ club. He started DJ-ing in 2013 as a joke but now is taking the job very seriously. Apart from being a rising DJ, Joe has also recently formed a new band called DNCE who have released their debut single “Cake by the Ocean” in 2015
