Congratulations are in order for Malaysia as the country’s team has won third place for the online game, FIFA Online 3 at the EA Champions Cup 2016 Summer!

EA Champions Cup 2016 Summer is an inter-Asian e-Sports match for FIFA Online 3, an online football game developed by EA Spearhead Studio.

The homegrown team of four who call themselves Malaysia Tigers became the second runner-up for FIFA Online 3 and won themselves a cash prize of USD30,000!

The champions cup was held in Shanghai, China on the 23 and 24 July 2016 at Expo Center, where eight teams representing seven countries – Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and two defending champion teams from China – competed against each other to win from a prize pool of USD300,000.

eSports like FIFA Online 3 and DOTA 2 are getting more and more prominent in Malaysia, especially since Malaysians are quite good at them too!

In 2013, a Malaysian team called Orange won third place at the International 2013 DOTA 2 Championship and received a cash prize of USD287,000.

Since then, the government has been very supportive of Malaysians participating in eSports tournaments.

How legit is the news? Well, Hotlink and Grab have collaborated to announce a promotion which will soon be available to all Pokemon trainers in Malaysia!

PokeMobile, a car which is equipped with an iPad and Pokemon charger that enables Pokémon trainers to go for Pokémon Go hunting has already been unveiled this morning, and it seems pretty legit!

“Yes, you can now go and catch ‘em all faster, thanks to our PokeMobile – a partnership between Hotlink and Grab!” read a statement on Hotlink site.

“Lucky trainers will enjoy FREE PokeMobile rides to their nearest PokeStop. The trainers of the day will also enjoy USD 100 worth of PokeCoins!”

There will be a total of four PokeMobiles, and these cars are all set to help trainers hunt around the Klang Valley for Pokémons.

Previously it was reported that Pokémon Go will finally be launched in Asia, and apparently, what they meant was only Hong Kong and Japan.

Also, while eight Asian countries including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines had servers, Malaysia was the only Asian country that had no server at all.

But that wasn’t the case anymore, because a server for the country has finally been listed on the mmoserverstatus.com, a site that monitors servers’ status for various popular MMO games.

Though the server is still inactive, several netizens claimed that the server was online for a while on Saturday before going off.

Though Niantic, makers of the game has yet to officially announce the release date, Malaysian fans are hopeful that they will be able to join in the craze soon.

Benjamin Kheng is the “Wonder Boy”

You may know Benjamin Kheng as the guitarist of Singapore's famous pop band The Sam Willows, but you're about to know him as an actor soon as he is about to make his film debut in a biopic titled "Wonder Boy".

The biographical film is based on the early years of popular Singaporean pop singer and composer, Dick Lee, who is best known as a Singapore Idol judge.

Kheng will have the honour of playing the younger self of Lee, an aspiring young musician who comes from a rich family and his coming-of-age journey of ambition, love and music.

"Dick, being such a household name in Singapore, there is so much you can find out from the Internet and from people," said Kheng as quoted by Channel News Asia.

"But this story isn't about that. It's about everything that is unseen. It's about a man trying to create a voice for himself," he continued.

This is not the first time Kheng plays the famous music personality. He previously played Lee in TheatreWorks' 2012 musical National Broadway Company and sung several of his famous songs for the production.

The biopic not only focuses on the 59-year-old singer, it will also be his directorial debut where he will co-direct along with Daniel Yam, who directed short films such as "Gift" (2013) and "Promise" (2014).

"Wonder Boy" also stars Constance Song, Julie Tan, Zachary Ibrahim, Ryan Ang and Chen Yi Xi, and is set to be released in cinemas in the third quarter of 2017.

Namewee to be arrested over new music video

Namewee has gotten himself into yet another serious trouble for releasing a music video that is said to have insulted various religions, including Islam.

Police will now arrest the 33-year-old Malaysian singer who is currently overseas as soon as he returns, as five reports have already been lodged against his latest music video, “Oh My God”.

“We will arrest him as soon as he returns to help in the investigations into the video clip recording,” said Penang Northeast District Police Chief Mior Farid Alatrash Wahid to The Star.

The music video which has already been taken down from YouTube also featured Taiwanese band 911 (玖壹壹) was shot at several places of worship in Penang including Masjid Terapung in Tanjung Bungah.

This has angered several NGOs in Penang as well as the public, as Namewee’s dancing and singing in the mosque is considered as insulting Islam.

After receiving a lot of criticism, Namewee uploaded yet another video titled “Uncle Lim” featuring Malaysian Nasyid singer Yasin Sulaiman.

The video was posted together with a statement where the singer denies that he has insulted Islam.

“Namewee is the first Chinese singer in history, to have sung a duet with a Nasyid singer. That is a fact that cannot be changed. World peace, religious harmony – that is the true intention of “Oh My God’,” Namewee said in a Facebook post.

“You can twist, you can curse, and you can threaten to kill me, that is your choice and I cannot stop you. But I believe that Allah, Jesus, and Buddha would not forbid me from singing and saying what I want. This is something only humans would do,” he continued.

Norway dance crew criticised for dancing at Batu Caves

An international dance crew is being condemned by some angry Malaysians for disrespecting the Hindu temple and culture.

The Quick Style, a trio of hip-hop dance crew from Oslo, Norway recently shot a music video at one of Malaysia’s famous tourist attractions, Batu Caves, featuring the country’s very own homegrown dancers from Astro Battleground Malaysia.

The video was posted on the crew’s official Facebook page on 28 July and has received generally positive feedback from the public as it managed to capture the beautiful and exotic scenery of Batu Caves, while at the same time, promoting the destination.

But when Malaysians begin to take notice of the video, some of them were quick to criticise the behaviour of the dancers which they labelled as ‘disrespectful and irresponsible’.

“Learn to respect a sacred place! Temple authorities must be shot dead for allowing this nonsense. The world has become a place where money and publicity can buy anything!” said one of the Facebook commenters.

Many of them were offended because the dancers were wearing shoes inside of the temple and it is an insult to the holy place.

Nevertheless, a number of Malaysians defended the dance drew who they say portrayed the Malaysian culture in a beautiful and artistic way.

The Quick Style consists of Suleman Malik, Bilal Malik and Nasir Sirikhan.

They are the winners of “Norway’s Got Talent” in 2009 and have been traveling throughout the world teaching and performing for big events and stages.

The name ‘Quick Style’ is derived from how the group combines different urban dance styles in harmony with all types of music, and perform it in sync with each other.

The music video has garnered over 593 thousand views, 9 thousand likes and 7 thousand shares on Facebook.

Yuna: The parody could end my career in the States!

A Malaysian entertainment show called “MeleTOP” has been criticised for posting a parody video of Malaysian songstress Yuna and American R&B artiste Usher recently.

The video features comedians Jihan Muse as Yuna and Shuk SYJ as Usher, as they parodied Yuna’s song “Crush” and the supposed issue where Yuna hugged Usheron stage two weeks ago in Philadelphia.

So why is everyone – including Yuna – so mad at the parody video?

Apparently, Shuk SYJ painted his face black to portray himself as Usher, who as we know and love is of African American descent.

This is known as Blackface, and refers to when a non-black performer paints his face a darker colour to play a black role.

This was a practise done decades ago and was used in typically comedic or musical shows in America, but has since been ruled as being racist and offensive towards the black community.

Yuna took to Facebook and expressed her anger regarding the parody video as it could jeopardise her career in the States. In her long and lengthy post she called the video disrespectful and stupid and said that 50 percent of those attending her shows are African Americans.

Her Facebook post has since been removed.

The show had formally issued an apology to the local singer and removed the video.
