Most unconventional Chinese New Year songs

$

Chinese New Year is around the corner, and it is almost time for us to officially welcome the year of the Rooster!

Also known as the Lunar New Year, it is a festival celebrated in Asian countries and territories with significant Chinese populations like Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia!

Around this time of the year, you will start to see streets and malls decorated in red or yellow, and everywhere you go, Chinese New Year songs will be playing to bring forth the festive mood.

Speaking of Chinese New Year songs, we know that there are plenty of lovable classics that have been around for years, and every year, many new and modern ones turn up with the intention to become as iconic as the classics, and we have to admit, some of them are pretty unique.

So, in celebration of the Chinese New Year 2017, which the modern Chinese now refer to as the Spring Festival, we list down seven of the most unconventional CNY songs you’ve ever heard!

Meet Malaysian a capella group, Colour of Voices who decided to give classic Chinese New Year songs a truly modern twist with their amazing a capella medley. The group is one of the first music groups to give CNY songs an a capella treatment, thanks to the influence of “Pitch Perfect” and famous a capella group, Pentatonix.

Made up of five guys who are not very fluent in Mandarin Chinese language except for two members – Jeffery who is a Chinese himself and Jaswan who had previously learned the language, this was the group’s first attempt at a full Chinese language song. Days after posting the video on social media, it went viral and immediately catapulted the group into mainstream media attention.

After their first attempt, the group decided to experience with something slightly different from their first medley by creating another CNY medley – but this time in Cantonese Chinese language.

Namewee

Multi-talented singer-songwriter and filmmaker Namewee has released a couple of Chinese New Year songs over the course of his music career, but the one that stands out the most is definitely his 2010 CNY song featuring fellow Malaysian singer, Bao.

The song started out like every other typical Chinese New Year song with a man clad in red, singing at a wide Chinese temple featuring the sound of traditional Chinese instruments like flutes, pipes, gong, and also some silk instruments. Everything started out normal until Namewee appeared and started to ruin the tempo of the song by bringing in some rap music.

The song is famous due to the funny lyrics which resonated very much with the Malaysian. Seven years later, Namewee collaborated with Bao once again for another brand new CNY song, which features lyrics with underlying meaning that pokes fun at the Malaysian politics.

Another odd entry of CNY song is performed by online supergroup RED People, also an artiste management company founded by Namewee. Though the song is certainly different than all the other typical Chinese New Year songs, it has been heavily condemned on social media for not having CNY vibes or values.

The song is performed in EDM style featuring a mix of hip hop and disco beats, and the whole set up of the song is very much a nod to the K-Pop trend. Many media dubbed the song as the worst CNY song of the year, having four times more dislikes than likes on YouTube.

OWL International

This Chinese New Year advertisement which is produced by Singapore-based instant F&B company, features Singaporean rapper BunZ. The commercial was an instant hit among Singaporeans as it accurately portrays the troubles faced by modern Singaporeans during Chinese New Year, while at the same time, highlighting the importance of family bonding and love.

The commercial receives a lot of praises for its humorous lyrics which is a mash of English, Mandarin Chinese and Hokkien languages, and the song is presented in rap music. However, several users also commented that the song has similar format to Namewee’s 2010 CNY song, though the focus and message of both songs are utterly different.

Fung Brothers ft Jason Chu

Chinese-American duo The Fung Brothers breaks tradition for being the first to sing a Chinese New Year song in English – and they did it with swag! Featuring rapper Jason Chu, brothers Andrew and David ring in the New Year with a hip hop track, explaining what the holiday is all about.

Directed by Jon Liu Pierce, the song sings about the various cultural traditions that are practiced during Chinese New Year, such as wearing red, giving away red envelopes, lion dance  and having reunion dinner.

Director Jon M. Chu is currently looking for an-all Asian cast to star in the Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming film, “Crazy Rich Asians”.

The film is based on the worldwide best-selling novel of the same name by Singapore-born author Kevin Kwan, and it is one of the very few all-Asian cast films by an American studio.

The director of “Now You See Me 2” made the announcement on Warner Bros Pictures’ Facebook page and revealed that the filming of the movie will start in April 2017.

“It is a great opportunity to showcase the most talented Asian actors out there. We start filming in April, and I know how much undiscovered talent there is in the world,” Chu said in the video.

“So we are shouting out to all you aspiring actors and cool personality with hidden talents to post a two-minute video on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube with the hashtag #CrazyRichAsiansCasting for a chance to be on our film.”

The casting is open to all Asians from around the world be it China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand or even the States, as they will need someone ‘Chinese-Singaporean or Asian’ as stated on their website.

“This is not a contest. You don’t get a prize. You can actually get a job,” he continued.

“We may not find anybody that fits or we may find the next big star. We really just want to open up the process because we know how hard it is to get in the door of a movie, especially for all-Asian characters of different shapes, sizes and talents.”

To audition for the movie, participants need to submit a less than two-minute video from now onwards until 10 February 2017, share it on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, with the hashtag #CrazyRichAsiansCasting, and set your privacy setting to public.

The video must be in the English language and participants must be aged 18 and above.

Swearing, nudity or obscene material is not allowed in the video and do not include any music in the video submission too.

For more information on the movie’s audition, visit crazyrichasiansmovie.net.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is about history professor Nick Young who invites his girlfriend Rachel Chu to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding. What Rachel didn’t realise is that Nick is actually the heir of an extremely wealthy Singapore family, and is viewed as the country’s most eligible bachelor.

See the beautiful Southeast Asian national costumes for Miss Universe 2016!

One of the most important beauty pageants in the world will soon be held in the Philippines at the end of this month, and everyone is getting really excited about it!

Over the years, we have seen some pretty crazy national costumes at the pageant, and nothing seems to be surprising anymore!

There was the rickshaw costume from Thailand, Optimus Prime suit from America, Canada’s ice rink queen, a windmill suit from Netherlands, and Czech Republic’s giant burrito!

This year, many countries have decided to up their game with more unique costumes that are completely out of the ordinary, and Southeast Asia doesn’t plan on losing in that department either!

Some countries in Southeast Asia have already unveiled their national costumes which will represent them at the world stage – and we have to say, most of them are really extraordinary!

Could we have the potential winner below? Check em’ out!

Malaysia – Kiran Jassal

Unlike the previous national costume, Malaysia has decided to move away from using traditional elements by going for a more futuristic and modern look with the Twin Towers national costume. The costume was inspired by the country’s iconic skyscraper, the Petronas Twin Towers, and was designed by local fashion powerhouse duo Rizman Ruzaini. Though the costume received mixed reactions from the Malaysian audience, it is certainly a step up and a bold change from the country's usual fare.

Indonesia – Kezia Warouw

Indonesia has once won the Best National Costume title at Miss Universe 2014 via Elvira Devinamira, and it looks like this year, Indonesia plans to take the crown once again with its grand Garuda costume called “Unity in Diversity”, inspired by the country’s national philosophy. Designed by Dynand Fariz, the awesome costume certainly makes the Indonesian candidate look like a glamorous comic book superhero who is ready to kick some butt!

Thailand – Chalita Suansane

After winning Best National Costume last year with its bizarre “tuk tuk” outfit, Thailand has set its sights for a winning streak with their majestic national costume called, “Jewel of Thailand”, inspired from the vintage photos of Queen Sirikit. It aims to showcase the richness of Thailand’s costume through the medium of jewellery. The exquisite ensemble is designed by culture scholar Hirankrit Pattaraboriboonkul, who was also the designer of 2015 Miss Universe Thailand's tuk tuk dress.

Myanmar – Htet Htet Htun

Another unique entry to the national costume segment is from Myanmar with its marionette-inspired costume. Designed by Gam Htoi Lazing, the country’s representative will be dressing herself as a puppet princess complete with strings and a light fibre frame on her shoulders. Since Burmese marionette puppetry is already considered a dying art, the national costume aims to highlight the traditional Myanmar puppet theatre in hopes of keeping the Burmese art and culture alive for future generations.

Singapore – Cheryl Chou

Designed by Moe Kasim, owner of the costume boutique Moephosis Concepts, Singapore will be showcasing its Peranakan culture through its national costume. The costume consists of a mixture of Malay and Chinese elements such as the kebaya dress, the traditional bridal headdress shaped like a pagoda featuring Chinese-lantern inspired baubles, and the Peranakan phoenix collar turned into peacock-like back piece.

Vietnam – Đặng Thị Lệ Hằng

While some countries struggle to make one really good national costume, Vietnam effortlessly created five for fans to pick and vote from! Each costume features Vietnamese unique culture and elements, and they all stand out in their very own way. Based on the votes on their Facebook page, the costume which is receiving the most positive reaction is the middle one, so it is likely to be the one that will be worn by Miss Vietnam at the upcoming beauty pageant.

The 65th Miss Universe pageant will take place at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, Metro Manila on 30 January 2017.

Stay tuned to TheHive.Asia for the winner announcement and more!

The sensational bubble tea Chatime will soon be rebranded after franchisor La Kaffa International of Taiwan has decided to prematurely terminate its partnership with Master franchisee for Malaysia, Loob Holding Sdn Bhd.

In a statement obtained by The Star, CEO of Loob Holding Sdn Bhd Bryan Loo said that the company is now in the process of creating its own brand for its 165 outlets.

“We have the same team, the same people, both employees and partners, in place at the same outlets. We expect consumers to find that we now have a different name,” said Loo.

“We will surely come up with something better. Loob Holding has 10 brands, including this Taiwanese brand which we have built from scratch in Malaysia.”

The management is currently working closely with sub-franchisees, outlet supervisory staff, frontline workers, partners and associates, and the pace would "intensify in the coming weeks".

Despite having 24 years to go before its official termination, La Kaffa prematurely ended the contract on 6 January at a press conference, and in accordance with the franchise agreement, all the current outlets would cease using the Chatime branding only after 45 days.

It had been reported that La Kaffa would officially take over the Malaysian Chatime business operation and development, but Loo has clarified that Loob Holding and its sub-franchisees are still operating all 165 outlets.

“The welfare and livelihood of the entire 1,000 team members are always close to our heart,” Loo said, regarding the sudden termination.

“In fact, we are declaring an average of two months bonus this year for all employees for this Chinese New Year and giving ang pows to all frontline service staff.”

Cambodian duo Kmeng Khmer talks “Jailbreak” OST

“Jailbreak” is going to be released in cinemas this 31 January. Some of you may have even already seen the action movie during its gala premiere and advance screening last weekend. When watching the movie, one of the things that really stands out is its official soundtrack.

Also titled “Jailbreak”, the cool-sounding music that blends traditional with modern is the work of two talented Cambodian entertainers that go by the name Kmeng Khmer.

Consisting of rapper Koa Punleur and singer Chea Socheat, the popular duo is known for songs such as “My Way”, “Love Diary” and “Heartbroken”.

JaiKon recently had the chance to sit down with Kmeng Khmer and ask them about their experience on not only working on the OST – but also acting in the action-packed movie!

The duo appears in the movie directed by Jimmy Henderson alongside French-Cambodian action star Jean-Paul Ly, Bokator fighter Dara Our, MMA fighter Tharoth Sam, actor Savin Phillip, actress Celine Tran and Prince Sisowath Siriwudd.

Let’s find out what Kmeng Khmer has to say about “Jailbreak”:

Kmeng Khmer’s music video for the “Jailbreak” OST [Watch it here].

JaiKon: How did you guys get involved in producing the OST for “Jailbreak”?

Socheat:We had our album launching last year and Loy [“Jailbreak” producer] came to see us then. He liked our music so he told us about the film he was making. He asked us if we were interested in working on it too.

After Loy met us, he contacted our manager, Baramey Production. We made a deal to make an OST for “Jailbreak”. The concept and everything is from Loy and Jimmy [“Jailbreak” director].

Punleur: Then we worked on the song with Morm Picherith, he’s our music producer. Socheat and I were responsible for the lyrics and rap parts. We each wrote our own parts in the song.

Did you watch the movie or snippets of it before coming up with the song? What was your inspiration for it?

Punleur: We didn’t watch it first.

Socheat: We made the song before the movie started shooting. We went and trained every day with the stunt team to get our inspiration from the fighting scenes.

Punleur: And Loy told us the concept of the story, gave his idea for the song.

How long did you take to complete the song?

Socheat: We spent nearly two months to make the song. We didn’t send them the draft. When we finished the whole structure, the whole sample draft, only then did we send it to them.

They didn’t have any problems with the song or ask for any changes to be made?

Punleur: Very little needed to be changed. Loy did ask us about the lyrics because it was hard to understand the meaning, both in Khmer and English, so we had to explain only that.

Kmeng Khmer likes their characters in “Jailbreak”.

How has the reception been for the “Jailbreak” OST?

Socheat: When we released the audio on our YouTube channel, a lot of people were asking us about it – what does this song mean, what is it for. We said: Keep calm, wait for the video [laughs]. Then the music video was released a few days ago and everyone was impressed by it.

The music video was also filmed on the “Jailbreak” set?

Socheat: Yeah. We filmed it on the movie set. We had D-Man dance crew, the original choreo dancer in Cambodia who always collaborates with us in our performances and videos, working with us in it too.

So Kmeng Khmer also appears in the movie, right? Does this mean we will be seeing more of you on the big screen?

Punleur: This is the first movie ever for Kmeng Khmer. Maybe we will be back for more but we’re not sure. Most filmmakers in Cambodia don’t really understand Kmeng Khmer. We have rejected a lot of acting offers.

Socheat: They want Kmeng Khmer to be the main character of the movie, but the movie is just funny or crazy. They try to change our personalities. It’s not us. Our characters in “Jailbreak” are us, the real us.

Catch both “Jailbreak” the movie and the OST in Cambodian cinemas this 31 January!

“Jailbreak” stars aim to promote Khmer martial art, Bokator

Non-stop action is what “Jailbreak” is all about. Martial arts enthusiasts should be well aware of the fighting techniques used in the movie, which consist largely of Khmer martial art, Bokator.

Two of the movie’s main cast, Dara Our and Tharoth Sam, are no strangers to the fighting style, which can be easily identified by the sharp movements that include elbow and knee strikes as well as ground fighting.

While outside of Cambodia, Bokator has a relatively smaller recognition compared to other forms of martial arts, there still exist gyms in countries such as France, the UK, Iran, Ireland and Australia that practices it.

The instructors are either representatives sent from the countries to learn and bring back the knowledge of the ancient martial art to their lands, or Cambodians who fled the Khmer Rouge and are now teaching Bokator abroad.

Ancient it may be, it is being revived by the current generation and is gaining more popularity, partly thanks to active supporters such as Dara and Tharoth themselves. Both are well-versed in Bokator, trained by grandmaster San Kim Sean.

Tharoth admits that she would talk about Bokator every chance she gets in interviews, especially to encourage more girls to learn it, not just as self-defense but also for the preservation of the Cambodian culture. Learning it was no easy feat, even for the MMA fighter. She gave up for a year before returning to practice it until now.

Dara comes from a martial arts background as even his great grandfather is a Bokator master. His interest for martial arts grew when he was 15 but at the time, he didn’t have the chance to practice it. He learnt Karate and only occasionally trained with his father and grandfather. He finally had the chance to sharpen his Bokator skills after training under the grandmaster.

The duo gets to show off their Bokator skills in the upcoming “Jailbreak”, the movie directed by Cambodian-based Italian director Jimmy Henderson, which also stars French-Cambodian action star Jean-Paul Ly, actors Savin Phillip, Sisowath Siriwudd, Sok Visal and Dara Phang, and actress Celine Tran.

Dara and Tharoth recently attended the cast and crew screening for “Jailbreak” and JaiKon was there to catch up with the two to talk more about the movie. The duo shared their experiences working with Jean-Paul Ly, working with Hollywood star Angelina Jolie (for Tharoth) and their passion for Bokator.

Tharoth and Dara being interviewed before “Jailbreak” gala premiere.

JaiKon: You have just watched your movie “Jailbreak”, how does it feel like watching it on the big screen for the first time?

Tharoth: I feel happy and super excited to see the movie onscreen. I feel overwhelmed. I really like the movie and appreciate all the effort the team, cast and crew, put together. We all worked really hard, from morning till midnight. For all the hard work we’ve been doing, now we can finally see the result.

Dara: When we were watching the movie, I feel so proud of our team because we worked hard together. [We started training] three months before shooting started. For the other departments, like script writing, they started one or two years ago. For our team, stunt team and cast, we worked hard designing the stunt choreography before shooting. Then on set, we worked hard again, sometimes we got injured but we still tried to finish on time. When we watched the movie, we felt amazed by the result and really miss the good memories together when we were shooting.

Tell us a bit about the characters you play in the movie.

Tharoth: My character in the movie is like me in real life. The director and producer said, “Well yeah, we’ll use you as you”. They wanted someone that feels confident and brave and doesn’t need help from any guy, can do work and fight like guys. That’s how I am. In the movie, I’m one of the police, in the same team as Jean-Paul Ly and Dara.

Dara: My character in this movie is in the special force, like she said. In the movie, I don’t like people who want to control me. I like to decide for myself. That’s why in the beginning of the movie, I didn’t communicate well with Inspector Ly (Jean-Paul). But after we got to know each other better, we started working together to survive.

Working with Jean-Paul Ly, how was that like?

Dara: He’s nice. He’s flexible. When he works on Hollywood productions, they have good accommodation. In Cambodia, it’s not the same as Hollywood. But he enjoyed working with us, he can work like the local people.

Tharoth: When he came here, I was like, “how could we communicate with him?” But actually he’s really like a family. When we started training together, we became closer like family, like brothers and sisters. He’s really polite, humble and a nice guy. He always thinks about the team. Every time we were shooting, he always cared about safety. He’s very professional.

Tharoth, you also acted in the Netflix movie “First They Killed My Father”, what is your character there and how was it like working with Angelina Jolie?

Tharoth: The role is so mean. I have to be part of the Khmer Rouge. I had to be so mean and teach the kids how to be strong and fight the enemies. It was so hard because I’m not mean in real life but in character, I had to be yelling all the time.

I was so excited to be working with Angelina Jolie. After I performed, she looked at the monitor, at how I fought, how I acted. She gave me a thumbs-up and said I was a wonderful woman. I never forgot her praise, I even wrote down what she said to me. The movie will premiere on 18 February. I’ll be going to the premiere if I’m not busy.

You had to use your Bokator skills in it too, just like in “Jailbreak”, looks like the influence of Bokator is definitely spreading?

Tharoth: We’re the young generation who represents the Khmer martial arts. Dara and I are both in the Cambodian Bokator Federation.

Dara: For Bokator, the people in Cambodia, they know what it is. But for the people outside of Cambodia, they don’t know that Cambodians have our own martial arts. People know about Angkor Wat but they don’t know what art is represented at Angkor Wat. On the walls at Angkor Wat, there are sculptures, showing techniques of martial arts on the walls. So that is Bokator. It’s really traditional, our Khmer people created the art for this country. Now, there’s no more war so we train for our health and to preserve our culture.

Will we be seeing more of Bokator in movies?

Dara: We transformed the martial art to become art for movie. For martial arts in movie, we see Muay Thai, Kung Fu and many other martial arts but for now what is Bokator, where is it from, it’s new for the people around the world. We want them to know more about Bokator.
