A new music platform to SKOWT raw talents

$
0
0

With so many raw talents that go undiscovered, a new music platform has been created to scout independent talents and new artistes and give them the exposure they deserve.

SKOWT, which is also available as a phone application was recently launched to help unsigned artists showcase their talent.

By uploading their songs and biography online, the platform will give them the opportunity to connect with streaming music fans, other artistes, licensing managers and event organisers.

The platform is free to use and open to all independent artistes or unsigned bands, regardless of their genre, language or location. The only requirement is that the artiste registering to use the platform has to be independent from any record labels.

“Our goal is to help unsigned artists get their music out there - to a worldwide audience and to the people that matter in the music industry,” explained a representative of SKOWT.

“We chose to make SKOWT a one-stop platform for uploading, listening and finding new music. With our platform, independent artists can be recognised for their talent, build a fan base and potentially sign a commercial deal with recording labels or media companies. Music fans can stream new music for free and talent managers can easily discover new talent. We are so proud of this platform and can’t wait to watch it become a part of the music industry.”

Music on SKOWT is uploaded by unsigned artists from a wide range of genres. Listeners will then have the chance to like or dislike songs and build playlists.

Based on the songs with the most likes and listens, SKOWT will build a Top 10 chart that features the most popular songs of the past week.

SKOWT also recently announced their partnership with Warner Music Malaysia to identify and recommend new talents to the label.

“As we continue to scour the borderless world of finding music talents, I am thrilled to be working with SKOWT.IT. I agreed to work with them because the enthusiasm shown by Jheeva, the brain behind SKOWT is infectious coupled by my admiration for his relentless and strategic pursuit in tapping into one of the hotbeds of new talent pool, which is in Asia – the sky's the limit,” said Managing Director of Warner Music Malaysia, Darren Choy.

SKOWT app is available on both iOS and Android.

Tamagotchi and other awesome 90s toys that we miss!

For its 20th anniversary, toy maker Bandai is re-releasing its iconic 90s gadget that became the hit go-to fad in the school playground back then – yes, we’re talking about Tamagotchi, the handheld digital pet, which was one of the biggest toy fads of the 1990s and early 2000s.

However, there are catches. The re-release will be just slightly smaller than the 90s version, and it's only being released in Japan for JPY1,900 yen (USD22).

The popular egg-shaped device is available in six of its original colours, featuring the six original characters.

Released in 1996, the Tamagotchi game begins with an egg hatching into a character that players must look after through tasks like feeding it and cleaning up its droppings. Also, it will die if the tasks are neglected – how dramatic!

Do you remember some other nostalgic toys that were the craze in the 80s and 90s?

Here are some that we remember.

First introduced in Japan, capsule hotel also known as pod hotel, is a type of hotel that simplifies the average hotel experience to the very basics of what we need – a small room with space for people to rest.

So if you’re a minimalist who would like a good night's rest at rock-bottom prices, then a capsule hotel is the dream.

What’s more, today’s capsule hotels are sleek, stylish, and have all kinds of extras, slotted into the tiny spaces, just so you have more than you really need.

Get ready to fawn over the brand new cast of F4 as Taiwanese hit series “Meteor Garden” (流星花园) is set for a remake sixteen years after its first premiered!

The news was announced by Angie Chai, the original producer of the 2001 series, on her Weibo, shortly after Barbie Hsu, the lead actress who portrayed Shan Chai in the original series – teased fans of a possible remake by posting a “Meteor Garden” poster with the caption, “Are you excited?”

A post shared by @barbie.hsu on

Hsu also posted a few other throwback posts of the series including a photo with her co-stars Jerry Yan, Van Ness Wu, Vic Chou and Ken Chu – collectively known as F4, and the opening song of “Meteor Garden”.

According to the Straits Times, there will be a total of 48 episodes and each of them will cost TWD15 million, 30 times bigger in budget than the 2001 version, with a total cost of over TWD720 million.

Slated to premiere in 2018, the reboot will be a fuller – and flashier – adaptation of the books.

Based on popular Japanese manga “Boys Over Flowers” (Hana Yori Dango) by Yoko Kamio, the show was responsible of launching Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Ken Chu and Van Ness Wu to superstardom as the group F4 across Asia.

The manga has also been adapted into a 51-episode anime series, and a live-action television drama series in both Japan and Korea.

“Boys Over Flowers” is currently the best-selling shoujo manga of all time, having sold 61 million copies as of 2015.

Try out Tino’s Pizza Café’s new durian pizza!

Durian lovers, you are in for a treat as Tino’s Pizza Café in Singapore is offering a new exotic dish to its menu – durian pizza!

The café which offers authentic Italian food introduced its new unique pizza on 1 April 2017 – which everyone thought was a joke at first, but turns out to be the real deal.

There are two durian pizza flavours to choose from; the Mao Shan Wang which is at SGD21.90 and the D24 which costs SGD16.90.

Though the combination of this Italian dish and the exotic king of fruits may seems weird to many, Tino’s Pizza Café is certainly not first to sell this pungent concoction.

Singapore’s Godfather Pizza, Sarawak’s 900 Inn Café, China’s Blue and Brown (which has recently closed down) and Pizza Hut also offer the same dish.

Also, back in 2015, Pizza Hut Malaysia tried to conceptualised the same idea but it never happen in the end.

The durian pizza may not appeal to everyone but for those who are gastronomically adventurous, this might be something worth trying.

British indie pop band Bastille is set to return to Singapore for the third time consecutively.

The four-member band first visited the country for a concert at The Coliseum in 2015 and they were also one of the performers at the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix.

Marking their third visit, the band will be returning to Singapore for their second headlining concert this August to promote their sophomore album, “Wild World”.

The band initially started as a solo project by lead vocalist Dan Smith, but later expanded to include keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist Will Farquarson, and drummer Chris Wood.

Their name derives from Bastille Day (AKA the French National Day), which is celebrated on 14 July, the date of Smith's birthday.

Debuted in 2010, the band achieved mainstream success in 2013 after releasing the song “Pompeii” which was positively reviewed by critics, reaching number two in the United Kingdom and number five in the U.S.

The song is featured in “First Touch” game, “First Touch Soccer 15”, “Pro Evolution Soccer 2015”, and the 2014 movie, “Mr. Peabody and Sherman”.

Don’t be fooled. This clear water is actually coffee!

Many may like their coffee black, but no one would want their teeth to be so, which is why two Slovakian brothers and coffee addicts have invented the CLR CFF a.k.a. Clear Coffee, to save the coffee-stained teeth of coffee lovers around the globe!

While brothers David and Adam Nagy refuse to say how they removed the colouring from the beverage, they promise that the new clear drink definitely won’t leave a stain on your pearl white teeth!

“This refreshing beverage is made from high quality Arabica coffee beans and pure water. It is produced by methods which have never been used before. Due to this combination of technology and high quality ingredients a drink has been developed which is unique in taste and flavour,” read a statement on the company’s official page.

Pitched as the world’s first colourless coffee drink, each bottle of CLR CFF is made with 27g of Arabica coffee and water, and according to the company, the coffee is free of preservatives, artificial flavours, sweeteners, and is only four calories – perfect for those who are health conscious.

The beverage looks just like plain water but according to some tasters from U.K., the drink is “odd but not unpleasant. In fact, it’s very drinkable.”

CLR CFF is currently only available at selected retail shelves in the U.K., but the company also ships their product to the U.S. via their website.

The coffee drink will be sold at GBP5.99 for two 200ml bottles or GBP14.99 for a pack of five.

Former Spice Girl member Victoria Beckham has been awarded the prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) honour by the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William at Buckingham Palace.

The honour is given to recognise her 17-year career in the fashion industry as well as her many philanthropy ventures.

After the Spice Girls split, the Posh Spice had focused on her fashion business and went on to become an internationally recognised style icon and fashion designer.

Wearing a sophisticated navy blue ankle-length long-sleeve dress from her own collection, the 43-year-old mother of four was accompanied to the palace by her parents and husband, David Beckham, who was bestowed with the same title 13 years ago.

On being given the title, Victoria said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be at Buckingham Palace today. I'm proud to be British, honoured and humbled to receive my OBE from the Duke of Cambridge. If you dream big and work hard you can accomplish great things.”

“I'm so happy to share this very special occasion with my parents and husband; without their love and support, none of this would be possible,” she said as quoted by BBC.

A&W root beer is now known as just “RB”

After the shenanigans that’s been going on with Malaysia’s Auntie Anne’s “pretzel dog”, that is now known as “pretzel sausage”, Malaysia’s A&W chain has been taking a cautious step by changing its famous “root beer” to just “RB” in order to secure itself the halal status.

According to Bernama, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said that JAKIM will not issue a halal certification for “non-alcoholic beer” or any product using haram words like “ham” or “bacon” to avoid confusion among Muslim consumers.

Auntie Anne's Pretzel Sausage.

Hence, each application for Malaysian halal certification must follow the usual procedure for the Malaysia Halal Certification (MPPHM), which is used by JAKIM, or fatwa decisions and related rules used in the halal certification.

Thus, this explains why A&W Malaysia has switched the name of its “root beer” to “RB” to get the halal certification for all its outlets.

But of course, the whole change doesn’t sit well with Malaysians who took to social media to express their dissatisfaction.

Apart from that, it has been noted that A&W root beer has also been rebranded as “sarsaparilla” when sold in bottles and cans at the supermarket or kiosks, again – to avoid confusion among Halal-conscious customers.

(Photo sources: Hamidi Izwan's FB and Gordon Ck Lim's FB)

But now, we think it’s more confusing since the same drink now has different names when sold inside and outside of A&W.

7 charming Tokyo neighbourhoods to visit

$
0
0

Tokyo counts as one of our favourite travel destinations here, and the first things that come to mind are the wonderful shopping and delicious Japanese cuisine. Just as iconic are famous Tokyo neighbourhoods such as Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya and Ginza.

Japan’s capital city, however, is much more than those popular tourist spots. We’ve identified some of our favourites, leaving out those that most travellers have heard of.

Shimokitazawa

One of the most up-and-coming neighbourhoods in Tokyo, Shimokitazawa is currently one of the hotspots for youth in Tokyo – it’s both happening and laid back at the same time. Comprising numerous cafés and hipster shops selling unique fashion, walking through its streets reminds one of the more famous and popular Harajuku. However, Shimokitazawa is our preferred destination due to its charming narrow streets and artistic vibe.

Keeping up to its image as a centre for the arts, music and theatre performances and are also a mainstay in this neighbourhood located in Western Tokyo.

Kichijoji

Kichijoji is a big hit with the locals, and has a reputation as one of the most desirable residential neighbourhoods in Tokyo. One of the highlights of Kichijoji is the beautiful Inokashira Park, which is an ideal spot for viewing cherry blossoms in Spring. The body of water here is also the source for the Kanda River.

The shopping scene in Kichijoji is always bustling, and there are many shops worth exploring in the streets around the main sheltered area next to the train station. Visit on a weekend and you’ll spot many Japanese youths hanging out in this hip neighbourhood.

With a quaint park at one end of the district, and a bustling shopping scene at the other, Kichijoji is great for both kicking back and doing some serious shopping.

Tsukishima

Talking about quaint Tokyo neighbourhoods, if you prefer somewhere quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, then Tsukishima might be the place for you. Time seems to slow down in Tsukishima, a reclaimed island just outside of the main Tokyo city centre.

With a blend of old world traditions and modern skyscrapers, visitors to Tsukishima can slow down from the normally fast-paced Tokyo lifestyle, and slowly unwind.

If that isn’t good enough for you, Tsukishima is also the birthplace of the legendary Tokyo dish – monjayaki, finely cut ingredients pan-fried in a light batter.  It’s pretty similar to okonomiyaki. Having a meal here is reason enough to visit this island neighbourhood.

Odaiba

On to another island neighbourhood – Odaiba, a man-made island in Tokyo Bay.

Fronted by an iconic view of the Rainbow Bridge linking it to mainland Tokyo, Odaiba is a popular shopping and sightseeing neighbourhood, well loved by locals and tourists alike. Offering an unparalleled view of the Tokyo waterfront, Odaiba also holds one of only two beaches located in urban Tokyo.

The other distinct landmark in Odaiba is Daikanransha, a 115-metre tall ferris wheel that was the world’s tallest when opened in 1999.

Onsen lovers can check out Oedo Onsen Monotagari Hot Springs here as well, it’s one of the more famous onsens in Tokyo. Other attractions include the distinctively designed Fuji Television building, Miraikan (Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation), a replica of the Statue of Liberty and much more.

Ebisu

Named after the legendary Japanese beer, Yebisu, this stylish neighbourhood is only a couple of stops from central Shibuya, without the crowds and chaos.

One of the most expensive neighbourhoods to live in Tokyo, Ebisu, along with neighbouring Daikanyama, is known for its trendy boutiques and cafés. Whether you love chilling out in parks, shopping at fashion forward boutiques or having pastries over afternoon tea, Ebisu would be an ideal district for you.

Yebisu Garden Place, formerly a beer brewery, is also worth checking out

A common misconception is that Yebisu Beer (one of the most, if not the most delicious beer in Japan) was named after this neighbourhood. In fact, it’s actually the other way around. Speaking of which, do check out the Museum of Yebisu Beer while you’re there. People-watching over a refreshing mug of Yebisu draught beer is one of the best around. Other notable Sapporo Breweries in the area includes the Beer Museum Yebisu and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

Nakameguro

Nakameguro is the hippest neighbourhood in Meguro, and one of the most stylish in all of Tokyo. The neighbourhood has a distinct European feel to it, and is known to be a centre for fashion, art, culture, and of course, food.

Nakameguro’s laid-back and European atmosphere sits well with us, and we really enjoyed the trendy boutiques, cafés and galleries. Vintage fashion and furniture lovers will go absolutely crazy over here, with Nakameguro’s wide selection of vintage wares on sale.

Visit during cherry blossom season and you’ll get to not only admire the beautiful scenery, but also enjoy the festivities in the area, with food stalls lining the streets during this period.

Azabu Juban

Located and near the bright lights vibrant district of Roppongi, Azabu Juban is on the contrary, a quiet low-key neighbourhood of Tokyo. This slow-pace enclave boasts trendy cafes and fashionable boutiques as well as century old establishments and shops.

This meeting of old and new gives Azabu Juban an eclectic vibe that is popular with youths and tourists. If you are in the area, don’t forget to make a pit stop at Abe-chan, a super popular yakitori place that’s been around for decades. The restaurant has a pot of sauce at the front of the shop has been around for 70 years! Other places include Naniwaya Souhonten for its Japanese ‘Taiyaki’ pancake with sweet red bean filling and Tanuki Senbei, a shop selling fresh rice crackers since 1928.

Foo Fighters to return to Bangkok after 21 years!

$

Over the weekend, Thai event organiser Godzillionaire posted the poster of Japan’s Summer Sonic 2017, hinting fans that one of the artistes performing at the festival will be coming to Thailand.

Now, it has been confirmed that the said performer is none other than the headlining act themselves – the legendary American rock band Foo Fighters!

By end of May, the rock band will be kicking off their 2017 tour in America and Europe with Japan being the only Asian date in the line-up, but now it seems that Bangkok will be their second Asian stop as well as the first Southeast Asian location that will be included in the tour.

Though no dates has been announced yet, (it is however expected to be right after Summer Sonic in August) it has been confirmed by the organiser that the Seattle rock band will indeed perform in Bangkok, marking their return to the country after 21 years.

According to Asia Live 365, Foo Fighters first performed in Bangkok in 1996 at the MTV Alternative Nation concert alongside the 80s bands Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth, which both now had already disbanded.

With Bangkok being the first Southeast Asian country announced for the tour, let’s hope that other Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia will be announced soon too!

As we wait for more updates from the organiser, here are some classic tunes from Foo Fighters.

Earlier this month, we announced that Maryland punk rock band All Time Low is set to hit Southeast Asia this August with a headlining concert in Manila.

Recently, the band has added Singapore to be part of their “Young Renegades Tour”, which is in support of their latest and seventh album “Last Young Renegade” set to be released in June 2017.

When Manila was first announced as the band first Southeast Asian tour date,  it was already expected that Singapore will be included as well since their last two gigs in the country – 2011 and 2013 – were both immensely successful with sold-out tickets.

Marking their third visit in Singapore, the show will be held on 17 August 2017 at The Coliseum with tickets priced at SGD128.

The tickets will go on sale on 2 May 2017 via asiaboxoffice.com.
