English singer-songwriter and model of Albanian descent, Dua Lipa will be performing her first ever acoustic showcase in Singapore this May.

The 21-year-old started her musical career at the age of 14, covering songs by famous pop artistes such as Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado on YouTube.

She was signed with Warner Bros Records in 2015 and released her first single “New Love” in August, followed by her second single “Be the One” in October, which entered the UK Singles Chart for the first time, peaking at number 9.

After slowly gaining prominence all across Europe,  Dua Lipa’s fifth overall single “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” became the singer’s first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 72, and reaching number 23 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart.

The singer is set to release her self-titled debut album in June 2017.

Coming to Singapore for the first time, Dua Lipa will perform an exclusive acoustic showcase at JW Marriott Hotel on 8 May 2017.

In August, Lipa will be hitting Indonesia and the Philippines for We the Fest and In the Mix festivals, respectively.

Comparison review: OTT services in Malaysia (Part 1)

After Netflix and iflix were launched in Malaysia, more OTT (Over-the-Top) services have entered the market with an aim to forever change the television-viewing experience.

Though Netflix is currently the biggest player in the industry with services in over 190 countries globally, Asian competitors like iflix and Viu are rapidly growing in various Asian countries, and gaining more subscribers for its variety of content that cater to the non-English-speaking audience.

While there are plenty more top OTT services available across the world like Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Video and more, here we're going to focus and compare the ones that are available in Malaysia.

Check out the different features and offerings that these SVOD (Streaming or Subscription Video-on-Demand) services have to offer, and see the comparison table on the last page for the summary!

Netflix

Introduction: Netflix is a provider of internet only streaming media and it is safe to say that it's one of – if not – the biggest TV and movie streaming service out there right now. The VOD service may be a huge deal and a major player in the online streaming space, but back in 1998, the company's initial business model included DVD sales and rental, and was a direct competitor to the traditional movie rental companies as it forgoes rental and late fees.

Countries: Netflix is available across various devices in over 190 countries, and reportedly has over 98 million subscribers worldwide, including more than 50 million in the United States alone.

Content: Netflix entered the content-production industry in 2013, debuting its first original series, "House of Cards". The company has since expanded the production of both film and television series with an estimation of 126 original series or films in 2016, more than any other single American network or cable channel. Some of its famous original content include the Marvel television series like "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" then there's "Master of None", "Orange is the New Black", "Stranger Things", "13 Reasons Why" and more. Although Netflix is currently producing more English content, they are aiming for local original content too that's in the pipeline.

Price: RM33, RM42, or RM51 per month. The different prices mean different offers such as HD or Ultra HD availability and the number of users that can watch at the same time.

iflix
Introduction: iflix is a Malaysian based subscription video-on-demand service founded by Patrick Grove, the CEO of Catcha Group, Mark Britt and Evolution Media Capital (EMC), and is relatively a new player in the industry. The service is basically created to capitalise on the huge streaming trend that has taken over in U.S. (a.k.a. Netflix).

Countries: iflix is currently available in 10 Asian countries – Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Maldives (Dhiraagu), Pakistan, and Vietnam, with plans to expand into key emerging markets in the future. They recently expanded into Middle East and North Africa after signing a joint venture with a local telco called Zain. As of July 2016, iflix has 4 million subscribers.

Content: Seeing that the streaming service has not been properly introduced in Southeast Asia, the founders of iflix saw this as an opportunity to dominate the region with a slightly different approach in terms of its content. Unlike Netflix, iflix focuses more on Asian titles that cater to the local audience such as Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian, and Chinese content, but iflix also has exclusive rights to global breakout hit shows like "Mr. Robot", "Fargo", "Aquarius", "Muppets" and more. Recently, iflix announced that it will be producing its first ever original series, a local stand-up comedy show titled, "Oi, Jaga Mulut!".

Price: iflix service costs only RM10 per month and if you pay an annual sum of RM96, the service is only RM8 per month, and that can give you access to various hit TV shows and movies. Not only that, if you're a Streamyx or UniFi user, the service is free-of-charge.

tonton
Introduction: Owned by Media Prima Berhad, tonton started off as an AVOD (Advertising Video-on-Demand) service in 2010 and transformed itself into a hybrid video service in 2016 alongside its brand new apps offering both free (AVOD) and the newly introduced SVOD service known as tonton VIP.

Countries: tonton is available only in Malaysia, but even so, it has over 6.5 million users.

Content: Eighty per cent of tonton's offerings are local content, giving it a unique positioning not provided by other OTT players in the market. The service gives access to local TV and radio channels owned by Media Prima like TV3, NTV7, 8TV, TV9, Fly FM, Hot FM and One FM, as well as additional channels for international Chinese, Filipino, Indian and Korean content. tonton also has exclusive rights to local classics like "Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu" and "Kopitiam". The platform recently partnered with YouTube channel's JinnyboyTV to produce its first online movie.

Price: With packages starting from just RM3, members who upgrade to tonton VIP will have access to a library full of over 23,000 hours of all exclusive content, dramas, LIVE events and more before it premieres on TV.

Countries: Also available in only Malaysia, since dimsum is still relatively new, the number of its subscribers is unknown.

Content:Like Viu, dimsum provides only Asian content from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and China. The internet is baffled with Topshop’s clear plastic jeans

$

British high fashion label, Topshop just created a pair of pants that will make it okay for the ladies (or lads) who want to feel comfortable waltzing down the street in just their underwear – which is why they have proudly introduced their brand new transparent plastic jeans!

Dubbed as the MOTO Clear Plastic Straight Leg Jeans, the new “high fashion” clothing is made entirely out of plastic (despite being called jeans) and is completely see-through, priced at GBP55.

To be honest, we’re not really sure how to feel about this piece of clothing - we’re completely dumbfounded – but we know for sure that the internet has a lot to say about this pair of “jeans”.

Though fashion is all about trying new things and pushing the boundaries, we feel that Topshop might be pushing it a little too far with their new fashion statement, and this brings us to ask many questions like; doesn’t plastic make you all hot and sweaty? Aren’t we supposed to reduce plastic usage? Does this mean that you can’t wear the pants if your legs are hairy? And if it’s going to be transparent, then we might as well not wear anything at all!

According to the description on Topshop's site, the pants works as a statement piece – you know, something like earrings and necklace that will make you stand out in a crowd.

“Ideal as a statement piece for a festival or costume party, take the look to the extreme with a bikini and sequin jacket or dress down, layered under an oversized jumper or asymmetric hem dress,” reads the description of the clothing.

We’re aren’t so sure if there’s anyone who can really pull off this look – well probably Lady Gaga, or Rihanna, or the Kardashian klan.

Yep, told you a Kardashian would be into it.

Also, apparently this is not the first time Topshop has become the talk of the internet. Earlier last month, the fashion brand was ridiculed for selling Clear Knee Mom Jeans, actual jeans with clear panels on the knees or as the internet calls it, "windows for your knees".

And while we’re at it, American chain Nordstrom is also currently under fire for their new mud-coated jeans which costs USD425.

DVA, Malaysia’s first co-ed musical duo

$
0
0

In the Malaysian music industry, you don’t see a lot of male-female duos around, and even in America, it is not something very common either, especially in the pop music scene.

Some of the popular ones that we know of are Us the Duo, Sleigh Bells, Purity Ring, Crystal Castles and let’s not forget the iconic husband-and-wife duo, Captain & Tennille, but in Malaysia, a co-ed duo is something that is very rare unless it’s just a duet – but that’s whole different thing!

Seeing this as an opportunity to stand out and be different, two best friends had formed a musical duo in 2015, aptly named DVA (pronounced as “dua”) and began to cover songs from various pop artistes on YouTube.

The duo is made up of Sher and Juanita, a former rocker and a beauty queen who have been close friends with each other since college.

After countless covers and teasing their fans with new music, the talented duo was signed to Warner Music Malaysia and finally released their first ever single, “Free the Music”.

Produced by Farique Nadzir, the music video of the song was released on 13 April featuring some familiar faces from the industry, such as Darren Teh from An Honest Mistake and Sher’s own uncle Ahmad.

The song was even picked up by the MTV Asia channel and will be played alongside other mainstream pop songs regionally and internationally.

Though this song is considered DVA’s official debut into the music industry, the two have been playing gigs at various venues and have opened for many renowned artistes including Simple Plan, Daniella Andrade, Sam Tsui, Tiffany Alvord, Kurt Hugo Schneider and more.

The release of their song, “Free the Music” is only the beginning of the journey for DVA and we expect them to go even further after this. But before they do, let’s get to know them first!

DVA’s background – how and when they were formed?
The duo was officially formed in December 2015, where they released their first cover “Love Yourself” originally sang by Justin Bieber. Having known each other since college (around 2011), Juanita and Sher always talked about wanting to make music together because they both share the same love towards music.

During their final semester project, they were required to do a tribute to the class, so they wrote a song accompanied by a music video and got nominated for a Voice Independent Music Award for Best College Act (VIMA). Since then, the duo decided to work on more cover songs.

The idea behind the group’s name
As they intended to release cover songs on YouTube, they figured that they needed a name for themselves, a name that is catchy, short and memorable.

“So since there are two of us, we think just a simple ‘Dua’ is cool, but the spelling is a bit too plain so we thought of changing the ‘u’ to ‘v’ like how the band Chvrches did. Plus, ‘Dva’ also means ‘two’ in Russian and Sanskrit,” Sher explained.

Music style
Pop and funk would be the best way to describe the style of DVA’s music. Juanita is into motown and old school funk, while Sher is into Bruno Mars, so their musical style complemented each other well.

“We want our music to be something that makes people happy and makes them want to move to the music beat,” said Juanita.

International and local influences
Both of them basically listen to everything, from retro tunes to contemporary and mainstream hits.

But if they have to say who inspires them:-

International
Local
Juanita
Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Hilary Duff
The Impatient Sisters, Froya
Sher
Incubus, Guns n Roses, Alter Bridge
Farique Nadzir’s former band, Mudd Monkey

Inspiration behind “Free the Music” song
Their first single “Free the Music” gives off similar vibes to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” as that’s what it was inspired by!

“We just wanted to come up with something fun, something that changes everyone’s mood to a happy one. So we thought that if want to do the song, let’s do something like that. Something impactful and memorable where people can groove and dance to,” Juanita explained.

“Free the Music” was written by their producer Farique Nadzir, but the duo had their very own input. The song took 35 recordings and 35 mixes as the two were just unsatisfied with how it sounded, initially.

What do they think about the competition in the industry?
DVA doesn’t see other musicians as competitions but more like people that they want to work with.

“I think people should start getting used to being with people who do the same thing as you and want to be on the same platform as you. Although the people outside see it as a competition, we think that we need to help each other out and support each other because it’s such as small community and industry, and I think that you would grow more if you help each other out,” Juanita said.

The members’ secret talents
Sher– Don’t be fooled by Sher’s charm and friendly face, secretly, he’s really athletic. He has a black belt in taekwando. He’s also a national referee for taekwando matches! He represented the state in basketball and soft ball, and he does high jump as well – so you don’t want to mess with him.

Juanita – She can touch her nose with her tongue. (What?)

Songs that they are currently obsessed with
Juanita– Lorde’s “Green Light” and “Liability", Clean Bandit’s “Symphony” feat Zara Larsson.

Sher – Demi Lovato’s “No Promises” feat Cheat codes

What are their day jobs?
Sher– Host events, manage social media accounts for several brands, and manage talents.

Juanita – Hitz.fm Morning Crew DJ in charge of the 1 to 4pm slot.

Future plans
The duo signed under Warner Music Malaysia for three years, and they have plans to release an EP first and maybe a full album too, but for now, they are focusing on their second single which they have collaborated with someone (or two) from Singapore – which they can’t reveal just yet! But they promise that the person (s) is talented and the single will be great!

Like their debut single, the second single will also have a happy, funk vibe, maybe funkier with a lot of attitude, and it will most probably be out by end of this year.

So look our for DVA now!

In collaboration with one of South Korea’s leading studios, H Culture, Malaysian author Maslina Yusoff is set to adapt her famous children’s book series titled, “Mila”, to a 52-episode animation series for the international market.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on 28 April 2017 at the Kuala Lumpur Trade and Copyright Centre 2017 (KLTCC).

Maslina’s 9-series book caught the eye of Mr. Sukhwa Hong, President and Animation Director of H Culture at KLTCC 2015 after her book achieved major publishing success in China as it was translated and published in the country in 2014.

The books were published in China first before arrived in Malaysia.

“I’m really excited to see Mila come to ‘life’ through the animation series and I’m humbled that my character has garnered attention from an international studio. I believe it will be well-received by everyone and I hope it will go far,” said Maslina Yusoff.

Currently a Top 50 bestseller on Amazon China, “Mila” follows the adventure of a little girl with a big curly hair inspired by Maslina’s very own daughter.

Though the animation series will be directed by an animation director, Maslina will play a role as a scriptwriter and supervise the characters’ development.

The series which will be in the English language will target children of the age 3 to 9-years-old.

H Culture will debut a two-minute trailer for the animation series in September this year to pitch for potential buyers in France, UK and Poland, which have expressed their interest for the animation series.

In addition to developing the animation, H Culture will also be the sole agency to market the animation series globally.

“I fell in love with the character as Mila is not just a unique character, but it tells a warm-hearted story which I think will resonate well with the audiences. No doubt producing a high quality animation series will take time, but I believe with a great team and passion, we will have a great story to tell,” said Mr. Sukhwa Hong.

A Malaysian animation series will soon join Netflix’s extensive global catalogue, starting late this year in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Southeast Asia including Malaysia!

The series is none other than award-winning product “Hogie the Globehopper” created by Kuala Lumpur-based production house Lil Critter Workshop, which will be the first Malaysian animated series to join the VOD platform.

Featuring both local and foreign voice talents, the 52-episode 11-minute series follows a curious tree frog named Hogie, who travels around the globe with his friends Bernie the Dragonfly and Lorna the Duck, on a hot air balloon as they meet new people and learn different cultures all over the world.

“Hogie meets children from different corners of the world and learns about their lives. It highlights the fact that although they come from different backgrounds, children are all the same,” Lil Critter Workshop executive director Walid Omar said as quoted by The Star.

The series previously won Best Planning Award at the Seoul Promotion Plan 2015 (SPP) – Asia’s largest international animation market event in South Korea.

The 69th annual Met Gala (AKA fashion's biggest night) was themed Rei Kawakubo, a Japanese fashion designer based in Tokyo and Paris who is the founder of experimental fashion brand Commes des Garcons.

From Kim Kardashian to Selena Gomez, many celebrities rose to the occasion with a range of conceptual looks, but some seem to have missed the point. See it for yourself!

The Hadid sisters, Bella and Gigi show that despite being sisters, their taste in fashion are completely different!

Anna Wintour and Cara Delevigne show up at the Gala in a glittery ensemble.

Blake Lively and Gisele Bundchen settle with a slim-fitting long dress with trains.

Dakota Johnson and Hailee Steinfeld look stylish in their very own dramatic black attire.

Between Elizabeth Banks and Emmy Rossum, who looks better in their monochrome-themed dress?

Elle Fanning looks like a sweet and kind princess while Lily Collins looks like her opposite!

Emma Roberts and Rose Byrne arrive at the Gala with a simple bright red dress.

Jessica Chastain and Kate Hudson go minimalistic with their dress.

Katy Perry and Rihanna probably are the two stars with the most bizarre looks!

The Jenner sisters seem to be wearing the opposite of each other as Kendall appears to be more wild while Kylie seems tame.

The two bodacious stars Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj tone down their rowdy style this year with the above looks.

Lupita Nyong'o and Lily Rose Depp wears simple evening gowns which suits them very well.

Selena Gomez opted for a innocent look while Priyanka Chopra goes on a full gangsta style!

The only thing in common between Solange and Zendaya is their bushy hairstyles.

Boyzlife announces Jakarta as their first Asian date

Two of the greatest Irish boy bands from the 90s have formed a supergroup – or more accurately, a super duo called Boyzlife and is set to travel to Jakarta to deliver some nostalgic fun to the fans in Southeast Asia!

Formed by Boyzone’s Keith Duffy and former Westlife member Brian McFadden, the new group was formed in March last year and had the guys have been touring together around UK and Ireland since October 2016

Now, the Boyz are hitting the road once again for “Boyzlife: Stories - Laughter - Music: Part II” which will include their first international stop, Jakarta, Indonesia.

It is also expected that the duo will add on more dates and locations to their second tour (possibly more Asian stops), seeing that their first one was quite a success.

The two Irish singers will be performing on 21 May 2017 at Lagoon Garden, Sultan Hotel, Jakarta.

Tickets are priced at IDR495,000 (Silver), IDR850,000 (Gold), IDR1,350,000 (Diamond VVIP), IDR1,950,000 (Diamond VVIP M&G) and IDR2,500,000 (Special Diamond VVIP M&G), via id.bookmyshow.com.

The idea of forming the supergroup started when Brian and Keith met at Ronan Keating’s wedding in 2015.

Talking to The Sun UK, the two admitted that they would be the only members in the new group but they will always welcome other members to join them.

However, shortly after announcing their collaboration, another former member of Westlife, Kian Egan slammed Brian for forming Boyzlife without the other members’ consent.

“From the perspective of someone who spent 15 years in Westlife it was really aggravating. It was really unfair on the fans that everybody thought that this was what’s happening, you know that Westlife and Boyzone were getting together to do a tour,” Kian said to 98fm quoted by Metro UK.

“I was scratching my head when I first saw it. It’s a bit of an odd one – a member of Westlife who left the band after four years decides to use half the name for whatever it is that they’re doing.”

“If Westlife were ever getting back together again, it would be as Westlife. It wouldn’t be Westlife and Boyzone, it wouldn’t be Westlife and somebody else,” he continued.

After hearing the comments on RTÉ’s Late Late Show, Brian fired back, “I was actually in Westlife for more than four years but maths was never Kian’s thing in fairness.”

Japanese rock band RADWIMPS who is most recently known for singing the soundtrack for the globally successful film “Your Name” (Kimi no Na Wa), is heading to Asia this June for a tour which will include Southeast Asian cities like Singapore and Bangkok.

The tour will also include other Asian cities like Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

Thanks to the box office success of Makoto Shinkai’s latest film, the Kanagawa indie band has been catapulted into the international mainstream music scene in 2016, even though they have been around for more than a decade.

The band is responsible for singing and composing all the songs in “Your Name”, which include “Yumetoro” (Dream Lantern), “Zenzenzense” (Previous Previous Previous Life), “Supakuru” (Sparkle), and “Nandemonaiya” (It's Nothing).

Each of the abovementioned song also has the English version of it.

The soundtrack was very well received by both audiences and critics alike and is acknowledged as being one of the factors behind its success at the box office.

Kicking off in Singapore, “RADWIMPS 2017 Asia Live Tour” will begin on 4 June 2017 at Megabox Event Hall @ Bigbox, before heading to Bangkok’s Moonstar Studio (Studio 1) on 15 June 2017.

If you want to know how it feels like to eat at the North Pole, then you should definitely visit Penang’s brand new Ice Café!

Though we said North Pole, it is not exactly so as the temperature in North Pole is always below negative and since Malaysia is a naturally warm country, such feat is pretty much impossible.

But Ice Café is probably the closest that you can get to a North-Pole-like temperature as its interior is said to always maintain a temperature of 8°C to 10°C throughout the day, so if you’re visiting the place, you might want to come in winter clothing – unless you’re Elsa!

Touted as the first ice-themed café in Malaysia, the unique coffeehouse combines the novelty of cold temperature with gorgeous settings complete with ice bed, igloo, white Christmas trees, snowmen, and ice bath too!

The café serves mostly cold desserts and beverages, and their signature dish is Snowflake on Ice Bowl.

So if you feel like escaping from the hot sun outside, then Ice Café is the perfect place for you to chill!

Located at 193, Lebuh Victoria in Penang, Ice Café is open daily from 10.30am to 10.30pm.
