10 free apps to make free voice and video calls on your smartphones

$
0
0

We are not sure how many of you still subscribe to a landline. The ‘technology’ that transmits voice through a wire plugged into a wall socket before reaching a box with a dial pad and then to a often badly tangled handset is just archaic.

Heck, we don’t even have fixed-line numbers for offices anymore. For years, forms that come with the residential number field have often been left blank and most namecards these days (if they are still printing it) only list one contact number, the mobile number.

The advancement of mobile technologies and proliferation of smartphones are only going to expedite the extinction of landlines.

With more and more free voice calling apps available, it is only a matter of time before all phone calls are placed through the use of data connections like Wi-Fi and mobile broadband.

We take a look at some of the best iOS and Android apps to make free voice and video calls on.

1) WhatsApp

WhatsApp is perhaps the world’s most popular chat and calling app. Facebook recently announced that Whatsapp now has one billion users on its platform, an incredible achievement for an app idea that started out trying to put statuses beside names in your contact list. You can text and call for free with anyone else who owns the app. Recent updates to the app include video call capabilities and status of messages (whether it was received and whether it comes with an image) at the “preview” screen.

2) Facebook Messenger

Not sure how many of you uses this app, but if you are on Facebook, you would have used this feature one way or another. Facebook recently added free calls to its messenger service, giving you one more reason to stay with its social ecosystem.

3) Viber

Viber is probably one of the first communications app to offer free calls. We still remember that not too long ago, Viber was the only app we use to make overseas calls. Since than, Viber has attracted over 600 million users and was acquired by Rakuten for a whopping US$900 million. As long as you and your friends are on Viber, you can talk all you want for free.

4) Google Hangouts

The biggest differentiator or rather the only reason most people will use Google Hangouts is its ability to make free calls with other Hangouts members and create a video chat session with up to ten people simultaneously. Great for video conferences and meetings. It also has a free messaging service, allowing you to send text and stickers. The app is available on both the Google Play Store and Apple Appstore.

5) LINE

LINE is another popular option to make free calls on iPhones and Android phones. The app currently has over 200 million users are is used mainly in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia. Other than being able to call other LINE users for free, you can dial up non-LINE users for a small fee. LINE also supports free text messaging and group texting over Wifi and mobile broadband.

6) WeChat

Over half a billion people use WeChat for their free chat, voice and video call services. Started out as an alternative to Whatsapp in China, the app has quickly expanded into Southeast Asian countries. Other than the standard messaging, group chats and sending of photos, WeChat also allows you to video call and send voice memos. One cool feature of WeChat is that their translation feature. Long-press on the foreign language message and then click Translate in the pop-up menu. In recent years, WeChat has become the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all rolled in one with their Moments service, a timeline-like feature within the app for posting updates and sharing news, photos and videos.

7) Tango

Once a popular application, Tango has become a less popular service compared to Whatsapp, WeChat and LINE. Like most advanced messaging app, Tango is able to automatically identify people in your contact list and add them to the Tango contact list. Other than free calls, individual and group texting capabilities, Tango also comes with simple built-in games that you can challenge your other Tango friends with.

8) KakaoTalk

KakaoTalk is the most popular messaging app in South Korea. The app supports 15 languages and has a user base of approximately 150 million. Other than being able to text and call people for free, KakaoTalk app also runs on iOS, Android, Bada OS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Nokia Asha devices. Another cool feature with KakaoTalk is the ability to edit photos and add filters to it.

9) FaceTime

Did we mention FaceTime, the feature that started the whole video calls on smartphones movement? FaceTime was first announce by the late Steve Jobs in 2010 during an iPhone 4 launch. FaceTime works with the whole suite of Apple products be it the iPhone (iPhone 4 and later), iPod Touch, iPad and Macs running OS X. A bummer for non-Apple users is that FaceTime cannot be used with non-Apple family products. Although the quality of the video calls are good, FaceTime, unlike Skype and Google Hangouts, does not support group conferencing. The feature is strictly a one-to-one video chat. There is also the option to have an audio only call as well.

10) Skype

Last but not lest, Skype. Launched in 2003 (oh my gosh, that’s more than a decade ago), most of you are probably familiar with what Skype can do. You can make free Skype calls and text ICQ style on your mobile, laptops, desktops to other Skype members. A small fee applies for making calls to non-Skype numbers. Being one of the earliest service providers also means that it is available on most operating systems (even Linux) and is reliable. A lot of interviews with overseas candidate are conducted over Skype these days.

Know of any other apps to make free voice and video calls on? Share it with us and we will add it to this list.

Is it really over for Rayani Air after just four months?

$

The first Sharia Law-Compliant airline in Malaysia, Rayani Air, which is also the fourth in the world, will be suspended temporarily by the Transport Ministry and Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) for being unable to meet aviation requirements and regulations.

The news was announced after Rayani Air also decided to temporarily suspend all of its operations (without the DCA’s permission) until further notice.

Less than two months after the airline first began its operation, it has been facing many technicalities and issues including a broken cockpit windshield, flights being frequently rescheduled, sudden flight cancellations and more.

Due to the numerous difficulties and problems faced, the airline has been bombarded with complaints and protests from dissatisfied customers, and also their staff members including pilots and flight attendants who apparently did not get their salaries on time.

There was also that one time when politician Lau Weng San shared photo of his Rayani Air ‘boarding pass’ on Facebook, showing his name, seat number as well as the departure and destination cities hastily scribbled on a blank piece of paper with the airline’s logo printed on it.

The post went viral and the airline faced many criticisms from netizens.

“Rayani Air has contravened the conditions of its Air Operators Certificate and DCA will issue a provisional suspension notice to the airline,” said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai as quoted by The Star.

“We issued two notices last month for it to improve its services. Unfortunately, it could not perform according to the requirements,” he added.

Earlier today, Rayani Air issued an apology on their Facebook page and promised to refund its customers.

“Dear Valued Clients,
Firstly, we are very sorry for the inconveniences caused. We are working very hard to solve our internal matters and get Rayani back on track. We understand that your plans and scheduled agendas have been disrupted, we truly apologize. We will reply each and every email on your queries and refunds. We thank you for your understanding and support.”

Rayani Air first started operating on 20 December 2015. In less than four months, the airline had been officially suspended by authorities, and it is not known whether it will continue its operations in the near future.

Arsenal-themed wedding in Malaysia goes viral

This Malaysian couple are real Gooners alright! If having a complete Arsenal-themed wedding doesn’t show how much of a Gunners fan you really are, then we don’t know what will!

The wedding pictures of the newly-wed couple, Aqeel and Deena, have made a couple of rounds on social media, even earning write-ups from U.K. news outlets like The Sun and Metro UK.

The photos show the wedding venue decorated in Arsenal colours like red and white, with the bridesmaids and groomsmen donning the Arsenal football jerseys.

Everything was in accordance to the theme, except for the bride and groom whom both wore traditional wedding attire. We guess the couple wanted at least one part of their wedding to stay traditional!

The football club crest can be seen on the wedding menu, and there was also a mini football pitch complete with mini goals set up on the ballroom floor, while football matches were being played though a projector in the background.

NSFW: Most WTF celebrity wardrobe malfunctions ever!

$

Can we all agree that celebrities have always had that problem of wearing too little which then results in them flashing too much "by accident"?

Since cameras are everywhere right now, celebrities have to be very careful with what they wear because a little “accident” can immediately make the internet go virally crazy!

(GIF source: sylandsam.com)

It would be a fast way to gain publicity but definitely not a good way to do it.

Take a look at these 8 celebrities who probably had the worst wardrobe malfunction occasions ever!

1.Janet Jackson
The word “wardrobe malfunction” was first coined by Justin Timberlake at the infamous 2004 Superbowl Halftime Show where he accidentally showed Janet Jackson’s right breast which was partially covered by a piece of nipple jewellery, to the world! The controversy was widely discussed both within the United States and abroad, despite taking place for less than a second.

(GIF source: gizmodo.com)

2.Nicki Minaj
Queen Nicki is definitely no stranger to the term “wardrobe malfunction”. The rap queen has been flashing her upper and lower parts way too many times, and some are even on purpose! Having experience such exposure for countless of occasions, Nicki professionally handled herself when she suffered an unintentional wardrobe malfunction during her performance at 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

3.Toni Braxton
Toni Braxton is another artiste who always wears skimpy outfits be it on the red carpet, on stage or even for a normal outing – she just never wants to be completely covered! Anyway, at her concert at New Jersey in 2013, Tony revealed her whole buttocks to the world when the back of her dress suddenly decided to slip off. It was found that the strings of her skimpy dress came undone, and then a nice man came up to the stage and offered her his jacket.

4.Beyonce
Like Nicki, Queen Bey is also not a stranger to having the occasional wardrobe malfunction. Everywhere she goes, there will always be some nip slip and flashing. But Bey is not ashamed of it and she handles all of the situations like a pro. During her performance for “Déjà Vu” at her 2007 concert in Toronto, Beyonce flashed her bra to the audience when her very light dress went flying due to her aggressive dance moves. She later held the dress down and kept on dancing like a true professional.

5.Britney Spears
Surprisingly Britney is not the type who likes to flash herself, unless it is for work purposes of course. The singer suffered a wardrobe malfunction during her 2015 concert at Las Vegas, when she performed the song “3”. The whole situation was actually kind of funny. When she was dancing for the song, the zipper of her costume broke, exposing her lower back. She hinted her dancers about it, but while they tried to fix it, she continued dancing all over the place, and the dancers had to follow her all the way.

6.Madonna
The Queen of Pop suffered wardrobe malfunctions for two years in a row! During her “Rebel Heart Tour” stop in Bangkok, Madonna had difficulties getting out of her veil which was drawn back over her head. But this is at least a lot better than the wardrobe malfunction she had to endure last year where she took an almighty fall at the Brit Awards after getting caught in her cape, as her dancers failed to pulled it off from her gracefully. But the Queen managed to handle both of the situations like a boss!

7.Lenny Kravitz
The only male on our list, iconic rock star Lenny Kravitz had certainly rocked the audience at Stockholm last year, as well as the whole nation, when his leather jeans decided to rip apart and his genitalia decided to slip out and make a cameo in front of the whole world! Well, at least he addressed it after changing into new pants!

(GIF source: giphy.com)

8.Taylor Swift
Taytay totally had a Marilyn Monroe moment during her 2011 gig at St Louis, Missouri when a wind machine from below blew her dress completely up, exposing her Spanx underwear and accidentally flashing the entire audience for a moment, though she quickly avoided the wind afterwards. Nevertheless, the pop princess shrugged off the upskirt situation and continued her show as usual.

Welcome to The Village Naturiste at Cap d’Agdet where wearing clothes are prohibited and going butt naked is the way of life!

Located in the town of Agde in France, the resort is known as ‘Naked City’ for being the world's largest nudist town, attracting more than 40,000 body-confident visitors every summer.

The Village Naturiste is a fully functioning town where everyone at every establishment goes completely nude, and it has the world’s only nude bank, nude post office, nude hairdressers, nude supermarket and more!

Visitors need to pay a “naked tax” of NZD13.40 at the resort’s entrance, before stripping off completely and then keeping their clothes in lockers during their stay, Stuff reports.

Although nudity is compulsory at the beach, some visitors cover themselves when the weather is too cold in the evening, and some also dress up during dinner.

Any lewd behaviour at the naturist resort could land you in jail with a NZD25,000 fine, so don’t be too naughty, and in recent years, there have been complaints that the seaside town is overrun by voyeurs, libertines and swingers.

Brutal! This is how “Game of Thrones” actors discover they're going to die!

$

Those who watch “Game Of Thrones” already know that the characters of the fantasy drama series often drop dead like flies, sometimes even without a moment's notice!

You'd think that only fans of "Game Of Thrones" are subjected to the stress of discovering if their favourite character is to be killed off, but young actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright who plays Bran Stark on the popular HBO series, says that the cast feels the same too until they eventually find out for sure!

"The first sign would be a bottle of champagne and a banquet of flowers from the producers delivered to the actor's dressing room. And you'd think, Oh that's nice of them."

"Then shortly would come the dreaded phone call from them saying that you're being killed off." Said Isaac when TheHive.Asia met him in Singapore recently for the promotional event of "The Game of Thrones Experience: Worlds of Westeros" exhibition.

The 17-year-old actor was also in town to talk about his return in the upcoming season as he was noticeably absent from the entire fifth season of the series.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss are the producers of the long running "Game of Thrones" and the actor said he nearly fell off his seat when they called him before the start of season five.

"I got a call for in the morning from my agent saying that the producers wanted to talk to me on the phone. And I thought, "Oh no, it's over!" And I spent the whole day just thinking about that. They then called me and said "oh we just want you to sit out this season"."

"That was really terrifying!"

Isaac Hempstead-Wright pretending to get killed off (left) and posing for reporters (right).
In the upcoming season six, Isaac reprises his role as Bran Stark and is said to play a major part in the plot as he has honed his prophetic abilities known as 'greensight'.

At the end of season five, one of the show's lead actors and fan favourite, Jon Snow, played by actor Kit Harrington was shockingly stabbed to death. However as the episode abruptly ended right after the crucial scene, the subject of his death has been much debated about and there are some theories supporting the return of Jon Snow one way or another in the upcoming season 6.

As of season five, there have been 61 recorded deaths of major characters (not including soldiers, villagers and minor characters).

Anyway, the premiere event of "Game of Thrones" was just held in Los Angeles recently. Check out photos of the cast (without Kit Harrington) below!

Bikini airlines VietJet offering limited zero fare flights!

First bikini flight attendants and now zero fare flights? It really looks like VietJet is on a roll to further strengthen its name!

A recent update from VietJet has revealed that the international low-cost airline will be adding new routes to Malaysia and Taiwan, with plans to expand to other Southeast Asian countries too!

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Kuala Lumpur will begin from 1 June onwards, while the Ho Chi Minh City to Tainan City route will start from 22 June 2016.

As if the whole bikini fiasco wasn't enough to lure people in, VietJet is also offering 50,000 promotional tickets sold at zero fare on routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Kuala Lumpur, Tainan and Taipei.

Hurry! This promo will only be for flights booked between 12 to 18 April 2016.

The promotional travel period for Ho Chi Minh City to Kuala Lumpur starts from 1 June to 30 October 2016, while for Ho Chi Minh to Tainan and Taipei route is from 22 June to 30 October 2016, excluding public holidays.

While Taiwan may be able to enjoy the on-flight bikini model show (lucky them!), it is highly unlikely that Malaysia will get the same entertainment too due to the country’s strict laws.

“Kuala Lumpur isn’t a beach destination,” said Vietjet Vice President Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh when questioned about the possible in-flight show at the press conference of the new routes.

So, since there won't be any bikini shows on board in Malaysia, we're wondering what gimmicks does VietJet have for it's customers - maybe the flight attendants will don the baju kebaya and do the zapin dance instead?

However, it is expected that there will be activities like singing performances, magic shows as well as meet-and-greet sessions with celebrities on board.

Let's wait and see what VietJet has planned up their sleeves!

Are vibrators really being sold at this well-known pharmacy in Malaysia?

Smile Makers vibrators are now available at Watsons Malaysia!

Surprised? So are we! Honestly, we thought that it was some kind of an April Fool’s joke, but turns out it’s not, as Watsons Malaysia have even officially announced it on their Facebook page with a launch event held just recently!

“Smile Makers' mission is to normalise one’s sexual wellbeing and reframe it as a natural and healthy part of beauty care and life,” read their post on Facebook.

The vibrators come in four different designs and colours, and are called; The Frenchman, The Fireman, The Tennis Coach and The Millionaire.

Now here’s the big question – Will it really be a smooth journey for Watsons Malaysia to be able to sell these ‘toys’ in a Muslim-populated country?

Since the news is fairly new, it would only be a matter of time before someone out there would start making a fuss about it.

Remember back then when there were several adult stores in Malaysia at famous shopping malls like Mid Valley Megamall selling sex toys? They were all eventually closed down.

Anyway, each of the vibrators are priced at RM129 and are now available at Watsons Malaysia stores and website.

Shila Amzah sings the Malay and Mandarin version of “Powerpuff Girls” theme

Multi-award winning Malaysian singer Shila Amzah has been chosen to sing the opening theme song of the new “Powerpuff Girls” series in both Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin!

Different from the opening sequence of the original series, the new theme song, titled “Who’s Got the Power” has a punchy pop-rock tune and its own song verse and chorus.

It is also a lot sassier too as it reflects the theme of the new series which is more fun and full of energy.

We think Shila’s vibrant and bubbly personality and also her powerful vocals matches well with the vitality of the new theme!

“I am so honoured to be working with Cartoon Network for “The Powerpuff Girls” re-launch. Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles are girl-power icons, and are characters that inspired me when I was growing up. I love that the new theme song is so energetic and up-beat, which is quite different to what I normally perform. It was a thrill to try something new in the way of singing and I can’t wait to see the end product on Cartoon Network,” said Shila.

The original “Powerpuff Girls” series created by Craig McCracken has won two Emmy Awards, two Annie Awards and sixteen nominations for various awards throughout its 78-episode run.

We wonder if the rebooted version will now have more diverse characters to represent Asia since the theme songs are totally targeting the Asian crowd!

The new series will premiere on 2 May 2016 at 5.30pm on Cartoon Network (Astro Channel 616).

Listen to theme songs below!

Here’s what Zouk has to say about the Paralympian’s video

Two days ago, news about a U.S. Paralympian Josh Sundquist who said he had his crutches stolen by bouncers in Malaysia, have been circling social media like wildfire, with many supporting Sundquist as a victim of the situation.

If you haven’t heard (Hey! Where have you been?), on 12 April, Sundquist had released a video with the title “Security gang stole my crutches” on YouTube.

Sundquist came to Malaysia to give motivational talks at IM4U's Reach Out convention.

Shedding tears and looking devastated, he talked about his recent traumatic experience at Zouk KL, Malaysia.

Sundquist claimed that he was mistreated by the bouncers at Zouk KL as they stole his crutches from him as he was dancing.

But yesterday, the other party had finally spoken up!

Well OK, it’s a Facebook post, but still…

Zouk KL released their full statement explaining the whole situation where it was said that the bouncers were never rude to the Paralympian as claimed by Sundquist who is also a bestselling author and a motivational speaker.

“We would like to clarify that Zouk KL does not discriminate against persons with disabilities, a policy it has held since its inception in 2004,” read the statement.

Sundquist claimed that while he was dancing on the middle podium, two bouncers came and took away his crutches, leaving him immobile on the podium.

But Zouk strongly denied it saying that the story told by Sundquist is inaccurate as they have the whole situation recorded on CCTV showing otherwise.

“One security staff member held on to Mr Sundquist’s right arm, while the other security member supported his left forearm, providing support on either side. His crutches were returned to him promptly when Mr Sundquist was on the dance floor.”

Zouk also explained that the reason they ushered him down from the podium in the first place was because the podium is strictly for female patrons only, and they did not aggressively force him to get off the podium.

In their statement, Zouk KL said that they will welcome all reporting press to view the CCTV footage at the club if they need further proof.

Despite releasing a long statement explaining about the misunderstanding, many Facebook commenters were still unconvinced with the claims made by Zouk KL, and some even asked the club to post the CCTV video on Facebook for all to see!
