Remember The Dress, the viral internet meme which took over the world back in February last year?

Well looks like this picture of a pair of certain legs has become the new “Dress” as it has gotten the internet debating whether the legs are shiny and oily, or are they just covered in white paints.

The photo began circulating around the internet when Instagram user Hunter Culverhouse shared the photo of her legs, and the photo soon got picked up by other social media users who couldn’t decide whether the legs are shiny or are they just normal legs with paint.

“I was finishing off some art homework and had some white paint left on my brush and just decided to draw random lines, I had no intentions of making it look shiny,” Culverhouse told Buzzfeed.

Now, so many weird and crazy costumes have surfaced and they don’t seem to have anything to do with the original intention and tradition of Halloween anymore, but still, it is fun to dress up and hang out with your friends and family on this annual, largest costume party!

The oddly addictive song which became the top meme of the year is definitely one of the most must-wear Halloween costumes for this year. The costume is so iconic, and it is not that hard to find an outfit similar to the one worn by Piko Taro.

Suicide Squad
(Photo sources: fashionablygeek.com, myeverydaylifestyle.com, adafruit.com)

(Photo sources: popsugar.com)
“Ghostbusters” is an all-time cult favourite, and with the all-female reboot this year, the popularity of the franchise just increases more and more. Wearing Ghostbusters outfits on Halloween is so fitting, as the very definition of ghost-busting is meant for this very day! So, for those deciding to dress up as the Ghostbusters, it is time for you to catch some monsters and ghouls on Halloween.

(Photo sources: firestormfan.com)
Superheroes have always been one of the top costumes to wear every year, and people just never get bored of it. Thanks to Marvel and DC Comics for coming up with various superhero characters – and some new ones too in recent years – there's a long list for you to choose from! But of course, to be safe, people usually just go with the mainstream ones from the recent “Avengers” and “Justice League” movies. But who says you have to follow the crowd? Stand out from the rest by dressing up as characters which have yet to appear in any movie!

Bunkface talks about their 10 years' worth of music journey

$

0

Having been in the music industry for more than 10 years, pop punk trio Bunkface is considered one of the most successful and stable local bands there are in Malaysia with their strong reputation, large fan base, and various awards and recognitions.

2016 seems to be a great year for the band as they have recently signed to major music label Universal Music Malaysia, they got nominated in the prestigious MTV EMAs Best Southeast Asian act, and they will soon hold a large-scale concert to mark their 10th year anniversary.

Made up of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Sam (Shamsul Anuar), bass guitarist Youk (Farouk Jaafar), and lead guitarist Paan (Ahmad Farhan), the three amigos have been together since Bunkface first started in 2006.

Since then, the band has released tons of popular local hits like “Silly Lily”, “Situasi”, “Revolusi”, “Prom Queen”, “Through My Window”, “Malam Ini Kita Punya”, “Darah Muda” and “Masih Di Sini”.

Bunkface has so far released one English EP “Lesson of the Season”, and three albums; “Phobia Phoney”, “Bunk Not Dead”, and “Malam ini Kita Punya”.

This year, the band has certainly hit a whole new milestone as they will also release a special compilation album titled “Bunkface X” (with X, stands for the Roman numeral 10) featuring all the famous tracks from the band’s past albums, and will be released by end of this year.

At the recent press conference of “Bunkface X Live in Kuala Lumpur”, the band members visit the past and tell us about their 10-year journey in the music industry as well as their upcoming plans for the future.

How do you feel about your progress over the years?
Sam:To be honest, ten years is quite long, so it felt great! We started off with reality competition “Blast Off” in 2006, which we lost. But even though we lost, I think the people from Astro kind of like our songs, so we signed a deal with them and release our first single “Silly Lily”. Our journey as a band kind of started from there, we started to get more and more attention, and people began to call us for shows. Basically our journey is just like any other band; we play at shows, festivals, and then decided to go mainstream – it’s pretty much the same, but we have a really great time throughout the journey and we never look back.

Do you think the sound of your music has changed a lot within these 10 years?
Sam: It doesn’t really change that much but maybe the instrumentation is a bit different because we’re getting older, so the style may be a little bit more mature. But our lyrical style is still the same.

How do you feel getting nominated in MTV EMAs and do you have confidence to win this category?
Paan:We will be competing against some of the best in Southeast Asia like Yuna, Raisa from Indonesia, Thaitanium from Thailand and more. But it’s okay because we have Bunkers who vote for us every single day and we feel assured with them at our back!

Youk: InsyaAllah, with Bunkers supporting us, we feel confident all the time!
Sam: Nevertheless, we are already grateful that our name is on that list even if we didn’t win.

You’ve just recently signed under Universal Music Malaysia, how did that happen and why now did you decide to join a major label?
Sam: Actually, we’ve previously signed to Sony Music before. But I guess we decided to join Universal Music because we trust the team that they have now, so we’re confident to join them.
Youk: It’s not that we don’t trust the team they have previously, but it’s just wasn’t satisfying.

Are you worried that your music will be controlled by Universal Music?
Youk: Bunkface has been around for 10 years, we’re no longer new. So we already know what music we want to play and deliver, so there’s no use of them controlling us because we’re not a fresh band. Maybe the label will push us more towards collaboration with other artistes.

After officially signing to Universal Music Malaysia, what are some of the plans that Bunkface will do in the future?
Sam: This time around, with Universal Music to support us, we are trying to make our music more global by securing an international producer so that our music will have a slightly different vibes. That’s one of our aims, we are currently looking on this and hopefully it will happen really soon.

Are you planning on continuing your 10-year celebration outside of Malaysia, like in Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong?
Sam: Of course we would love to, but before we go out of Malaysia, we plan on having another concert in Sabah or Sarawak first.

Bands usually have drummers, but not Bunkface. Why is that?
Sam: That’s because we’re different, and the other bands are boring – just kidding! [laugh] Actually we do have a drummer; his our sessionist. But back then, we actually started Bunkface with four members, but one of the members, which was our ex-drummer couldn’t continue due to some personal reasons. From then on, we decided not to look for new drummer because we think it would be easier to handle the band, and when we split profits among the member, each of us will get a little bit more! [laugh]

Paan:We’re very honest!

Sam: Yes we are, that’s why we can stay together for 10 years.

Youk: We’ve been friends for 10 years, so we’re already used to each other. So if we take in a new member it would be awkward because he might not be used to the way we do things or he may easily get offended by us, so we think it’s best if it just the three of us.

Sam: It’s okay for the three of us to offend each other! [laugh]

Bunkface has indeed been maturing for the past few years. But are you guys still maintaining your punk rock genre or do you think that your genre has changed?
Sam:From the beginning, we never claimed that we’re a punk rock band, we’re just a band. For us, Bunkface is already a genre itself. So whatever we do, we will always be Bunkface because I will always be the one singing for the band, and I will always sing with my own style. There will be some changes in terms of less drum sounds, or slower music pace, but basically the element is still there. We will mix and match, and we’re not going to stick to the same style. For the sake of the newer generation, we need to change our sound according to the trend.

Youk: The era is changing, so sometimes we need to change according to times and needs. Maybe our music sounds different back then because we follow the trend back then, but now the music is different, so we need to change it too so that we would be relevant.

Sam: So if you’re asking whether we have changed musically? Yes, we have, but in a good way. We need to think of the coming generation, we can’t keep playing to the people from our generation, it would be unfair for the newer generations.

For MTV, you are competing against some of the greatest artistes in Southeast Asia including Yuna what are the chances of Bunkface emerging as the Best Act in the category?
Sam: Seems a bit impossible, isn’t it? [laugh] Because the award uses the voting system, it goes back to our fans, Bunkers. So if our fans are strong enough and vote for us every day, then we definitely can win – it’s as simple as that.

Lastly, who do you think is your biggest competitor in MT V EMAs Best Southeast Asia act category?
Sam: All of them are big! We’re actually the smallest. [laugh] We’re already grateful that we’re nominated. To be honest, we don’t even think that we have the chance to win. If we win, we would wonder why, but we will still be grateful. We’re competing against Yuna, Thaitanium, Raisa – all of these are huge names, we’re very honoured to be listed along with them in that category!

Malaysian Indian singer Resh is actually just like all of us, except that he’s a multi award-winning singer-songwriter who has a huge following in the Asian region!

After the success of “Half the Man”, the 40-year-old singer recently presented his latest single “Trouble”, the third single from his EP “Who Am I”, featuring India’s very own indie artist, Monica Dogra.

In his own words, “‘Trouble’ is about falling in love dangerously. It’s when you reach a point in your relationship where your next step could be a dangerous step or it could take you to a better level. So that’s essentially how “Trouble” came about. It’s not necessarily good, nor is it necessarily bad.”

The song is currently enjoying a considerable amount of airplays in Indonesia, India and Singapore, and is slowly gaining traction in Malaysia too!

In our recent meeting with the talented singer, we found out that despite all of the success that he has, Resh is pretty much like all of us – a normal down-to-earth family man with beautiful wife and children, and who also likes to sweat it all out in the gym!

Get ready to learn another side of Resh via this rapid fire series of questions we've asked him below!

  1. When I'm not singing, I...am working out in the gym.
  2. At home, I'm usually very...relaxed and composed – the happiest person, in a nutshell.
  3. When it comes to parenting, my role is...the good cop!
  4. I am secretly a...entrepreneur.

Playing catch up with An Honest Mistake

Since their debut in 2008, An Honest Mistake has been nothing short of impressive, performing at various music festivals and gigs across Asia, sharing the stage with plenty of renowned international acts such as Boys Like Girls, Motion City Soundtrack, and Against The Current, and releasing 3 albums in the span of eight-years.

Despite almost reaching a decade, the quartet band’s music journey is just getting started as they have recently signed to Universal Music Malaysia, and have just released their debut single under the major label, titled “We’re Alright”.

Even before going mainstream, the band which consists of lead vocalist Darren Teh, lead guitarist Leonard Chua, bassist Tomas Tam and drummer Ian Ng, already have a huge following in the indie music scene, especially outside of Malaysia, as the band is known for actively participating in countless regional tours in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Although An Honest Mistake (AHM) has been in the music scene for quite some time now, they are still considered as new in the mainstream industry, so now that they have finally signed to a renowned music label, it is a good opportunity to reintroduce them to the people!

See what lead vocalist Darren and lead guitarist Leonard have to say about the band's recent updates!

So guys, tell us! How does it feel to be part of Universal Music, and how did it happen?
Darren: The first initial meeting was at an event, organised by Universal, and I happened to be there. So I started talking to them, and then they’re like “Oh yeah, we heard of you guys. Why don’t you come to the office.” So that was the first initial meeting, which was last year October. We officially signed to the label in March.

Why did you guys decide to finally join a major label, and do you think it’s the right thing to do?
Darren:A lot of independent bands will think that signing to major label is like signing their life away. That’s not entirely true. If you have the right understanding of how things are then you will be able to move in the right direction. For us, signing with a major label in Malaysia, it only means that now we have a team that is working behind us for marketing and for doing all the legal stuff.

Leonard: Yes, it’s just that prior to this, we’ve been doing it on our own.

Darren: At least now, we can focus on the craft of creating good music, for us and for the people.

So will Universal Music have a say in how the band would sound eventually?
Darren: Previously, a lot of people would have this perception that they will be controlled. But we have come to the understanding that it’s a partnership rather than a label owning us. So our sound will still be the same, nothing will really change.

Now that you have signed to a big label, what are some of the plans you have in the future?
Darren: The most immediate plan is that we’re coming up with a Christmas EP which is going to be released in December. But at the same time, we will be playing at a lot of music festivals this year and also next year. We’re planning for bigger things and to have more regional stuff like working with regional artistes under the Universal umbrella.

The band has been around for 8 years, how do you feel about your progress over the years?
Leonard: Good! [laugh]

Darren: The band started off as a side project, and it wasn’t even our main focus in the beginning. Previously, the biggest line-up that we had was 6, we had a violinist and a female vocalist but it didn’t work out. So we’ve been around for so long, and we’ve already got 3 albums. It shows that we are still able to produce music and sustain ourselves in a scene that is constantly changing and developing. We have also taken the position that we will go with the change, rather than to maintain one type of sound.

Leonard: We’re still keeping our original sound but having all these different sounds, like all the elements of it in our music.

You guys recently performed at Zandari Festa so where are you guys heading off to next?
Darren: Next week we’ll play in Penang for the Northern Music Festival, and then we will play in Philippines for Threadfest Manila, and possibly in December... we might go to New Delhi, India for the Vans New Wave Festival.

Any future albums coming out soon under Universal Music?
Darren: After the Christmas EP, we’re aiming to release an album by mid next year. “We’re Alright” will be included in the album. We’ve already got some demos done, so it’s just waiting towards forming and creating the album.

Anyone you would want to collaborate with in this album?
Leonard: The priority would definitely be someone within the Universal family. Usually we would also collaborate with friends within our circle who share the same vision.

What about plans for AHM's own headlining concert or tour?
Leonard: Ultimately, that is the goal.

Darren: That’s definitely the plan. Once the album is out, we’ll do a full on album launch and promotional tour.

Leonard: But to put up a concert, you definitely need to be up to the community. So what we’re doing at the moment is putting a lot of effort into building the community and fanbase. So that during the concert, there won’t be just 50 people coming! [laughs]

Taking Back Sunday is one of those bands that needs no introduction at all!

Known for their hit single “MakeDamnSure” from the band's breakout mainstream album “Louder Now”, the group which was formed in 1999, has sold millions of albums with over 900,000 copies for “Louder Now” alone.

Comprising of vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist and vocalist John Nolan, guitarist and founder Eddie Reyes, bassist Shaun Cooper and drummer Mark O'Connell, the band has certainly evolved from being a scrappy punk act into seasoned songwriters, and they have continued to forge a successful career to this very day.

The band has recently released their seventh studio album called “Tidal Wave” via Hopeless Records which peaked at number 36 on the Billboard 200.

“This album is truly an expression of what Taking Back Sunday is during this snapshot in time as opposed to what we think people expect from our band,” frontman Adam Lazzara said in a statement.

Coming to Malaysia for the very first time this month for Rockaway, guitarist and co-lead vocalist John Nolan revealed to TheHive.Asia on the band’s excitement towards the festival and their latest updates.

This would be your first time in Malaysia! How does it feel to be finally performing in the country?
It is. We're very excited to get over there. It's always really interesting to experience a new place and meet our fans there.

What was your reaction when TBS were first approached for Rockaway?
We were very excited about it. It's nice to be part of festival when you're performing in a country for the first time.

Tells us about your recently released album, “Tidal Wave”, like how is it different from your previous albums and what is the inspiration behind this album?
We explored some new musical territory on this album. There's a wider range of sound and styles on it. I think we've all also grown as musicians and you can really hear that.

What is your most favourite song from the album and why?
I honestly love them all and I haven't been able to choose a favorite.

Taking Back Sunday has been in the industry for quite a long time, have you guys ever thought that the band could’ve gone this far?
No, we never expected to go this far. I think none of us really ever thought that far ahead. We've always kind of taken things tour by tour and album by album and can't believe we're still able to do this.

Do you think you have evolved musically over the years?
Definitely. Our musical tastes have changed and evolved and we've grown as musicians, both individually and in our ability to work off of each other.

What other projects are you guys up to next?
We're going to be touring the world in support of Tidal Wave. The album has only been out a little while so touring is really only just starting.

What can Malaysian fans expect from your upcoming performance at Rockaway?
Hopefully an exciting, energetic show and a really fun time!
