American celebrity chef Buddy Valastro or better known as Cake Boss, visited Malaysia recently to promote the new season of “Cake Boss”, a reality TV series that follows the operations of Carlo's Bake Shop, which is owned by Buddy and his family.

Inspired by his father's way of teachings and life, Buddy got his interest in baking by working with his father at Carlo’s bakery at a very young age.

“My dad never said to me that I have to be a baker, he took me to work because he wanted me to learn the work ethic, so that I know what it’s like to work,” Buddy said during a media conference at Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur.

“Sometimes the lessons that he taught me in life, I try to teach to my kids. The things that he taught really defined and made me who I am today.”

After his father passed away, Buddy had to drop out of high school at the age of 17 to run the bakery.

“When you're punch with an extreme circumstance, it’s either that you sink or swim, and for my circumstance, because I was still a kid, it made me believe that everything was achievable.”

“One of the things that I teach my kids is that, there is no can’t, it’s how,” he added.

The 39-year-old baker is truly the same in person as how he is on the show; friendly, inspiring, funny and humble, he even offered the Malaysian little chef Leah a chance to appear on his show!

“Honestly, it was the way I was raised. I was raised to never forget where you come from because you’re never too big for something.”

Here are some other things that he had shared during his visit to Malaysia.

How it all began
As a fourth generation baker, Buddy Valastro got into the cake-making business due to the influence of his father, who was encouraged by his father (AKA Buddy’s grandpa) to be a baker. Buddy’s father, Bartolo Valastro Sr, started working in Carlo’s bakery owned by Carlo Guastaffero, since he was 13.

13 years later in 1964, Bartolo bought the bakery from Mr Carlo who owned it since 1910, but he decided to keep the original name of the bakery because it was already established.

Even though Mr Carlo had a son, his son didn’t want to be a baker and went to work for NASA instead.

“So my dad took over the bakery and it’s been in my family ever since, and it’s funny because sometimes I meet Carlo’s son who worked for NASA, and he comes to me and says, ‘Man, I couldn’t be more proud of what you did with my father’s name!’”

Buddy had also named his youngest son, Carlo Valastro after the bakery.

Popularity of “Cake Boss”
Buddy Valastro has travelled the world to promote the show and to make Carlo’s Bake Shop a household name.

The series was so popular that it has been viewed in 220 different countries and territories all over the world, dubbed in 45 languages, and has been seen by over one and half billion people globally.

Buddy believes that the show can resonate with so many different cultures in so many different places and regions around the world, due to the family element.

“I think that no matter where you go in the world, family is such a strong presence and everybody relates to that. Although in Cake Boss we fight and argue all the time, but at the end of the day, we’re family, and I think that people can relate to that.”

Family members working at Carlo’s Bake Shop
According to Buddy Valastro, the family members alone makes up of at least 15 to 20 people of his staff.

“There’re too many! I’m going to give you guys a sister or two!” [laughs]

Currently, there are 13 Carlo’s bakeries in the United States, and with the restaurants, production companies and more, Buddy has already over a thousand people working for him.

All the siblings, cousins and relatives of Buddy Valastro.

His take on the ultimate birthday cake
“When I think of a cake for you on your birthday, what I really want to do is to tell it for you. So whether it’s going to be your style, colour theme, or whatever's that special in your life, I would apply that to your cake. I would want to know your favourite things!”

On what makes a chef or a baker
Buddy confesses that he never considers himself as a chef, even though he does cook, starred in Kitchen Boss and even owns restaurants in Las Vegas and Transylvania.

He just considers himself a really good home cook and he never had prior professional training.

“What we do in my restaurants is that we want to bring a home experience to the diners. I want you to feel like, my mom, or my grandma or my dad are cooking for you. I want you to taste homemade and authentic, approachable Italian cuisine.”

However, when it comes to baking, Buddy consider himself as a master baker, because to him, baking is just like “walking or breathing”, which shows how much he knows about baking.

But to him, what separates a great baker or chef from the rest is the extra steps that put them above the rest.

“You have to really care about what you're doing and even if it takes you longer, even if you have to redo it, you’ve got to feel good about what you’re doing, because that’s what makes you better and stronger.”

The best cake he's ever made
With “Cake Boss” entering its eight season, Buddy Valastro have already make thousands of cakes. But one particular cake which he was really proud of was the “Transformers” Bumblebee cake he made about 4 years ago.

The cake was made for a Chevrolet auto show, and Buddy and his team had worked for 3 days straight, and 18 hours a day.

“I’ll never forget the moment when we finished the cake, it was about 4 in the morning, and we needed to deliver it at 6AM. I stepped back and I looked at the cake. I started crying and I said to myself, ‘Man, I wish my dad can see this cake.’ I couldn’t even fathom doing anything like that. I didn’t think it was possible but the fact that we did it, makes it a special moment.”

Buddy has the picture of the cake as his screensaver.

The most technical cake
On “Cake Boss”, Buddy and his team have been getting all sort of strange requests throughout the show, and some seem to be really impossible to make.

There’re requests which ask him to make a toilet bowl cake that flushes, a life-size cow cake, a snow globe cake which needs to incorporate a hairdryer in it – but despite all the strange and impossible requests he has received, Buddy managed to make it all happen.

But the hardest and most technical cake in his opinion was the Nascar cake in 2011, because it was the actual size of a car, weighing around 20 thousand pounds.

“That one was really hard and honestly, I tell people that all the time. I wish we can do it all over again, because I learned a lot from that, and I think that if we can do it again, we would definitely be a lot more efficient, and do a better job this time around.”

It took 4 days and 56 people to make this cake.

How he updates himself with the latest trend and where he get his inspiration
Turns out, Buddy is just like every one of us. He gets inspiration from people posting on social media and websites like Pinterest and Facebook, and sometimes he even Googles them. But instead of relying on just one recipe, he would mix and match.

“I’ve always been a fan of sharing. When I see someone copying my cakes, I look at it as an honour. I won’t think that the person is not good enough for ripping my ideas, I’m more about sharing.”

Buddy also said that his inspiration can come from anything!

“I can see a dress flowing on a girl, and thinking I could do the same thing on my cake, but with fondant. I see architecture, like the Malaysian twin towers here, and I think that they’re amazing. The closer you get to them the more details you see.”

Seeing all the unusual cakes on “Cake Boss”, it is obvious that there are a lot of architectural elements in them, but if we talked about Buddy’s favourite inspiration, it’s got to be nature, as Buddy is all about being healthy and his colour coordination is always amazing.

Expansion of Carlo’s Bake Shop
The goal of the television show was to make Carlos bakery a household name and that was also the legacy that Buddy had promised his dad, and after eight seasons of “Cake Boss”, it is now known all over the world.

But the new legacy is now to have Carlo’s bakery on every continent, which Buddy believes will be happening within the next five years, and they’re already opening one in Bauru, Brazil.

“I also think that I would love to have it here in Malaysia. I think now that I'm here for the first time, and kind of engaging the fans and the awareness of the show, and getting the feel of the city and the culture, because honestly, until you're really in it, you don’t know it.”

The first Carlo's bakery to open outside of America is in Brazil.

His thought on Malaysian food
“It’s funny because, two doors down from the bakery, we have a restaurant called Satay, which is a Malaysian cuisine, and we get lunch there often. I think the food is good, but I can’t compare to like real Malaysian food. But I’m excited to eat and taste the flavour here.”

The eighth season of "Cake Boss" will premiere on 9 November 2016 on TLC, Astro channel 707.

Third Eye Blind on bringing the 90s vibe to Malaysia

Third Eye Blind are one of those nostalgic bands that remind us how great the songs from the 90s were.

With several of their smashing 90s hits like “Semi-Charmed Life”, “Jumper”, “How’s It Going to Be”, and “Never Let You Go”, Third Eye Blind is the very epitome of 90s alternative rock.

The band has gone through many member changes with lead vocalist Stephan Jenkins and drummer Brad Hargreaves being the only remaining core members while the other current members are made up of Kryz Reid (lead guitar), Alex Kopp (keyboards), and Alex LeCavalier (bass guitar).

The current members include Stephan Jenkins, Brad Hargreaves, Kryz Reid, Alex Kopp, and Alex LeCavalier.

But despite the line-up changes, the band is still going strong today, having just released their latest EP “We Are Drugs” a month ago, which features “Cop Vs. Phone Girl”, a lyrically strong song that touches on sensitive topics such as social justice, police brutality, Black Lives Matter and racism.

This month, Third Eye Blind is set to perform at one of Malaysia's biggest music festivals, Rockaway on 19 November 2016 at Extreme Park, Bukit Jalil.

But before the concert, TheHive.Asia had the opportunity to interview the band’s lead guitarist Kryz Reid who told us everything from the band’s latest EP, to their progress and upcoming show in Malaysia!

Current lead guitarist replaced Tony Fredianelli in 2010.

How does it feel performing in Malaysia for the very first time?
We’re really excited for it. It’s gonna be my first time in KL, really looking forward to it!

How do guys feel being a part of Rockaway and how did it happen?
We’re really happy to be part of the festival. How it happened is some kind of behind the scenes magic, right? We never want to know how the sausage is made! [laughs]

A photo posted by Third Eye Blind (@thirdeyeblind) on

So you guys just released your latest EP “We Are Drugs” this month, can you tell us more about it and what fans can expect from it at the show?
It’s an EP that came together really quickly. We recorded it in a few different studios while we were touring throughout the year. We started playing the songs live at soundchecks and sometimes at shows then bashed them out in the studio. It’s a really immediate snapshot of the band right now.

Why is the EP called “We Are Drugs”, is it somehow related to your fifth album “Dopamine”?
Stephan had the idea that it would be continuous of the themes on Dopamine, like an addendum to it. It started out as an idea he had for a t-shirt! [laughs]

Cover of "We Are Drugs".

Do you have a favourite song from the EP, and why?
I don’t really, they’re all like our kids, I can’t pick one over another.

“Dopamine” is quite a success, how is the reception for “We Are Drugs” thus far?
It’s been really, really well received. Maybe a better reception than Dopamine, I’m not sure. Our fan base went nuts over it as soon as it came out, and it went straight to number 1 on iTunes.

In 2012, you guys mentioned that after the release of the fifth album, TEB would cease releasing full albums, in favour of smaller EP releases. Why did you guys decide to do that?
That was something Stephan said which was more about immediacy, ya know? Releasing the songs as they are ready to go out instead of waiting to have a collection of tracks and a concept and everything else that goes along with making a record all lined up. More like again, a snapshot of the songs as they are at that time rather than over thinking it.

Third Eye Blind has been in the industry for more than 20 years now, how do you think your music has changed over the years?
I think there’s always been a common thread through Third Eye’s music lyrically which kind of binds it all together regardless of the musical styles, which are always being pushed. “Isn’t it Pretty” on the new EP is a perfect example of that. It’s like nothing else on the EP, yet it’s bound to the rest of the tracks because of Stephan’s lyrics and vocal delivery, I think.

What are your tips on surviving in the music industry since every year, more and more new musicians and talents are surfacing?
I’ll give you the two best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given with relation to the music industry - “Show up on time, play awesome, wear a clean shirt.” and “Always be spectacular.”

What can we expect from your upcoming performance at Rockaway Malaysia?
The spectacular!

Aimee Carrero is Disney’s latest spunky heroine

Disney’s latest and first Latina princess is set to make her royal debut in the highly anticipated animated series, “Elena of Avalor”, which takes places in the same universe as “Sofia the First”.

The bold and compassionate crown princess of the enchanted fairytale kingdom of Avalor, Princess Elena is voiced by the ever-so-lovely Dominican-American actress Aimee Carrero, who is known for her role as Angie on the series “Level Up”, and Sofia Rodriguez on the sitcom “Young & Hungry”.

As Disney's first princess inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, the series follow Princess Elena’s adventure to save her magical kingdom, Avalor from an evil sorceress, while at the same time, she must learn to rule her kingdom as a crown princess.

Carrero currently stars on hit series “Young & Hungry” which had just recently been renewed for a fifth season.

For her role as Princess Elena, the 28-year-old actress shares her experience with TheHive.Asia everything from her challenges as a voice actress, to her favourite Disney princess, and also her common characteristics with the Latina princess!

How does it feel to become a Disney Princess, and the first Latina princess at that?
It’s a wonderful honour and at the same time, it’s an incredible surprise. Every now and then, it’s kind of something I have to remind myself about because it seems so surreal. It’s been a very long awaited moment, and it’s just incredible to have been chosen to voice this character.

Why did you decide to audition for the role?
My agent sent me an audition and I want to have a job, so I auditioned. But at that time it was kept very secret so I didn’t know what it was for, and I didn’t even know who the character was. I found out when they made the announcement and I also found out from everybody else, so it was a thrill to say the least.

How is voice acting different from acting, and what are the challenges?
Well that’s a great question. I've never done anything animated before, so it was absolutely a challenge to begin with. I think possibly the most noticeable difference is that as an actor a lot of their tools are removed. So you don’t have your face, your body or anything to tell the story, the only thing you have is your voice. So I think just being very careful about the inflection and making sure that all of the emotions are transmitted through your voice. It’s definitely a learning curve, but I had an amazing team of people that were there to make sure that would happen in the very beginning. And as the time went on, I think I’ve improved a little bit.

Do you have a favourite Disney Princess?
Yeah, like everybody else, I grew up watching Disney movies. They’re a big part of my upbringing! I remember we have a cabinet just full of VHS-es, and most of them are just Disneys and we watched them a lot until the tapes kind of wore out. And I grew up in Florida, so we would go to Disneyland multiple times a year. But I would say, growing up, I really love Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan, because they seem to be kind of like their own heroes, and they were in the action. They were just a different kind of princess, and I really like that!

Other than being a Latina, what are some of the similarities that you share with Princess Elena?
Well, I think she kind of has like a silly personality, and I can’t help but be silly too sometimes! I think we definitely have that in common, in terms of our sense of humour. I don’t know, maybe it’s a compliment to me, but I also think that whenever Elena fails or something doesn’t go the way she is expecting to, she is always going to try again. She’s not easily discouraged, and I would say that I consider myself as someone who is not easily discouraged too.

How do you usually get into character, like what do you do before getting into the studio?
You want to make sure that you really read the script, and you know what’s going to be expected of you beforehand. And there’re also these really weird technical things like, I try not to drink coffee because caffeine can really affect your voice, and it dries up your mouth, so it doesn’t sound as good. Also, a lot of time when there’s action involved, as much as you try, but if you don’t actually do the action while you are performing it, it would actually really sound like you’re fake jumping or fake running, so you have to really do something. It’s a lot more active than I expected, so I try to make sure that mine sounds authentic.

What do you wish that young viewers can learn from Princess Elena?
I hope that anybody watching the show can see that there are things about everybody that make them special and unique, like Elena is Latina and the fact that she lives with her grandparents, and she is still 16 – but what I like people to take away from it is the central message, which is that it’s a story of a young girl trying to be a leader at a very young age, and she’s trying to figure out how she fits in into the world and what she has to offer. And I think that the act of growing up is something that we all identified with, so it’s actually a very universal story.

"Elena of Avalor" premieres on 13 November, Sunday, 11am on Disney Channel (Astro Ch 615).

[Photos] Royal Pirates happy to Meet & Greet Malaysian fans

“I’m gonna run – run away with you!” A Royal Pirates fan belted out as she demonstrated just how big her love is for the Korean-America band.

Of course, the young lady did not mean it literally, she was only singing the lyrics to Royal Pirates’ “Run Away”, off their latest album, “3.3”.

The avid fan was rewarded with a Royal Pirates postcard from the emcee, same as several others who participated in the Q&A game while waiting for Royal Pirates’ "3.3" Meet the Fans Session to begin last Sunday, 6 November, at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur.

Royal Pirates, the Korean-American band consisting of lead vocalist/guitarist Moon (Kim Moon-chul), drummer EXSY (Kim Soo Yoon) and keyboardist/bassist James (James Lee), recently returned to Malaysia to meet with their fans.

The trio first visited the country in May last year, making this their second visit.

Fans bring along cute placards with the band members’
names to better catch their attention.

Though, unfortunately, this time around the band did not get to perform for their Malaysian fans.

This doesn’t mean their fans were any less excited to welcome them again, as apparent by the loud screaming as the band made their long-awaited appearance at the Meet the Fans session.

“We didn't expect to see so many people,” James said in awe, waving happily at the cheering crowd of more than a thousand fans gathered to meet the band.

After introducing themselves – not that they needed any introduction – to the still-screaming crowd, the three had a little Q&A session themselves with the emcee.

When asked what they missed most about Malaysia, the answer, “Our beautiful fans”, once again made the shopping mall shake with the screams of the ecstatic fangirls.

Royal Pirates seen here chilling onstage
while snapping a pic with the crowd.

“There’s three of us and this is our third album,” was Moon’s reply to the question why their album is called “3.3”, adding that they thought three was a perfect, there are also three points in a triangle, signifying balance, and they wanted to show the balance between the three of them.

The answer that received the most cheer on the day was no doubt when James revealed that the band will be performing at the year-end countdown concert in Malaysia this 31 December.

Moon promised that the band will give a different performance, something they have “never performed before”.

Since Royal Pirates’ recent visit to Malaysia was also to be the judges for Astro Star Quest, the band will be joining the finalists at the concert.

Royal Pirates watch their students Pang (far left in white) and Timothy (right, holding mic),
who previously flew to Korea to train with the band, perform a special stage for them.

Amidst the cheers from fans (“EXSY so sexy!” was just one the gems thrown around by fans, while the drummer simply acknowledged it with a shy smile), the trio went off stage for a short break before coming back up for the autograph session with fans who have purchased their “3.3” album at the concert.

A line of over 500 fans snaked through the venue as they waited for their turns to finally meet their “oppas” face to face.

So Royal Treasures, if you were were disappointed that the trio did not perform any songs last weekend, you now have the chance to catch the band again this year end! Keep your eyes glued to this spot for more upcoming deets.

In the meantime, enjoy more Royal Pirates photos from the event:

Check out Nik Qistina, Malaysia’s latest pop star!

Nik Qistina may seem like your everyday girl-next-door, except that she’s not!'

The 16-year-old is a talented singer-songwriter who started her singing career on YouTube, and was made famous from her Vine videos.

The young singer is a natural entertainer and her bubbly, friendly and down-to-earth personality has amassed her tens of thousands of followers on social media.

Not only does she have a lovable personality, she also has beautiful and solid vocals that managed to capture the attention of a major music label; Universal Music Malaysia.

After officially joining the Universal family in February, Nik Qistina had shared the stage with American golden boy Greyson Chance, performed at the renowned Istana Budaya in front of Malaysian pop queen Siti Nurhaliza, and opened for the “ONE: Championship Unbreakable Warriors” fight.

The young and talented Malaysian singer had released her debut single “Young Hearts” which received a roaring reception within a week, reaching 100,000 plays on Spotify and was charting in iTunes Top 100 in four countries across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Recently, TheHive.Asia managed to catch the fresh talent and had a friendly chat with her regarding her newfound career, future prospects and current goals in this industry. Read up!

Hi, Qistina, first of all, tell us about yourself and how did your music career first begin?
I started singing when I was 3-years-old. I used to perform in front of my family a lot, like they would ask me to sing, and then they would pay me! [laughs] But then I found that singing was really fun, and I loved doing it a lot. At first it was just a fun hobby, and then I started recording myself singing on Vine which allows only 6 seconds, but it wasn’t enough. So I started going on to Instagram, and then it started to hit off from there – people started to like my posts and then began to reach and inspire me to sing more, so I started to post a lot more covers on Instagram. Then, Universal Malaysia found me, they emailed me and we met up and talked about where I wanted to go in this industry and where my career is going to next. So I signed with them in February!

Who are some of your music inspirations?
If you listen to “Young Hearts”, you can hear a bit of Selena Gomez vibes, because I love her! There’s also Demi Lovato, Rihanna, Adele, Lady Gaga, and recently I’ve been loving Ariana Grande a lot too! Locally, the person that I look up to are Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and Sid Murshid, who is also an artiste under Universal.

In such a short time span after joining Universal, you've already performed at various places. How is the experience treating you so far?
It’s going amazing. I knew that when I stepped into Universal my life was going to change completely, and it did. I started having performances on weekends, and sometimes even weekdays after school! It’s amazing, it’s hectic, but it’s my passion, so I love it!

How do you balance music, school and everything else?
When I have exams, Universal doesn’t touch me, I’ll tell them that I have exams, so I need time to study, and they’re very understanding.

Tell us about your latest single, and inspiration behind the song.
The composer, lyricist and I sat down, and we actually talked about what I want the music to be like, and what direction I want it to go, and I told them that I wanted people and I to relate to it. The song has an amazing arrangement, and when I heard it, I fell in love completely. The song is actually inspired by Selena Gomez’s song “Sober” – that’s why I love it so much! Basically the song is about coming to a realisation that loving yourself first before anyone else is very important.

Will there be an album from you soon?
There’s going to be more singles first, and then there’s going to be an EP, and then an album.

What are you doing next?
For now, we’re going to focus on promoting “Young Hearts”, and I will also be performing a lot.

Apart from singing, what other things are you good at?
Sleeping. [laughs] I’m kidding! Well, I’m getting better in my studies, so I guess that’s good! I’m going to stay in school and finish my studies first, you have my word! [laughs]

Do you write or compose your own songs?
Yes, I do write, I started writing since last year. I already wrote about five songs now. All completed, but it’s not recorded officially in studios, or properly composed yet, because I want to learn it first -writing and composing. So yeah, I do write, but I'm still learning.

You’re Malay, but are you going to focus on singing in English, or will you be singing in Malay too?
My Malay single is coming out soon, which is like a mixed version of “Young Hearts” as it will be mixed in the Malay and English language. I’m going to release certain titles in Chinese as well, since I can speak Mandarin.

There are so many up and coming singers like you from YouTube and other social media platforms, how do you think you're going to survive in this industry, competing against other existing singers like Yuna, Elizabeth Tan, etc, and what sets you apart from other artistes?
I’m still new, and so far, everyone is being very nice to me. I don’t see them as competition, but more as an inspiration. I’m inspired to be like them, but better. So in my head, it’s not really a challenge for me, it’s an opportunity to be a better me, than I am now! Yes, there would be a new artist coming up every now and then, but I will try my best to always be in the line-up.

Malaysian badminton players Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong are now officially the new men's doubles World No 1!

After winning a silver medal at this year’s Rio Olympic Games, the duo have moved up the BWF (Badminton World Federation) world ranking on Thursday after South Korea’s Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong were removed from the list, New Straits Times reports.

“I am extremely happy because I only got to know about this when I checked the list this morning,” said Goh V Shem.

“We were hoping to end the year on a high, but I did not expect it to happen this soon, especially since we still have the China and Hong Kong Opens to play in. As for now, Wee Kiong and I will remain focused on maintaining our consistency and continue to give our best,” he added.

In the latest BWF ranking, V Shem-Wee Kiong had accumulated 71,297 points followed by China's Chai Biao-Hong Wei in second place with 70,220 while Danish pair Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen is in third with 67,534.

Back in August, the Malaysian pair almost won Malaysia's first ever Olympics gold medal with only two points away, but they ultimately lost to China's Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan in the final.

Japan’s “gluttonous beauty” takes on Sabahan food

Popular Japanese “gluttonous beauty” Yuri Ishizeki, or better known as Yurimori is currently in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and she has taken everyone by surprise after effortlessly gobbling up many local meals in a blink of an eye.

Ishizeki is known as a “food fighter” or big eater (in Japanese: Oogui), and is a popular Japanese pop culture figure who participates in Japan’s many champion competitive eating contests.

The 31-year-old food lover is also a make-up artist by profession and is currently on holiday in Sabah to taste some of the local cuisines and also visit some of the top attractions.

Also known as “Ramen Girl”, Ishizeki’s specialty food is ramen as she had once devoured 8kg worth of ramen within several minutes.

“I come from the interior of Japan which is very far from the sea. I feel like a movie star,” she said to Borneo Post.

Japanese competitive eating competitions are quite common in Japan and are sometimes viewed as a sort of sport as it requires a high amount of energy, precise agility and full concentration.

Yuri Ishizeki is one of the many “gluttonous beauties” in Japan, because despite eating a lot, they are able to maintain a slim and healthy figure.

The most famous Japanese gluttonous beauty is Yuka Kinoshita who took the world by storm after posting and uploading videos of her eating lots of food daily.

Poet, celebrated singer and songwriter, Leonard Cohen, had peacefully passed away today in his home at 82 years of age.

The devastating news was posted via his official Facebook account earlier today:-

“It is with profound sorrow, we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.”

According to Rolling Stone, Cohen’s son wrote in a statement that "my father passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles with the knowledge that he had completed what he felt was one of his greatest records.”

"He was writing up until his last moments with his unique brand of humor,” added Cohen’s son, Adam.

The talented artist has produced some of the best contemporary music with his unique lyric writing ability that combines spirituality and sexuality.

His timeless classics such as “Suzanne”, “Bird on a Wire,” “Everybody Knows”, and “I’m Your Man” will forever be etched in our hearts.

Even the ones who do not know Cohen would know his hit song “Hallelujah”, and such was the magnitude of Cohen’s ability that took the music world by storm.

Leonard Cohen’s fans and the music world will mourn the loss together with his family.

But maybe a fitting tribute to the passing of such an exceptional artist would rather be to celebrate his life than to mourn his passing.

When you’ve become a national hero, it’s only fitting that you have a concept train based on yourself!

Since winning the country its very first gold medal at the Olympics, Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling has been given an honorary membership of the Singapore Island Country Club, given free flights for life by AirAsia, and got a monetary bonus of SGD753,000 from Singapore for winning gold, the biggest Olympic bonus in the world – and he’s only 21!

To continue honouring the national idol, SMRT has launched the “Hello, My Name is Joseph Schooling” concept train, named after his book of the same name, featuring three cabins - The Pledge Cabin, The Book Cabin and The Exhibition Cabin.

Running until 8 December 2016, the Circle Line train reflects Schooling’s journey and is meant to serve as an inspiration for Singaporeans as the interior is decorated with motivational quotes and trivia, as well as images from Schooling’s recently published photo book, captured by veteran photographer Alvin Toh.

“When I first thought about the idea of producing this book, my main intention was to share the experience with everyday Singaporeans, hoping that what Joseph does, will inspire them. I am thankful for the support given by XCO and the other partners of the book as initiatives such as the concept train helps to bring the images to Singaporeans that travel daily on the train and hopefully, they will be inspired after looking at the images,” Toh said to Marketing Interactive.
