Malaysian songbird Yuna continues to make her home country proud!

The singer’s song “On Ghost Ridge” which was featured in a documentary on Native American rights titled “100 Years: One Woman’s Fight for Justice”, has been longlisted for the Best Original Song in 2017 Academy Awards a.k.a., The Oscars.

The song was written by Emmy award-winning composer Nicholas Pike and it was among the 91 songs longlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the 89th Academy Awards next year.

This isn’t the first time that Yuna’s song is longlisted for the Oscars. In 2014, her song “Shine Your Way”, which she performed together with American band Owl City for the movie, “The Croods” made the Best Original Song longlist but didn’t get shortlisted in the end.

The shortlist will be announced on 24 January 2017 while the main ceremony will take place on 26 February 2017.

On the other hand, Malay language film “Redha” by Tunku Mona Riza has been selected as Malaysia’s official entry to the Oscars this year, in hopes that it would get nominated under the Best Foreign Film category.

One lucky Malaysian Coldplay fan got more than what he bargained for when Chris Martin, the lead singer of the U.K. band invited him and his girlfriend up on stage for a proposal of a lifetime in Melbourne.

Initially planning to propose to his girlfriend during the concert, Faez Muhammad Taib was quick to proceed to the stage when Martin offered the stage to anyone who wished to use it as an opportunity to celebrate a special occasion.

Martin proceeded to welcome the couple and ‘borrowed’ the stage to Faez who proposed to his girlfriend, known only as Annuura, who of course accepted the proposal (who wouldn’t?).

The Instagram video with more than 50 thousand views has gone viral on social media platforms and it has been receiving mixed responses from netizens.

Well, living in an ardent Coldplay fan base area where 100 thousand tickets are soldwithin days, it is understandable that the masses envy these lucky couples.

Annuura took to twitter to exclaim her feelings where she posted: -
Faez also tweeted on the luckiest day of his lif-

But this would not be the first time that such a thing went viral as in 2011, Mohamad Khaidzir Aljunid surprised his would-be fiancée with a ring when Bruno Mars performed “Marry You”.

Now, who still thinks happy endings are only in fairy tales?

This year is truly a great year for Malaysian punk rock band Bunkface!

After their highly successful perfume business, the band plans to open the second outlet of the international restaurant chain, Miami Grill in Malaysia by early next year.

Miami Grill is a restaurant that specialises in Mexican-American meals such as pitas, fajitas, nachos, platters and more, and the restaurant chain belongs to the famous rapper, Pitbull.

The first Miami Grill outlet is located in Sunway Pyramid in Bandar Sunway.

According to New Straits Times, the reason why the boys decided to open a second outlet under their brand is because of their admiration for Pitbull and love for Mexican-American food.

“We visited the first Miami Grill which opened last January, and found it attractive because the spicy Mexican-American dishes appeal to young tastebuds including ours,” said Youk, bass guitarist of Bunkface.

The trio has formed a joint venture with businessman Razmi Alias to open the second Miami Grill outlet at Shah Alam Convention Center in early 2017, shortly after their 10th year anniversary concert.

“Bunkface believes in giving more than good music. Early this year we came up with our own perfume, Bunkface Perfume, and it’s been well-received by fans,” said Sam, lead singer of Bunkface.

Dyro shares his plan for Christmas and next year!

Dutch DJ and electro house producer, Dyro is one of the hottest names (and cutest faces!) in the EDM industry. You might have heard of him, having worked with established talents like Rihanna, Nick Romero, Tiesto, Hardwell and more.

After being discovered by Laidback Luke via a forum, Dyro whose real name is Jordy van Egmond, became one of the first artistes to sign to DJ Hardwell's recording label, Revealed Recordings.

Since then, his journey to the upper ranks of the electronic music scenes escalated quickly, from debuting at #30 in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, becoming the youngest artiste with the “Highest New Entry”, to finding his own independent label WOLV Records.

Recently, the 24-year-old DJ was in Malaysia on 8 December 2016 to perform at Fuze Club, Kuala Lumpur, just three months before making his debut at Zouk Club KL.

Find out what the young DJ has been up to and what his new plans are in our interview with him.

This is certainly not your first time in Malaysia, what makes you so attracted to the country?
I always have fun touring in Asia. The culture is very different to the one back in Europe but I feel at home when I visit here. The crowds in Malaysia are open-minded, and I always get a warm welcome.

Just wondering, is there a meaning behind the name Dyro?
I haven’t heard that question in a long time! [laughs] If you rearrange my first name ‘Jordy’, and remove the ‘J’ it makes ‘Dyro’.

You're quite young, and you got into this industry at the age of 18, what makes you think that this was the right choice back then?
I didn’t know it was the right choice. I just knew it was what I wanted to do. I worked hard to finish my studies because it was important to my parents who helped put me there, and then it was just music. I was lucky that early on in my career, I was able to release music on respected labels and play sets at big events, but I put in a lot of practice in my own time. Hard work always pays off.

If you weren't discovered the way you were early on in your career, do you think you'd still be a DJ today? If no, what would you be?
Yes, it may have just taken me a little longer! Or I’d like to think that I would have still worked in music, label managing or design, something like that.

There are so many famous EDM artistes as well as up and coming ones, what makes you stand out from the rest?
I’ve been working on new music, new press shots, planning for my new live dates in 2017 but also running my label WOLV and the artistes we sign. I feel like next year, people are going to see my vision more than ever before, which sets me apart from the rest, we just keep doing our own thing, not following trends. My music is unique, dark, and my new work is the best I’ve ever done.

To date, what is the highlight of your career?
Too many to mention! Playing on the main stage of ULTRA this year was pretty insane. We also hosted our own WOLV label party at ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) in October that we’d never done before, a highlight of this year!

What are you doing next?
I’m releasing new music in the second week of January, I hope everyone is ready!

What are your plans for Christmas?
I’ll be spending Christmas in Amsterdam with my loved ones and family. Oh, and I plan on eating enough food to get me through the winter! [laughs]

Amazon Prime Video, a Netflix like internet on-demand streaming platform has now gone global, with it expanding to more than 200 countries and territories.

The announcement caught everyone by surprise as such a big announcement was done in an ordinary manner much like Netflix who announced their expansion a year ago, also in similar fashion.

This was according to Variety, which reported that the service has expanded from developing markets to matured markets, as it spans from Southeast Asia to Africa and Western Europe.

Stating that they are “just starting”, Amazon’s executive, Tim Leslie said, “We are excited to announce that starting today; fans around the world would have access to Prime Video.”

Amazon also specified that Amazon Prime members in Belgium, Canada, France, India, Italy, and Spain could begin watching at no additional cost to their subscription.

But new customers can sign up at an introductory rate of USD 2.99 per month for the first six months, starting with a seven-day free trial.

Also, to further compete and cement their spot in the race to be the next on-demand streaming giant, Amazon is rolling out exclusive content such as Jeremy Clarkson’s (Top Gear) “The Grand Tour” which will be available in all 200 plus regions.

Other Amazon original series that are instantly available to subscribers include, “The Man in the High Castle,” “Transparent,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” and “Tumble Leaf” among others.

It still remains to be seen on how Netflix’s global dominance would be challenged by many recent players to the game, such as Malaysian based;  iflix, South East Asian venture; HOOQ and of course the very recent addition; Amazon Prime.

But it is undeniable that now is a good time for movie buffs and couch potatoes to never see daylight again for a very affordable price.

Russia to host Hunger Game-ish TV show where murder is allowed

New television survival show called “Game 2: Winter” is set to roll out soon where 30 contestants must survive in a bear and wolf infested Siberian ‘Taiga’ jungle during winter for USD 1.6 Million.

To win the game, the contestant needs to either survive for a 9-month period or find their way out from the jungle back to civilisation.

Other than battling the average 40 degree Celsius temperature, wild life and insects, participants might also need to battle among themselves as according to the organisers any crime such as killing, rape and murder is allowed on the show.

"This was according to Siberian times, which reported:-

“The TV show, called “Game2: Winter”, will see 30 male and female contestants seek to stay alive in wilderness populated with bears and wolves for nine months with the surviving receiving a $1.6m prize”.

But according to the organiser, a Russian entrepreneur named Yevgeny Pyatkovsky, the participants are still confined within the laws of Russian federation and hence any crime on the show would be prosecuted.
Yevgeny Pyatkovsky
Yes, we too have not figured out on how it is considered ‘allowed’ when you will still be arrested if you commit a crime during the show.
Siberian times also reported that contestants will be given a knife but not a gun - because battling bear and wolf with knives are easier, duh! - And will be given survival training from Russia's elite former military operatives to help them cope with the cold weather.
Bet this guy signed up already !
Well, as crazy as it seems, Yevgeny also told the news site that “60 people have already applied, including one American”.

To add on to its similarities with the Jennifer Lawrence starrer, viewers can ‘gift’ participants to aid them during the show.

The show will be streaming online for 24/7 and contestant would not be accompanied by any filming crew but the whole area will be dotted with cameras and each participant will be carrying a portable camera of their own.

One of the most isolated places in the world, Taiga.
However, -probably the only sane thing in the show- those who get into danger or cannot face the gruelling conditions can use a 'panic button' with a satellite connection and they will be safely escorted.

Now with all this being said, the qualification to join this show is very simple, you have to be at least 18 and mentally sane.

So, if you feel you want to embrace your inner Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mallark, you can definitely head on HERE to register yourself as participant.

May the odds be in your favour!
