Malaysia’s literary festival, the George Town Literary Festival has been shortlisted in the prestigious London Book Fair International Awards 2017 (LBFIA).

The Malaysian literary festival is one of the three shortlisted nominees for the Literary Festival Award alongside India’s Bookaroo Trust – Festival of Children’s Literature and South Africa’s Open Book Festival, Star2 reports.

Supported by the International Literary Showcase, LBFIA is opened to any literary event outside Britain which celebrates literary festivals that demonstrate varied programming, high-quality organisation, care and attention to authors, diverse appeal, and a connection with the local community.

“The GTLF is indebted to the support from its partners, participants, and festival audiences who continue to believe in the necessity and urgency of free speech and expression,” said GTLF festival director Bernice Chauly to the local news portal.

GTLF is an annual festival which takes place in the city of George Town, Penang, Malaysia, and it is the only literary festival in Malaysia which celebrates the literary world of poetry, prose, spoken words, while also hosting various writers, novelists, spoken word artists and more from diverse writing disciplines.

“I am delighted that the shortlist is truly global, with all five continents represented. The strength and breadth of the entrants on this list is impressive, and is a testament to the passion, commitment and creativity of all those involved in publishing, selling and bringing books to a wider audience,” said Jacks Thomas, director of the London Book Fair during the shortlist announcement.

The 2017 London Book Fair International Awards will take place on 14 March 2017, in London.

As many would have guessed, Adele is the big winner of of the 2017 Grammy Awards, taking home the three main awards; Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year at the 59th annual Grammy Awards

Adele however, felt that the Album of the Year award should have been given to Beyoncé instead of her.

"I can't possibly accept this award," said the 28-year-old singer during her speech acceptance award.

"We all got to see another side to you that you don't always let us see and we appreciate that and all us artists here adore you. You are our light and the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering and you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have, and I always will."

Megadeth wins their first Grammy in the most awkward moment of all

While Adele had won all the huge awards at the Grammys, heavy metal outfit Megadeth had also won their first ever Grammy award after eleven nominations since 1993.

The thrash metal band took home the award for Best Metal Performance for their 2016 album “Dystopia” at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

However, in a somewhat awkward turn of events, the Grammy house band played Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” as Megadeth walked down the aisle to accept their award on stage.

Thankfully, Megadeth’s lead singer Dave Mustaine who was the original lead guitarist and one of the founding members of Metallica, didn’t seem to mind it at all as he walked down the aisle while playing air-guitar to the classic song.

Check out the awkward moment!

Unique DIY bouquets for Valentine’s Day

$

Valentine’s Day is all about love and nothing else, so as long the gift that you’re about to present to your partners is filled with your love – that’s all that matters.

On Valentine’s Day, it is common courtesy for one to give their partners beautiful bouquets, cute teddy bears or lots and lots of chocolates, but sometimes, these kinds of gifts are a bit too common and in time, they may get boring.

Although some are still suckers for these cheesy presents, it is nice for the gifter to once in a while get really creative by giving their significant others (SO) something out of the ordinary!

We’ve seen a bouquet of chocolates, or a bouquet of cute plushies before, and those are certainly something slightly different than the usual box of chocolates, but here, we would like to suggest something even more unusual for you to offer to your SO, and it can also be an alternative for those who are allergic to flowers!

1.Chicken nuggets
This bouquet is definitely easy to make and delicious too, and it doesn’t really cost much. But of course, not everyone likes eating oily food, so make sure that your partner really likes their fast food before presenting them with the bouquet.

2.Fried chickens
Another alternative of chicken nuggets! Of course, you can also have them made with other fast food items like sausages, bacons, hams, meatballs and others. This is what we call dinner on a bouquet!

3.Assorted chocolates and candies
Giving chocolates on Valentine’s Day is quite normal, especially if it’s Cadbury or Ferrero Rocher. But if you can’t afford those kinds of fancy brands, why not mix up some of your partner's favourite candy brands.

4.Make-up set
Forget chocolates and teddy bears, this bouquet would definitely melt most girls’ hearts! But before you DIY this make-up bouquet, make sure you know your girlfriend’s skin type, sensitivity, and preference because some girls can be very particular with what they put on their faces.

5.Fruits
If your SO are the healthy type of person, a fruit bouquet will do the trick! However, since fruits are quite heavy, make sure to make the bouquet smaller so that it is easier for your partner to hold it – or you can just be THE man and hold it for your SO!

6.Origami flowers
Though flowers may be overrated, handmade paper flowers are a different case. Because this shows the effort and love you put into a single bouquet, and the flowers will last forever too. Of course, mastering origami is not easy, so better start learning soon!

7.Cupcakes
What other stuff do girls love beside sweet and cute things? A mashup of both of course, and that spells cute cupcakes! If your girl has a sweet tooth, give her a bouquet of adorable cupcakes as it is definitely a whole lot more special than the normal chocolate bouquet.

8.Donuts
An alternative of the cupcakes bouquet which is a lot easier to make, and much more colourful too! Mix up various flavours of your partner’s favourite donuts and present it to him or her in bouquet form!

Malaysian pop punk outfit An Honest Mistake (AHM) is spreading love in the air via their new music video, “Everything” featuring Filipina beauty Juliann Savard, or better known as Julz Savard, lead singer of Filipino band, Save Me Hollywood.

The song was a remake of AHM’s 2015 song of the same name featuring Malaysian songbird Daiyan Trisha, which was also released during Valentine’s Day.

“This song is one that is really personal to me. It is about falling in love and wanting to be the ONLY ONE for her; loving everything about her. If I could be anything, I wanted to be her everything and she; my EVERYTHING,” said lead singer Darren when he first wrote the song.

Also, the storyline of the video seems to be the continuation of their previous music video, “We’re Alright” which first featured the special appearance of Julz.

AHM’s “Everything” featuring Julz Savard is now already available on Spotify.

Apple releases trailer for its first TV content, “Planet of the Apps”

Tech giant Apple is breaking into TV content and has already released the first trailer of its upcoming reality TV series, “Planet of the Apps”, which is like a mix of “Shark Tank” and “The Voice”.

The show will have developers and entrepreneurs pitch their ideas for apps, choose a celebrity mentor, and eventually win USD10 million in funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners as well as premium placement on the front page of Apple’s App Store.

The four celebrity judges for the show include actress and Honest Company co-founder Jessica Alba, Black Eyed Peas frontman and entrepreneur will.i.am, actress and founder of lifestyle brand Goop Gwyneth Paltrow, and VaynerMedia CEO Gary Vaynerchuk.

Instead of an elevator pitch, those competing on the show make an “escalator pitch”, as their pitch will literally takes place on a moving escalator, and they have only 60 seconds to sell their ideas!

If their pitch is selected, the developer will partner with one of the judges who will act as an adviser on the project.

Based on the trailer, tech companies like Yelp and Uber are also going to help the teams with some guidance.

Though the general idea of the show seems great, Apple fans and employees don’t seem to be impressed by the trailer, Business Insider reports.

“Planet of the Apps” will air exclusively on Apple Music sometime this year.

In other news, Apple will also create “Carpool Karaoke: The Series”, a spin-off of the popular segment of the same name from “The Late Late Show with James Corden”, set to premiere in April.

Previously we have reported that former bubbletea brand Chatime Malaysia, has been renamed as "Tea is Our Life", but today we found out that the official name of the brand will be "Tealive".

After much dispute that's been going on since last month, Loob Holding CEO Bryan Loo finally bounces back and is ready to move on with his new bubbletea brand.

"We wanted a new name that not only would appeal to Malaysians, but across the other regions and the whole world. So we felt like we had to find a very good name; and it had to be different from Chatime," Loo told Malaysia Tatler.

"We started with over 300 names and over three days, we shortlisted it down to 30 names and then the last one. In the end, we wanted a name that was simple and easy to digest no matter who you are," he continued.

According to Loo, the mission of Tealive will be different from Chatime as they want to be "the brand that protects the weak and isn’t afraid of the strong; but also the brand that embraces changes."

In conjunction with its launch, which took place today, Tealive will be offering a Buy-1-Free 1 promotion for any drink, starting from tomorrow 18 February onwards.

Sheila Majid: “Stop building malls, we need more music venues!”

Although she is planning to have a small showcase upon the release of her new album this year, Malaysian songstress Dato’ Sheila Majid has voiced her concerns over the lack of music venues in the country.

“We don’t have a lot of proper venues which are suitable for live performances. For me, the most important element of a live music venue is a good sound system and not just the stage decoration!,” said the singer when met at the St. Regis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Dato’ Sheila who has been given the “Malaysia's Queen of Jazz” title lamented on the association of live music with night clubs and alcohol, which she believes has tainted the perception of music showcases and performers.

“Why must we depend on places like these for showcases? Why can’t we build more halls, have shows at 8.30pm to 10.30pm instead of 11pm to 1pm because that’s the time when most of us are already sleepy, and also a show without alcohol,” said the recent recipient of the AIM 22 Anugerah Sri Wirama.

“That way, children, adults and seniors can also enjoy a good, clean show together with their family,” she continued.

“Stop building shopping malls, we have no money to spend anyway!,” remarked the singer. “We need more platforms for young artistes to showcase their skills!”

Dato' Sheila Majid is the brand ambassador of HOYA.

The singer touched on the topic when mentioning that she has yet to choose a venue for her upcoming showcase, for which she would most probably pick the National Stadium.

However, as the stadium is still under renovation, she says that the Istana Budaya would also be a good choice but not without some much needed revamp.

The 51-year-old singer recently celebrated her 30th anniversary in Singapore and Indonesia with grand shows, but had to exclude Malaysia from the celebration due to the absence of sponsors and the country’s weak economic state.

Even though the iconic singer is the face of many brands including her new role as ambassador for the Japanese optical company HOYA, she says looking for someone to sponsor her full-fledged concert is a much bigger responsibility to take rather than just assigning her to their brand.

“My fans have really high expectations of me, so if I’m just going to come out with a glamorised dinner show and call that a concert, do you think my fans will be satisfied? It has to be of concert quality!,” she explained.

However, the singer says she is closing the book on having a 30th anniversary concert in Malaysia once and for all as she wants to focus on her new album which will be released this year.

Not many details on the album had been revealed, but according to the singer, it is already in the mixing and mastering stage.

In the meantime, Dato’ Sheila also shared that she recently took a five-hour master class with Seth Riggs and his wife Margarita, the vocal trainers for famous singers like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder and more.
