Pop punk princess Avril Lavigne is certainly no stranger in Japan, in fact, she is a huge fan of the country, and now, she will forever have a special connection there, as her sister Michelle Lavigne (now Michelle Kohama) has just gotten married to rock star Ryota Kohama, the bassist of famous J-rock band ONE OK ROCK.

Avril and Michelle sure look like twins when they both have the same smoky eye makeup.
The only difference is, Avril is shorter!

The news has surprised many of Avril’s fans, especially her Japanese fans after she shared a photo of her sister with the bassist on her social media with the caption, “Congrats to my little sister Michelle and Ryota on their marriage. Wishing you both all the love and happiness in the world!”

Avril has crossed paths with ONE OK ROCK several times. In 2013, they both appeared on the same Japanese music TV show, and met up again when the Japanese band performed in Canada last year.

Avril met ONE OK ROCK members for the first time in 2013.
(Photo sourcr: sonymusic.co.jp)

She was even recently featured in one of the band’s single, “Listen” from their eighth studio album, “Ambitions” which was released last month.

Avril Lavigne is a huge star in Japan and of course, she too loves the country.

She released a J-pop dubstep song titled “Hello Kitty” in 2014 as a tribute to the Japanese culture and fans, and it also represents her obsession with Hello Kitty.

Though the song was generally panned by music critics, being labelled as racist and offensive to some, most of her Japanese fans loved it and didn’t seem to care about the minor details in the music video.

Avril also contributed two cover songs to the Japanese animated film “One Piece Film: Z” including Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” and Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation”.

This rock band from Mexico is called Koala Lumpur!

Remember two years ago, we found that there’s actually a French band named Mutiara Damansara and everyone got super excited?

Well you may or may not know this, but apparently there’s an alternative rock band from Mexico who called themselves “Koala Lumpur”.

The name is obviously a play on the word “Kuala Lumpur” which is Malaysia’s capital city, but one user from GAGS Malaysia has also noted that the name could be taken from a video game called, “Koala Lumpur: Journey to the Edge”.

It is not known why the band picked the name, but several excited Malaysians have already started to leave comments on the band’s official Facebook page.

If you're wondering what the band sounds like, imagine the soothing vocals of Joshua Radin accompanied by the harmonious riffs of your favourite alternative/progressive rock bands like Porcupine Tree or even the instrumentally monumental band like Mogwai.

There is definitely an element of melancholia that can be derived from the music that is very atmospheric in nature.

Consisting of members Julio Odz, Francisco B Fuentes, JP González and Ram, Koala Lumpur was formed in 2014 and has performed at big festivals in Mexico like Wine Colors Music Fest and Festival Ajusco.

Aragan Yokocho, largest Japanese restaurant opens in Malaysia

A new Japanese restaurant will soon open its doors for Malaysians this coming March, and it is unlike any other that you have ever seen (and eaten at).

Touted as the first and largest authentic Japanese restaurant in Asia with 18,848 sq ft, Aragan Yokocho has a Japanese Boutique Cuisine theme with the four seasons’ concept and ten service restaurants under one roof.

The sushi counter where the sushi is freshly served.

The sake counter for Japanese wine lovers.

The siting area from one of the four seasons.

This first-of-its kind restaurant is like a food court meets street food concept with traditional Japan ambience, inspired by the late Showa era or early Heisei era of the 80s, and the name “Aragan” is taken from the Aragan Group of Japan while “Yokocho” simply means “small street”.

The restaurant is also the sister company of Japanese gift shop, Hinode which is also under the Aragan Group.

What’s unique about this place is that the seating areas are separated into their own themes following the four seasons’; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

It also has 10 authentic Japanese food stations for customers to choose from.

The Autumn area.

The Winter area.

There are also private booths.

Featuring more than 200 types of pork-free Japanese food, all of the dishes are priced reasonably, ranging from RM15 to RM40, and each of them comes in very generous portions as well.

Even though the place is arranged in a food court-like manner, customers do not have to go to each station to order their food, as each of the tables in the restaurant will be provided with a tablet for an easy ordering process, similar to Sakae Sushi.

Some of the Japanese food stations in the restaurant.

Customers can order food and drinks from the tablet.

Also, if your food happens to arrive late, customers can request for a free dessert for compensation.

There is also a station for customers to try out the traditional Yukata and take pictures for keepsakes.

Female yukatas.

Male yukatas.

The restaurant recently had its soft opening on 13 February and will be officially open on 1 March 2017 at Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from Quill City Mall, the restaurant plans to open a second outlet in Sunway Velocity Mall on either May or June this year, and then Singapore next year.

TheHive.Asia was invited to sample some of the restaurant’s dishes and we have to say that we’re really satisfied with the food served, especially the Syouyu Hiyashi Chuka (cold ramen with soy sauce) which we recommend the most!

There's a typo there, the food is actually called Nigiri Moriawase from Sushi Kuniyoshi food stall, and the food is a platter of seven nigiri sushi.

"Kamameshi" literally means "kettle rice", sort of like the Japanese version of claypot rice, while "kaki" means Oyster. The food is from the Komeichi stall.

From Hodori food stall, Tai Kamayaki which is grilled salmon head is one of the restaurant's specialty dishes.
A platter of prawn, scallop, green perilla leaves, okra (ladies' finger), and long eggplant fried in tempura style. The food is from the Hifumi stall.

Chikin Nanban is from the Kushi Hakkei stall, and it is basically chicken thigh with tartar sauce.

From Haikara stall, a sukiyaki (hot pot) of chicken, vegetable, mushroom, tofu, and fresh egg from Japan.

Chicken with beansprouts and golden mushroom served with teriyaki sauce, from the Peko-Peko stall.

Cold ramen with soy sauce from Noodle 365, and our favourite one yet!

2017 is the year of major comebacks as some of the biggest names which we have not heard for quite a while are making a comeback to the mainstream industry!

Sometimes, after reaching a certain height in music and stardom, artistes and musician need to take a break from being in the spotlight, so they go on an unknowingly long hiatus, making fans wonder whether they will be gone for good or will they make a return.

London-based Japanese noise rock band Bo Ningen is coming to Malaysia for the first time.

The band is made of members Taigen Kawabe on vocals and bass, Yuki Tsujii and Kohhei Matsuda which are both on guitars, and Monchan Monna on drums.

Though the members come from Gumma, Tajimi, Nishinomiya, and Tokyo, they met each other in London and formed the band there in 2006.

Their band name literally means “stick man” in Japanese, and according to an interview with Akaitaiyou no Nihon, it is because all of the members are very skinny.

The band has been playing shows and festivals throughout the UK, Europe and Japan, but their most notable one was the 2011 Venice Biennale which was re-created for Yoko Ono's Meltdown Festival at Royal Festival Hall.

Bo Ningen will be performing in Malaysia on 25 March 2017 at the newly renovated The Bee at Publika.

Early bird tickets will be sold at RM88 while pre-sale price will be at RM108.

A new kind of partying is coming to town and there’s a little twist to it as well!

Ever heard of silent disco? Well, it an event where people dance around to music, that’s listened to through wireless headsets.

Rather than using a traditional speaker system, music is broadcast via a radio transmitter with the signal picked up by the wireless headphones worn by the partiers, and thanks to multiple transmitters, you can choose and change the music you are listening to.

So basically, Malaysia will soon have its very first silent disco, but what is the twist? Unlike every other silent disco, this one will take place inside a hot air balloon and it will be the first of its kind in the world.

Hosted by the team behind Helipad Cinema in collaboration with My Balloon Fiesta, one of the hot air balloons is now set to be transformed into a one-of-a-kind silent disco arena!

Taking place from 10 to 12 March 2017, the event will be held at Desa Park City, inside one of the hot air balloons at My Balloon Fiesta.

So make sure to find the one hot air balloon that has been turned to its side at the venue.

The hot air balloon limited is to 50 pax per session, and each silent disco partier can jive, jig and sing for the entire hour session.

The pre-sale ticket costs RM20 inclusive of entry into the Silent Disco Balloon arena and wireless headset rental, while the door-sale costs RM25 per person.

Tickets can be purchased via bit.ly/myballoonfiestasilentdisco.
