As the gaming industry in Malaysia is starting to gain more and more prominence thanks to the marvellous performances from several Malaysian teams at the international competition level, an academy which is set to develop professional gamers has been created, and it is the first of its kind in Malaysia!

Malaysia's eSports governing body, eSports Malaysia (ESM) has teamed up with local university, Asia Pacific University (APU), to set up the country’s first ever eSports Academy called APU eSports Malaysia Academy, a platform for those wanting to contribute to the competitive gaming scene.

“eSports is an uprising trend that APU embraces and we highly encourage our students to participate in healthy competitive gaming,” said Datuk Dr. Parmjit Singh, CEO of APIIT Education Group as quoted by Garena.

“APU eSports Club have been actively hosting nationwide tournaments including the League of Legends Malaysia Campus League (MYCL) Grand Finals. In return, our students have also represented APU and Malaysia at various international competitions such as the League of Legends International Collegiate Championship (LICC) in Taiwan,” he said.

Located in Bukit Jalil, APU is the first educational institution to feature an e-sports course, and it will be guided by professionals on the basics of four popular e-sports titles; “League of Legends”, “Dota 2”, “Counter Strike: Global Offensive” and “FIFA Online 3”.

Courses are slated to start by the first week of April with classes to take place during the weekends.

With all the Chatime fiasco that’s been going on in Malaysia for the past few weeks, franchise owner La Kaffa International has decided to appoint Will Group Sdn Bhd as the new master licensor of Chatime Malaysia.

After much dispute between La Kaffa and former master franchisee Loob Holding, CEO Bryan Loo has proceeded to create how own bubble tea brand known as Tealive, replacing all 165 Chatime outlets throughout Malaysia, leaving only 4 Chatime stores in the country.

Apart from announcing their new collaborator, La Kaffa also plans to open 30 new Chatime outlets over the next six months, with an additional 40 by mid-2018.

“We have had a very good understanding of Will Group’s capabilities over the last five years as it has performed extremely well as a Chatime sub-franchisee in Malaysia; in fact, two of the highest earning outlets were operated by them,” said La Kaffa chairman Henry Wang.

“High degree of dedication and prudent business operations make Will Group an ideal entity to enhance our partnership with. By working closely with Will Group, we hope to grow the revenue of Chatime Malaysia to eventually account for about 10 percent for the group in the next few years.”

Taiwanese bubble tea Chatime aims to maintain its position as the number one bubble tea brand in the Malaysian market, going against Bryan Loo’s Tealive which they view as just another competitor.

Miss Malaysia World 2016 Tatiana Kumar has been stripped off her title by the Miss Malaysia World organisation due to several alleged “offensive” comments that she posted online.

The organisers made the announcement via Miss Malaysia World’s official Instagram on Monday, 6 March 2017, which was signed in the name of former National Director and Licensee for Miss Malaysia World 2016, Dato’ Anna Lin.

“It has come to our attention that there is a breach of our Code of Conduct and contract by the reigning Miss Malaysia World 2016 Tatiana Kumar. We wish to announce that, after due consideration, with effect 6/3/17, Ms Tatiana Nandha Kumar will no longer be the title holder for Miss Malaysia World 2016. We are also pleased to announce that Ms Shweta Sekhon (previously 1st runner-up) will now be the winner of Miss Malaysia World 2016/17. Thank you,” read the post.

Lin told The Star that Tatiana and her family had made several offensive posts on both the Internet and social media regarding the Miss Malaysia World organisation.

“There are certain formalities, and she has also breached one involving an important sponsor. This has led to the contract being terminated,” said the former National Director of Miss World Malaysia.

However, Tatiana Kumar has responded a reply on her Facebook page, denying that she has breached the agreement or Code of Conduct.

"The termination of the Agreement and the removal of my title are wrongful and wholly unjustified, as I have certainly not breached the Agreement or any so-called Code of Conduct. More importantly, the allegations made against me are wholly false and unacceptable. I am very upset and disappointed with these allegations as I have conducted myself with utmost professionalism as Miss Malaysia World 2016 to-date," read the post.

18-year-old Tatiana who is a French-Malaysian model, was crowned Miss Malaysia World in August 2016, and represented the country in the international Miss World in Maryland, U.S. in December.

Now, 19-year-old Shweta Sekhon, who is the previous first runner-up, has become the new Miss Malaysia World 2016/17.

Back in December during the Miss World pageant in U.S, there has supposedly been some drama brewing between Tatiana and the Miss World Organisation.

The 18-year-old said that she had no access to post on the official Miss World Malaysia page, making her unable to participate in the Miss World Multimedia challenge where contestants need to score points by interacting on their social media sites to create engagement with fans.

Various complaints from fans have been flooding the page, expressing concerns regarding the issue, but all of them had soon been removed from the page.

Namewee’s song featuring Wang Leehom breaks a million views in 2 days

Malaysia’s multitalented artiste, Namewee, has collaborated with Asia’s top superstar Wang Leehom for his latest song titled “Stranger in the North”.

The music video for the song was released on YouTube last Saturday, 4 March, and has already garnered more than 1.2 million views.

The music video reached 1 million views in a mere two days, breaking Namewee’s personal record for the fastest music video to reach a million views, surpassing his protégé Joyce Chu’s music video for “I Miss You” which reached a million views in two and a half days.

After losing to Wang Leehom over the theme song of the Sino-Hollywood production “The Great Wall”, Namewee decided to approach Wang for a song collaboration.

The 33-year-old talent didn’t think that the Chinese-American singer would agree to the collaboration so quick after he sent him the demo of the song.

“I'm very thankful to Asian Pop King Wang Leehom for his strong support. I didn't expect that he would agree to the collaboration and I'm very touched by it. It is surprising how passionate he is towards music and he gave me a lot of valuable advice too,” Namewee posted on his Facebook.

Produced and composed by Namewee, the song describes the life of migrant workers in Beijing which sort of reflects Namewee’s life as well, as he himself is struggling to make a name in a foreign country too.

KOI, another famous Taiwanese bubble tea is coming to Malaysia

While Chatime and Tealive are about to have a bubble tea war, another competitor is coming to town and will (probably) be joining in the fight as well (as far as friendly competition goes).

Taiwanese bubble tea brand, KOI Thé or KOI Café will be entering the Malaysian market for the first time.

KOI Café is an original tea shop from Taiwan by 50嵐(“50 Lan”), the most dominant tea shop chain in Taiwan with over 500 outlets across the country.

The bubble tea brand is currently present in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia.

KOI is wildly popular in Singapore (like how Chatime is a favourite in Malaysia), as it has 40 outlets across the country, and will be hitting their 10th anniversary in Singapore this year.

The first KOI Thé outlet in Malaysia will soon open in One Utama Shopping Mall, LG level, New Wing.

No words on the opening dates yet, but stay tuned to KOI Thé Malaysia for more updates.

Nike to launch a sports hijab line for Muslim women athletes

Nike plans to launch a new line of sports hijab wear for Muslim female athletes early next year, becoming the first major sports apparel maker to offer a traditional Islamic head scarf designed specifically for competition.

Marketed under the “Nike Pro Hijab”, the head cover is a single-layer pull-on design made from lightweight polyester in dark, neutral colours. It is designed to allow athletes to be heedful of the traditional Islamic practice of covering the head without affecting their performance.

Sporting hijabs have been around for several years, but Nike is the first major international company to embrace the sports needs of Muslim women.

“The Nike Pro Hijab may have been more than a year in the making, but its impetus can be traced much further back, to an ongoing cultural shift that has seen more women than ever embracing sport,” Nike said in a statement.

Other smaller sporting brands such as Capsters and ResportOn have previously been seen as leading brands of sporting hijabs.

Nike started developing the hijab after some Muslim athletes complained about wearing a traditional head scarf during competition.

The Pro Hijab is the result of a year-long collaborative process between Nike and top female Muslim athletes, such as weightlifter Amna Al Haddad and figure skater Zahra Lari.

“I was thrilled and a bit emotional to see Nike prototyping a Hijab,” Lari said in a statement obtained by CNN.

“I’ve tried so many different hijabs for performance, and ... so few of them actually work for me. But once I put it on and took it for a spin on the ice, I was blown away by the fit and the light weight,” she continued.

The hijab will be available in three initial colours, black, grey and obsidian and will be available in the market in early 2018.

Join us on a "Second Date" with Paperplane Pursuit!

Malaysian pop band Paperplane Pursuit will be releasing the music video of their latest single “Internet Celebrity” by the end of this month, followed by their debut album “Second Date” slated for a release in April.

Though the band may have officially made their debut in 2009, they have been in the industry way longer than that (more than a decade), but you probably didn't know this as they went by a different name, Silent Scream, a band that was well-known for their emo-centric music.

Nowadays, Paperplane Pursuit is known for their radio friendly tunes, with catchy hooks and infectious sing-along melodies like “Beat of Your Love”, “Feel Good” and “Who’s Gonna Stop Me”, which all enjoyed success on mainstream Malaysian radio stations.

Their song “Feel Good” broke into the US Billboard Mainstream Top 40 Indicator Charts in September 2015, topping famous international artistes like Maroon 5 and Adam Lambert, and the song remained on the charts for seven weeks.

Being entirely self-funded, self-managed, and with no label backing, the band is independent in so many ways as they write, produce and record their music all on their own, including their music videos.

TheHive.Asia recently had a “second date” with the guys (geddit?) where they talked about their new album, their upcoming single, “Internet Celebrity”, and some other juicy details that you might not know about them.

But before you read the interview, here’s a brief introduction of the band!

  • Paperplane Pursuit is made up of John O on vocals, Isaac Ravi on guitars, Dru Yap on drums, and The Chief on bass. Dru and John went to school together, formed a band when they were 14 and have played music together ever since.
  • The band went through several name changes (like Silent Scream) and different line-ups over the years. In 2009, Paperplane Pursuit was born.
  • John asked his childhood church buddy Isaac to play guitar for the band, and he officially joined the band in 2011.
  • The Chief initially started off as John’s studio intern in 2012, and paid his dues helping out with the recording and production of the band’s music. He eventually transitioned into the role of the band’s bassist, officially completing the band’s line-up in 2017.

(L-R) Dru Yap, John O, Isaac Ravi, and The Chief

Give us some insight on your debut album, "Second Date". How are the songs different from your previous two EPs, and why the name? What happened to "First Date"?

John: We look at it as everything that we released so far is the first date. It was the chance where everybody get to know us like the first impression of what people think we’re about. So this album is the chance to get to know us better, that’s why it’s called the “Second Date”.

I think a lot of the songs have a similar vibe with the previous songs, like they're very catchy and friendly, but they are slightly more mature as well, and a lot of the songs are very lyrically-driven. The lyrics would be the highlight for the album as it will make people think and feel.

In your previous EP, you collaborated with Darren Ashley on “Beat of Your Love”, did you collaborate with any artistes on this album? Any plans in the pipeline?

John: In this album, no. But we might be collaborating with someone outside of the country for the deluxe version of the album, but that is still under wraps, so we can’t reveal any details yet.

Isaac: So we will release “Second Date” in April, but we might release another two or three songs after the album and include them in the deluxe version.

Describe how did the song “Internet Celebrity” come about?

John: I was at a wedding, and my relative came up to me and said that her daughter wanted to meet me and she’s a huge fan. I like kids, so I met her and she was very excited to see me.  So this little girl asked me “How can I be famous?” so I was quite surprise by the question especially coming from a young kid, and that got me thinking about the world these days.

I mean when I was a kid I definitely had dreams about becoming a rock star, but the point was making music or travelling, and it is not to be famous. But that’s the thing with the new generation now, they want to be famous and internet is the easiest way to do it.

So the song was largely inspired by that, like the effect of internet fame and social media, and how it influences me and also the effect that it has on society.

How do you view the whole “internet fame” phenomenon, do you see it as something negative?

John: Before pointing the finger at anybody else, to be very honest a lot of the lyrics came about from my personal experience. I’ve been on social media for the longest time because I spend a lot of time online, and I didn’t like the effect of social media on me. It makes me compare myself with other people, and you start focusing a lot on appearances like what people see on the surface rather than what’s goes on beneath. So I didn’t like that for myself, and I think a lot of people are facing that issue.

Even a lot of the real internet celebrities that we met feel that way too. We’re putting out our music video later this month, and we do have a lot of internet celebrities in the music video. Even they were saying that the song really resonates with them, like they’re not really happy with a lot of stuff that they do, but it’s part of their job.

So I think that there’s good and bad, but it’s not my place to tell people that they shouldn’t be an internet celebrity. People can make it good or bad depending on how they use it and for what purpose. But for me, the song is like a wake-up call for people like me.

What was it like working with The Ming Thing on the music video?

Isaac: We’re actually friends with them. We’ve known them for a while and we previously played at a couple of shows together. So, when we were discussing about who should we get for the music video of “Internet Celebrity”, they were kind of the obvious people to ask because they are internet celebrities, and we like what they do, and they are our friends.

John: We’ve always wanted to do something together but we never had the chance before this. So we spoke to Ming Han and he agreed to work with us almost immediately.

Isaac: They were very nice and it was very easy to work with them. We actually ended up getting more shots than we needed. We have too many shots – enough to make two different music videos in fact!

I understand that you guys have gone through several band name and line-up changes, so what contributed to who you are today – like in terms of your image and music style?

John: Dru and I have been in a band since forever, I think since we were 14-years-old.  And we came to a point where we were known as the band that makes emo songs. A friend of ours who’s been managing us for a while, said to us, “You guys should just accept that you are like The Script of Malaysia, you always make these sappy songs that everybody loves to cry to.” So that sounded like a personal challenge to me, and I wanted to prove that we can also do happier, fun and upbeat songs.

So I think where we are now, especially in this album, is like a combination of the band back then and now. There are emotional songs in the album as well, and there are also those happy and upbeat songs that everybody knows us for. Because all of us, as people – have both side to us. We’re very retrospective and thoughtful, but at the same time, we like to have fun and we don’t take ourselves very seriously. So I think our personalities have probably shaped the image and sound of the band.

Since you guys have been in the industry for quite some time, do you have any plans on signing to a major label?

John: It’s not that we don’t want to, we’re just waiting for the right deal and offer. The music industry now is different from where it was in the past, but labels still do perform as an important function. It’s just a question of the right label, time and relationship. We’re not a band that’s happy to just sit back and let people take over our career. So we need the right partner that sees us on equal footing, rather than letting them manage everything. So we’re waiting for that right relationship.

Isaac: Even if it doesn’t happen, that’s also okay because even if we don’t have a label we can still make music on our own. If there is a right partner and label, then that’s great, but we’re okay even if we don’t have them.  Not having a label doesn’t mean that you can’t have a music career because nowadays, artistes can do everything by themselves, thanks to the internet.

What do you think about the Malaysian music industry today?

John: We come from a position of the time when local stars were the norm. Now, people look at us as one of the few local English bands that are doing well. But when me and Dru were in school together, there were so many local acts that we worshiped. The ultimate heroes were always the local heroes like Butterfingers, Too Phat, Innuendo, OAG, etc – that was the norm. That also shaped our dream to do music and be local stars first before anything else.

Then it felt like we went through this sort of dry spell when there was nothing much, especially in the English scene, it became like a desert landscape and nothing was happening. But I feel that now, the opposite trend is starting again. It is sort of a repetition of what we saw when we were young, so many cool stuff coming out from the local scene, and the fact that the media is also picking up on it, is very exciting. A lot of local radio stations are actively looking for local acts to play, so I feel like we are on the verge of a nice explosion of a music scene and I'm very excited for it.

How do you guys feel when people tell you that Paperplane Pursuit doesn’t sound local?

John: We know people mean it as a compliment, but…

Isaac: It also points out to something that’s not so great. It is a compliment; people are basically saying that our music sounds good.

John: And we appreciate the good intention!

Isaac: But the fact that people say it that way, indicates that there’s also an impression that local music doesn’t normally sound good. So, it’s great that we sound good, but we wish that there would be other people who are also spearheading it with us, so that it becomes a normal thing for Malaysians to feel that local music can sound good too.

But it has become more normal nowadays. Initially with the first few songs, it was more common to get that kind of compliments. But now there are more Malaysian artistes who are also upping their game.

John: I think it is coming. We don’t think that we are very special. There are bands that are much better than us in Malaysia; artistes of every genre are doing stuff way more exciting than us. Our goal is not to be the big fish in the pond, our goal is that there is a nice pool of fish where everybody is rising together, and that’s happening.

Any plans of releasing songs in other languages soon?

John: We’ve actually released two Malay songs before under our first EP “Malaysian 2.0”, but that was a long time ago, and I don’t think that we will be releasing another Malay song in the near future.

Why is that?

Isaac: One thing that we’ve learned is that it takes a different mind-set and style to write a Malay song. It’s hard to do both, and we feel what’s best for us is to just pick a direction and focus on that, rather than juggling between two things.

John: As much as people say that music is a universal language, it’s not. Every market is very different, and everybody have their own music preference. It’s a challenge enough to do one market and succeed really well, and we’re already doing everything on our own, so we don’t want to split our efforts into too many things.

Tell us about the upcoming single, "Letter to my Younger Self" and the inspiration behind it?

John: I’m very lucky as I get the chance to talk to a lot of younger kids, whether it’s fans or just people I met. It’s nice because a lot of kids open up to me and they talk about the struggles that they face.

And this reminds me of stuff that I’ve gone through. A lot of the conversations that I had with people who are younger than me got me thinking about ideas which inspired this song. What started off is more of what I would say to these kids, but it evolved into me remembering my own memories, like if I could travel back in time and talk to my teenage self what would I tell him. Or what are the things that I’d like to encourage him.

And that’s what inspired the song. I like to think that it’s a song that a lot of people would be able to relate to, whether it’s people of the older generation looking back at their younger years, or kids who are growing up now.

6 lesser-known island getaways in Southeast Asia

$

0

Southeast Asia is well known for its island getaways, with Bali, Phuket and Boracay among the most popular island locations in the world to kick back and relax.

But if you’re looking for other wonderful gems in the region, look no further than this list of treasures we’ve unearthed: some of the lesser-known, yet most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia that you should definitely consider visiting.

Nikoi Island

85km and 2.5 hours by ferry away from Singapore, this private island accommodates up to over 50 people at any one time, with no plans to expand on that number.

This limited quota gives an impression of exclusivity – and indeed it can be considered as such – since 50 people on a 15 hectare island is still pretty private.

Relax along the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, and if you’re bored of doing nothing, the island offers a wealth of land and sea activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, diving, and kayaking.

Palawan

While Boracay and Cebu are the more popular island getaways in the Philippines, many locals will tell you that Palawan is where you can find paradise.

These islands, which stretch from Mindoro in the northeast to Borneo in the southwest, is widely acclaimed as the “last ecological frontier” of the Philippines.

Looking for pristine beaches? Head down to El Nido and Coron, where the sand is known to be sugary fine and white. Don’t forget to also visit Puerta Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which comprises of an incredibly beautiful underground river system. The National Park is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as recognised as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

Gili Islands, Lombok

Part of the trinity of Gilis (gili means “small island” in Bahasa Indonesia) off Lombok – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno – the latter two islands are still largely quaint and off-the-beaten-path while the former is the largest in size, and most touristy.

If you like the Bali party vibe, then you’d want to visit Gili Trawangan. This is the place to be if a rowdy full moon party is what you’re looking for.

Gili Air has an established, yet off-the-beaten path vibe, which is perfect for families as well as the casual island visitor. Activities at Gili Air include diving and surfing.

Head down to Gili Meno and you’ll find that life slows to a crawl. It is the most laid back among the three islands, and it also has the nicest beaches.

Togean Islands

The Togean Islands are commonly referred to as the Maldives of Southeast Asia, but comparing this island paradise to its more well known brethren does it a bit of an injustice, since it exudes its own unique character and charm.

Of course, this archipelago of islands and islets located off the coast of Central Sulawesi is a little difficult to get to, but it is well worth the journey once you set your eyes upon its pristine white beaches and turquoise blue waters. Its isolation also means that the Togean Islands are pretty untouched by mainstream tourism, and you’ll get to enjoy your trip there in peaceful solitude.

Togean is also home to a community of Bajau People (Sea Gypsies), who spend most of their lives drifting along the ocean. They are known to have amazing diving abilities – the kids learn to dive up to 10 metres deep from the tender age of seven.

Flores

Flores is an Indonesian island in Nusa Tenggara, and is located next to the more well-known Komodo Island.

The most famous attractions on Flores are the crater lakes at Mount Kelimutu, which reportedly change colours regularly between turquoise, green, red and chocolate brown. This phenomenon is thought to be triggered by chemical reactions in the lakes, caused by the area’s volcanic activity.

Of course, with volcanic activity comes the possibility of hot springs, and visitors will not be disappointed. There’s a hot pool close to the capital of Maumere, and it’s located in the middle of a jungle – perfect for relaxing and being one with nature.

Ko Yao

Comprised mainly of two islands, Ko Yao Yai and Ko Yao Noi, Ko Yao is located between Phuket and Krabi in Phang Nga Bay.

Despite increasing tourism in the area over the years, Ko Yao has retained much of its laid back atmosphere. Both islands have the distinction of being among the last islands in the region to have avoided massive human development, which sets it apart from the more popular islands in the area such as Phuket and Ko Samui.

Chill out by the beautiful beaches or explore the picturesque rice flats and mangrove swamps, Ko Yao offers visitors a great island experience unlike other more commercial locations.

Following their successful show in Johor Bahru on 3 February, Malaysian rock trio Estranged has announced Damansara Utama to be their next show stop.

The concert will be the band’s second “Sepenuhnya Vol. 1” concert and a part of their nationwide tour, which is to support their latest and fourth EP of the same name.

Currently comprising of vocalist Rich Gimbang, lead guitarist Nor "Enha" Hanafi and rhythm guitarist Din Hormatov, Estranged’s upcoming concert will take place at the Bentley Auditorium on 13 May 2017.

Apart from the concert announcement, the band has also unveiled the music video for their fourth single, “Maaf” from their latest album.

The music video features vocalist Rich strolling in the forest, while singing about his regret and wish to be forgiven.

Estranged recently had almost disbanded after getting scammed by a local con artiste.

Last year, the band was invited to perform at a nonexistent Apple Music festival and they later found out that the invite was a scam.

Even after going through the incident, the band got back on their feet and delivered a full-house concert at Kilang Bateri, Johor Bahru, early last month.

Tickets for their second “Sepenuhnya Vol. 1” concert can be booked at tixipro.com/estranged.

Los Angeles’ legendary burger and wine bar, 25 Degrees, is finally opening its second Asian outlet after Bangkok – and the location will be in the Lion City!

A cult favourite among the Hollywood A-list, the award-winning concept, 25 Degrees Burgers and Liquor Bar is named after the precise temperature difference between a raw and well-done hamburger.

There are so far five 25 Degrees outlets around the world, with Singapore as the latest entry and one coming soon in Macau, while other locations include Chicago and Huntington Beach.

Located in Hotel G Singapore, there are only five burgers featured on the menu – three with beef patties, one with seared yellowfin tuna, and one veggie burger – and all of them are simply named by the numbers.

Their signatures include Number One which is a 200g USA angus beef patty, crescenza, gorgonzola, bacon, caramelised onions and Thousand Island dressing (SGD14) burger, and Number Four which is seared yellowfin tuna, lettuce, fried onions and spicy aioli (SGD14).
