“We want to play in Asia!” exclaimed YUZU in a statement by Sistic. “This dream will finally be realized this year, on our 20th anniversary. The name of the tour, NATSUIRO, is our debut song and one that captures what we are about.”

“We are hoping that these shows will be an introduction to all our fans seeing us for the first time. We are taking ourselves back to the beginning, viewing this as a new starting line in hopes that we will be able to deliver a worthy performance to all of you in Asia,” they continued.

The band debuted in 1997 and over the course of their career, thirty-eight out of their forty-three singles have made it to the top five spots on the Oricon charts for sales, J Network reports.

WEbePOP aims to change the local music scene

Malaysia is one of the rare Asian countries that produce English language songs, but with the influx of international artistes ruling the music industry today, it is hard for the local artistes to make it big, even if it is in their own country.

So, how many Malaysian English-singing musicians or bands do you actually know of, and how many of their songs can you name?

Unlike the Malay music scene, the local English scene noticeably falls short as it does not get much support from listeners, simply because the scene has been dominated by the international artistes who are getting more exposure out there.

So this is where WEbePOP comes in!

Via talking to the lead singer of pop-punk band An Honest Mistake, Darren Teh and Malay-singing sensation Elizabeth Tan, who are both part of the WEbePOP project – we learn about how this initiative will completely change the local music scene in Malaysia!

Elizabeth Tan and Darren Teh from An Honest Mistake.

First things first, what exactly is WEbePOP?
webe was previously known as P1 (Yes, that internet service), and has now re-branded to become the first fully-funded crowdbacking digital platform in Malaysia to help Malaysians bring change in the areas that they are passionate about.

Darren Teh and Prashan Chitty aka Melakaboy.

For the WEbePOP project, Darren Teh and Prashan Chitty, AKA Melakaboy, founder of Paranormal Solutions, are collaborating with the webe community to revive the popularity of Malaysian English music by producing an original English pop compilation album to showcase the talents of the local artistes in the country.

About the album.
There will be eight artistes and four producers on board for this project. Who are they?

The artistes– Elizabeth Tan, Narmi, Dasha Logan, Jin Hackman, An Honest Mistake, Daiyan Trisha, Prema Yin and Diandra Arjunaidi.

The producers – AG Coco, Bryan B, Audi Mok and Omar K.

“We got these 8 artistes on board mainly because they are quite popular in their own field and they are all from different genres, but at the same time, they care about changing and contributing to the music scene,” said Darren Teh.

“Each artiste will get two songs, so in total we’ll have a 16-track album.”

When and where to get it?
The whole project is expected to be done by October this year, and once the album has completed, it will be made available online.

WEbePOP project supporters will get to download the album for free, but non-webe members can also get them at a very affordable price either through digital downloads or the purchase of the CD.

A concert tour
To promote the album, Webe is planning on a campus tour, where the eight selected artistes will be playing at local venues, and putting on a huge concert together!

Darren and Prashan are also looking at distributing the album at every possible channel and online platforms including Spotify, iTunes and Deezer.

The whole project is fully backed by the webe community with funding of around RM200 thousand which covers the whole production of the album including the roadshow.

What does the album have in store for fans?
All of the songs in the album will be new and different.

“It’s either songs that we have not recorded yet, or completely new songs!” exclaimed Darren.

According to Darren and Elizabeth, the songs would be something different from their usual genres and style.

Here’s what Darren has to say:-
“For this project, I don’t want to do band-style songs because I can do that anytime I want. I want to make super killer tracks which can be of any genre. It can be a R&B track, it can be an EDM track too if it works. We want to try something new. Because people know An Honest Mistake as a pop punk band, we will always be that. But with this project, we want to show that we can also do something different.”

Here’s what Elizabeth Tan has to say:-
“The music market in Malaysia is very segmented, it’s either you’re in a Malay market or you’re in an English market, and right now most of my fanbase are in the Malay market, so an English market is something that I would like to experiment with.”

It is expected that each artiste would be getting their own music videos as well, apart from a series of videos following the production of WEbePOP.

“We’re planning to document the whole thing – it’s like a journey,” Darren continued.

Objective to achieve
Since Malaysia is one of the few Asian countries that produce English songs, through this project there is a hope to create more job opportunities for musicians in Malaysia, particularly those in the English scene.

“Through this project, we want to tell Malaysia that we can also be as good as anywhere in the world and sometime even better,” said Darren.

“The project aims to educate Malaysians that we also have producers and artistes here that can meet the standards of an international level,” said Elizabeth.

“To create awareness and hopefully start a change.”

“Perception is the hardest to change!”
Why is it so hard for Malaysians to support their very own local artistes?

When Paperplane Pursuit made it to the Billboard Charts, everyone were saying how good they are and that they don’t sound like local artistes. So, how exactly does a local artiste even sounds like?

“I think it’s just mindset. Like if you buy a phone that is Malaysian made compared to an iPhone, but it could’ve been of the same quality, but just because it’s Malaysian made, you assume that it sucks,” explained Elizabeth Tan.

“It is perception, and perception is the hardest to change, but we are trying to change perception,” Darren added.

Future plans
If this project works well, webe might be planning on kicking off other similar projects which focuses on the Chinese or Tamil music scene.

“Hopefully, in the future we can have a full on Malaysian music festival for 3 days, with like 50 stages. We camp out and there’s music for 24-hours,” Darren added.

“These kind of festivals happen all the time in the U.S. but it’s something that has never been done here.”

“It’s basically putting Good Vibes, Urbanscapes, Rock the World and all the EDM festivals together at a single place – that is the grand plan,” he continued.

So, what do YOU need to do?
In order to make the WEbePOP a reality, all you need to do is download the webe community app, share the project on any social media platform and earn more webits (it's free!), and then use the webits that you've earned to support and pledge for the project!

So pledge NOW because the project has 24 more days to go, and it needs a total of 250k webits to unlock, and it is now at 107k!

Over the years, several privacy and security-focused web browsers have been developed to protect your privacy online, but now, for the first time ever, a new Sharia-compliant web browser has been created to prevent users from surfing haram (illicit) content.

Salam Browser, is a Chromium-based browser which adheres to Islamic adab (manners), enabling safe and clean web browsing that can help maintain the “purity of your heart and benefits your values.”

Developed by SBRO Online Safety Solutions, a Malaysian security software company focused on ASEAN countries, Salam Browser will alert users of webpages that contain pornography, gambling, materials which are offensive to the religion, and also other harmful content.

It also eliminates any adult and violent content in its image and video search results.

Furthermore, users can help protect the Salam community by reporting undetected harmful webpages to the browser’s blacklist so that other Salam users will be protected as well.

For enhanced privacy online, Salam Browser hides your geolocation with built-in free VPN service and blocks the tracking of your online activity to secure your personal data from abuse.

Currently, Salam Browser is only available on Windows and is currently in its Beta stage.

For those who are interested, you can visit salambrowser.com to download it.

This is not the first time that Malaysia has developed Sharia-compliant products and services. For example, there is (or was) Rayani Air, Islamic banks and Shariah-compliant hotels.

5 upcoming revived TV shows you should watch!

$

With a lot of our favourite shows which we once deemed long ended making their unexpected return like "X-Files" and "Full House", it seems that show creators are willing and now know the potential and benefits of reviving them in a new fresh setting, or maybe Hollywood is just running out of fresh ideas?

Whatever it is, we're just thankful that we don't ever need to truly bid farewell to the shows that we once loved, as the chances for them to get suddenly revived or even rebooted have just gotten higher, especially since most of these show creators don't have to work with TV networks anymore what with streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime on the hunt to buy these shows based on what the fans (and not TV networks are demanding!

So guys, we have been heard! These favourite TV shows of ours are getting a revival!

Gilmore Girls

The famous fast-talking and witty pop culture referencing mother daughter duo might've left its fans with a not so satisfactory ending when it ended its final seventh season back in 2007, but this year Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) will be back in the limited Netflix series called "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life". There will be four 90-minute episodes and the entire cast, including original star turned Hollywood bigshot Melissa McCarthy will be returning for the reunion as Sookie the chef! Will we get to see what life is like for Lorelai after marrying diner-owner Luke and what about Rory's tumultuous love life since most of her exes from the past seasons like Dean (Jared Padalecki), Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) and Matt (Logan Huntzberger) are slated to be back too? Sadly, the only thing that would be mixing from this perfect revival is actor Edward Herrmann who played Lorelai's father and Rory's grandfather Richard Gilmore as he had passed away in 2014.

Prison Break

Seven years ago, we were fooled into thinking that Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) had died from electrocution after saving the love of his life and their child. Apparently not, as now he is back trapped in yet another prison to... drumroll... break out from! Sure, after the first season things got pretty stale real fast considering that Scofield had actually managed to break out from the prison he was in with his brother Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) thus making the "Prison Break" title redundant. And then throughout the 4 seasons there were other prisons as well and a secret government organisation. Now for season 5, FOX thinks that the brothers should be trapped in yet another prison (shocker!), but this time in Morocco, and instead of Scofield rescuing Lincoln, it will be Lincoln rescuing Scofield. The trailer shows a lot of familiar faces returning, we just hope that none of the familiar plot would be repeated as well in 2017 when it's out.

MacGyver

We think its pretty smart to reboot the secret agent series from the 1980s as its something the younger generation would not have come to know otherwise. From the trailer, what audiences would get is an origin story starring Lucas Till ("X-Men" prequels) taking the reign from original star Richard Dean Anderson, minus the mullet, to play the genius inventor that can make do with anything to get out of everything. With the advancement of today's technology as compared to the 80s, we probably wouldn't see MacGyver making stuff out of rubber-bands and oversized IBM computers, cause with smartphones, drones and more in existence in this era, the playing field just got a whole lot bigger for this action packed hero.

Star Trek

Don't mistake this series as part of the J.J. Abrams's "Star Trek" movies as these TV series would feature a new fresh storyline. The possibility of the series connecting to the many other "Star Trek" TV series out there is also rather slim, as this would have a new crew, new villains, new ships, new worlds and new civilisations which would all be coming to your small screens. Since the series hasn't even gone into production yet, there's little info available except for this teaser that confirms we're getting it in 2017, til then, live long and prosper!

Twin Peaks

As the most important catalyst that started the mind-bending cult TV show trend that followed, "Lost","The X-Files","True Detective","Wayward Pines" and "Las Revenants", "Twin Peaks" will be returning with not only most of the original cast like Kyle MacLachlan and David Duchovny, but with a massive 216 other cast members as announced by creator David Lynch. Picking up 25-years later after the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer that first set things into supernatural motion, FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle) is back into the disturbing town of Twin Peaks as we find out his fate (based on what happened in the last series). Among the popular names added to the cast this time are; Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Laura Dern, Ernie Hudson, Michael Cera, Eddie Vedder, Trent Reznor, Jessica Szohr, Jane Levy, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Knepper, Jim Belushi and more. So, would you Fire Walk with Twin Peaks in 2017?

National athlete Joel Van Huizen wants to be “X-Men’s” Professor X

$
0
0

Joel Van Huizen is not an unfamiliar name to those who are well-versed in the world of hockey. The young athlete is a third-generation national hockey player, following in the footsteps of his father (national hockey coach Steven Van Huizen), grandfather (former national hockey coach Lawrence Van Huizen) and even grand-uncle (the late Peter Van Huizen) who represented Malaysia in the Olympics.

Joel started playing during childhood but only actively joined the world of sports during his teen years, when the then-16-year-old moved to St. John’s Institution. It was then that he started representing the state. He started his national journey when he was 20, joining the national junior programme known as the Project 2013 team.

The team has since played in the 2013 Junior World Cup in New Delhi, where they came up fourth, the best achievement Malaysia has had in the Junior World Cup (was only achieved twice before, making this the third win).

Joel made his debut for the national side this year in New Zealand, where six test matches were held, four against New Zealand, two against Korea.

TheHive.Asia took a little time to chat with the national athlete during the premiere of “X-Men: Apocalypse” and found out more about his future plans as well as his favourite X-Men.

Passion for hockey runs in the Van Huizen family (Photo source: Joel’s Facebook).

How’s it like being a third-generation national hockey player? There must be pressure to do as good as your father and grandfather?

Joel: There are always role models you can look up to but it also adds on pressure when you’re playing. My dad is the national team coach, so it adds even more pressure since I’m his son and I’m playing on the national team. But it’s something to be proud of, the pressure is there but it’s something that I cherish. I’m proud to be able to follow my father and grandfather’s footsteps.

So you recently graduated from college?

I just graduated from HELP, majored in Business and Accounting. I’ve started applying for jobs at a few companies. I’m looking for a company that will allow me to play for the national team and work.

Is it hard to balance studies and sports when you’re an athlete?

I think in Malaysia it’s very easy to study and play. Public universities allow students to play and study, but the only catch is it takes longer to graduate. A regular student would take about four years to graduate, they might take about seven to eight years because they would have to keep extending. I think every athlete will need an education because you might get a major injury from sports and you can never play again. So without education you don’t really have a backup plan. I think education is really important.

Joel has recently graduated from college (Photo source: Joel’s Facebook).

What’s your advice to the young students who would like to become athletes?

Being an athlete is a very good thing, it teaches you so much about things you can’t learn from books, like discipline, dedication and teamwork. You don’t only get healthier at the same time, but it also helps you in your studies. Because it teaches you how to discipline yourself, how to study when exams are coming close. If you want to be an athlete, go for it.

When are your next tournaments?

We have a state tournament this weekend, which will be seven to ten days long. After that, we have a tour to Japan. After Japan, Australian tour where we’re playing their league in September. And we have Asian Champions Trophy coming up later this year.

You mention that you like superhero movies and you are looking forward to “X-Men: Apocalypse”, let’s say if you could be any of the X-Men, which of them would you be and why?

I think Professor Xavier. I mean his ability to read people’s mind and project images in people’s mind, I think it’s pretty cool. If you’re Professor Xavier, you can read what the opponent’s going to do. It makes it a whole lot easier, you know when he’s going to pass, when he’s going to dribble, how he’s going to dribble (laughs).

“Incorporating the latest design and technology features, the highly efficient 737 MAX 200 will provide VietJet's growing network with market-leading economics, a superior passenger experience and contribute significantly to their future success,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner said as quoted by USA Today.

Thanks to its brave PR stunt, until today, the airline is best known for having beauty pageant contestants performing Hawaiian-themed dance on-board on one of its flights.

Even though it was fined for that incident, the flight is known for holding celebratory in-flight fashion shows from time to time.

VietJet Air will begin its Southeast Asian routes starting from 1 June onwards.

The flight ticket from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City costs only MYR371, but if you had booked the tickets earlier on, you might’ve be able to fly for FREE!
